Mildly Disappointing Game

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 1 / 9

I really enjoyed BG2 but this expansion just did not have everything it should have. Mostly it lacked in story and dialouge, being just a hack and slash type of game, that did not take very long to beat.

Experience cap is ridiculous, my best character was not even close to a cap when the expansions ended, also the last villain was not even half as challenging as Irenicus was.

On a brighter note, I think Pool of Radiance and Neverwinter Nights will be incredible games of a higher quality than Baldurs Gate was.

BG 2 can do no wrong

I know the expansion hasn't been released yet, I wish the release date would be left off the top of the order form because I've gotten my hopes dashed about 5 or 6 times as the date was moved. Which is a pain in the rear. I'm about ready to cancel my order. Anyways......about the game. Baldur's Gate 2 was the BEST RPG I've ever played. I expect that the expansion will be even better, just as the BG1 expansion was better than Baldur's Gate 1 (Durlag's Tower was anyways). This is a must buy for any RPG'er. Don't listen to the people who are complaining about it.

Now obviously I haven't played the game yet, but I loved bg2 and bg1 and the other Black Isle games. So why write this, you ask? Cause it's gonna be more of what bg2 was and then some, that's why. How hard can it be to write on an expansion pack before you've played it? It's not like they remade the whole game. But anyway, with the additions they've made to the game, it will definately be worth the money and time played. FINALLY being able to memorize 9th lvl spells, took frikken long enough. Why only 4 stars? No game is perfect folks, sorry. I don't care what you think or say. BG2 is one of the better RPG's out there though. Now for Neverwinter Nights And BG:Dark Alliance. Anyway, if you liked bg2 enough to play it all the way through and then some, you'll most definately enjoy the expansion. So buy it already, and justify the loss of money in your account later in life, when it still won't matter anyway.

My last review was for SoA

ToB hasn't come out yet. People on this are rating Shadows of Amn. Shadows of Amn has the lousy frame rates, hopefully ToB will have a few fixes pumped into the CD, if not then in future patches designed for ToB. SoA is a good game except for poor performance and engine trouble(graphic wise).

REVIEW UPDATE 7/13/01 still **** four stars.

Now that the game is released and recieved by me, I can give an accurate review(or as close as possible review) Why only four stars? The reason, not engine trouble as I said earlier, the engine is slow, even set at general 200mhz, graphic 200mhz and sound 200mhz but the game is limited in choices. I will have to try the full install, however.

Much like Serpent Isle was to Ultima VII the Black Gate, ToB is on a greater scale of immortals and the Universe instead of just humblely going from village to village getting supplies, wandering the landscape like witless cattle, ect like BG 1; but it is also one big cut scene of do this and this cut scene will happen and so on. No choice. Much like Serpent Isle(for those that are familiar with Richard Garriot's series) Just a lot of dimming of the screen to the next scene like a play or something. One thing that is awsome, as said by others,is Serevok, he is mighty strong and mighty fast and decently smart to boot(not a retard like my paladin "leader" with 09 int). My lawful good Cavalier-paladin(of equall strenght to Severok w/o belt) tolorates the darned creepo only so long as he does as he is told! No killing Imoen or wrecking havok on villagers and such.(AMD recommended for any party.) Speaking of AMD, my computer cannot run this game well because AMD is part intollerable. It is too picky on parts but that is a tech issue, I guess. Now back to the important stuff. ToB is a pail imitation of SoA but it is not a bad game. SoA is hard to compair with anything. ToB is, after all, an expansion, nothing more(in my opinion) And SoA is the game. ToB is worth the money, however, and I am glad I got it.

BG2 is very good game, and I am sure that ToB will be too. BG2 runs very well on my machine. I have a 1gz P3 with 512 ram and a Geforce 2 Ultra 64 DDR. I am running it on Windows 2000 Pro. I know my machine is pretty high up there, but it ran well when I just have a 700mhz celeron with 128 ram.

First of all this can be a choopy game its not really that u need the worlds greatest computer it just goes good with some computers and others not so well i played this on my sisters computer and it was a choopy as choopy gets but on my it works great and mine is older. this is mostly tech stuff thought the game it self is great for the rpg lovers its keeps u hooked till the end theres a new npc that can join and your going to be really surprized when u find out who it is (maybe an old friend or maybe not a friend) the game last about 50 hours depending on who u r and how u play.

Some Bugs But No Insurmountable Problems

I too encountered the laggy, slow-frame rate problems in Shadows of Amn. My computer system consists of a 500mhz P3, 384 megs of SDRAM-100, a 5400RPM hard drive, and a 32MB TNT2Ultra video card. The frame rate was drastically improved by downloading the latest video drivers from NVdia. I also reduced the number of path finding nodes available for the AI from 32K to 8K. The AI doesn't need that much path finding ability. The frame rate for the multiplayer mode remained atrocious though. It was about ten times worse than single player mode. I found that toning down the graphics settings did little to improve frame rate. In order to play SoA with a decent frame rate, you need to do or have the following: 1. Have the latest drivers for your video card. 2. Always do a full install. It will save your computer a lot of time not having to turn to your CD-ROM drive so much. 3. If you can afford it, have a decent video card (with a minimum of 16megs of video ram) and a decent hard drive (with at least 7200 RPM). The higher the RPM, the faster data from your hard drive can be pulled. If you're wondering why I have a 5400RPM hard drive, it's because I bought it before I knew that hard drives had different speeds.

I hope Interplay paid attention to gamer's complaints and remedied this problem in ToB. If not, they'd better get a patch out in a hurry!

Besides the tech problems, this game's the bomb! The new two weapons fighting ability allows your party to wade through enemy ranks like never before. Powerful new spells like lower resistance (which levels the playing field when fighting magic resistant enemies), imprison (which is very useful for dispatching innocent civilians who've you accidently turned hostile without taking a reputation hit), and a whole plethora of anti-magic shield spells which render powerful mages and priests vulnerable to attack.

Great, but some annoying bugs

This expansion is as much fun to play as BG2, except for the fairly annoying bugs associated with intense combat. This caused performance to degrade to the point of near-unplayability in a few circumstances, despite the fact that my system easily exceeds the recommended specifications. This continued even when I greatly reduced graphics detail and the like.

Apart from this (not trivial) problem, the game is simply addictive. I would recommend it, notwithstanding its bugs, on the hope that Interaction will come up with a patch to mitigate the performance problems.

ONE OF THE BEST GAMES I EVERY PLAYED...........

I have played alot of games (its my life) and this is one of the best games i have played. I think its sad to see it go, but baldurs gate is like a book, it cant go on forever. The graphics were great, the story line was great (lacking once or twice) the sound was also great. Over all it was a great game. A little too easy, but then again I had a sword that stole life and regenerated every 10 secs. and could level drain healing my char. 20 points. I am finding the final boss imposible to beat because all my spells are used up. If you have any hints email me at [...]Hope they make a new game.

A milestone in the RPG genre

This is the ending of the Baldur's gate saga that fans deserved. Your characters can reach obscenely high levels, which brings forth many new possibilities on the strategic level. The plot is great and entertaining till the last moment. The only drawback is a very short ending movie.
