Phenominal

The game is absolutely phenominal. Graphics are good, very clean and crisp. The sheer epicness of it is absolutely amazing. Large scale battles, beautiful distances, amazingly smart AI, and excellent 4-player co-op.

A fun easy time

I returned to gaming after many years away when the nextgen systems came out. (My last system before my X360 was a Sega Genesis). The new games are amazing to look at and gameplay has moved to a whole new level. Games like Gears of War and Rainbow Six Vegas are fun, surprisingly realistic, and very challenging. Some of the time though I just want to shoot stuff, mash buttons, and not really have to think about it (especially after dying six or seven times trying to pass a checkpoint). Halo 3 is that kind of game. It's easy. It's something you could play with your younger brother, a kid, or someone who wasn't a "gamer." And for me that's great. If you're looking to be blown away by NextGen graphics and gameplay, pick up Gears of War or one of the Tom Clancy titles. If you're looking for something easier and recognizable, Halo 3's a good pick.

Cheers to Bungie for not selling out the softcore gamers in designing this title. It's a good time.

In general, I'd like to see more options for local play. It seems like local play is being phased out in favor of the pay-to-play online system. Am I the only one who feels weird interacting with total strangers? I'm never at their skill level and they're often rude.

Wow this makes me feel old. Anyway, hope you enjoy.

Fun Game but Single Player Mode was a Little Disapointing.

Fans of the Halo series will buy it and enjoy it. My main gripe was in the single player mode. It is so short! The game was completed in about 10 hours, which in my opinion, is very poor. Other than that the game is a winner. BTW I bought this for my 14 year old and he will play with friends and online for many more hours. The M rating didn't bother me as I had seen the other Halo games. It's a war game so death is an integral part. Killing evil space aliens instead of humans is much easier to deal with.
So go and get yourself Halo 3. It is definately fun to play.

A Blast from the Past..

I must admit, I'm a bit surprised with the number of mediocre reviews that haven't only been showing up on Amazon, but all over the InterTubes as well. I'll start by saying that I am a huge Halo fan and enjoyed every game, including Halo 2. Unlike many other people, you'll find that I enjoyed Halo 1's multiplayer more than Halo 2. It's hard to explain but you came to read about Halo 3 and that's what you'll get.

The game is in many respects an ode to Halo 1. Johnson is cheery and peppy like he was in the first game and is a real blast to be around. The marines are typical like they were in all the other games, but I noticed some outstanding combat dialogue (funny). The missions too are very much like Halo 1. I won't give any away but some of the more memorable experiences in Halo one are done up, in typical Bungie style, in Halo 3 with some interesting twists.

I want to get the Sound and Video overwith first because that's what everyone always seems to care about. The video is fantastic in my opinion and I still say this when everyone compares it to Gears. Yes Gears has good graphics but you are mostly running around in small corridors, fighting a dozen enemies or so at a time while in Halo 3, it isn't uncommon to fight nearly 30 at the same time in addition to your allied companions, all running over 30fps. My favorite part of the grahpics upgrade to Halo 3 is in the more subtle details. There is fantastic HDR system where if you are in a tunnel, persay, and walk out, you'll screen will turn white for a few seconds. The same when a grenade or explosion happens right next to you. It's much cooler than I can ever describe. I also like if you turn around real quick or in a heavy action sequence, there is some depth of field and blurring. Ads a nice touch.

The sound is incredible. If you liked the sound in either of the Halos, you will enjoy this. I don't think anyone could or can have a problem with the sound. This isn't just the music (a lot of it is older music improved) but the environment sounds and weapon sounds. Each explosion sounds perfect and just listening while standing still gives you a feeling like you're in that location; very believable.

Back to my original point of the ode to Halo; Bungie clearly did their homework and while they added all these spectacular additions to the game (I haven't mentioned new vehicles, weapons, equipment, etc because that would take too long), they kept the feeling of "30 seconds of fun, over and over again". There is not a moment of inactivity in the game and each battle leads to another one while feeling fresh at the same time.

I had two reactions to the game when I first played it. "Wow, this feels like a movie" and "How am I going to do this?" The beginning cinematic and all the cinematics that follow feel very much like an epic movie. The dialogue is responsive and on top and the subtle detail to the characters is impressive. For example, Chief is reminiscing about Cortana and then Johnson sticks his head in the screen with a Dory (from Finding Nemo) like face, reminding you of the lightheartedness of Johnson despite all the adventures you have shared. There are countless examples but hopefully you'll see them by yourself.

The second reaction involves strategy. The levels are clearly linear but playing on the tougher difficulties (if you are any good at FPS, play at Heroic), you have to constantly evaluate your surroundings, picking out weaknesses in their lines and deciding whether to try and get down the group's leader (though they may block your attempt by popping down a bubble shield) or picking off grunts to clear a path. It's really fantastic.

I strongly recommend that you play this game. Some people may not like it as much as Halo 1 or may not think it's the best thing since velcro shoes, it is still a great game with tremendous replayability. I mean, I didn't even talk about Saved Films, Forge, Custom Games, Multiplayer, Co-Op, Meta Scores, Skulls or the community. Please, do yourself a favor and try it out.

Great single-player campaign, but much too short!

The main reason I bought Halo 3 was for the single-player campaign, which I enjoyed in Halo 1 & 2. I loved the single-player content in Halo 3; unfortunately, there was just not enough of it. The missions were interesting, the scope was impressive, the story was nicely handled, and the battles were intense. Had this content lasted longer, I would have definitely rated this game 5 stars. But I beat the campaign in only 3 days! That's less time than it took me to play through BioShock, which I thought was short.

I know many people rave about the multiplayer aspects. I tried them, and just don't find them to be that interesting. The system forces you to play odd maps (like sniper rifles only, swords only, etc.) far too often. The "matchmaking" abilities seemed not to work very well. There are not that many maps available. And melee is way overpowered (if you come up behind someone with a shotgun, Halo 3 says that hitting them with the butt of the rifle will do more damage than actually shooting them with it).

The other extras (video room, web-site records, sharing files, etc.) are nice concepts, but not something I place a lot of value in.

Unless you really enjoy multiplayer, I recommend renting this game for a week. That should give you enough time to play through the short single-player campaign and get your fill of the Halo 3 multiplayer.

Yeah, so ?

I'll keep it short:

All the fuzz aside, I still prefer the original Halo. H3 is not a bad game by any stretch, but the wow factor just wasn't there. Too much hype and over-commercializing (Halo Cereal?) has hurt the myth of Master Chief. Halo 3 is a classic example of what happens when all it's really about anymore is the profit. You can have fun with this, but it's not world-shattering.

Halo 3 is a remarkable game. The story's lost a lot of its originality (go to alien world number 3, blow up Halo number 3), but the campaign regains that sense of... "epicness" that you took from Halo 1. Every level has something unique and fun about it, which means its always fun to go back on Legendary with a friend.

The battles are just massive. Instead of Halo 2's concept of "2 Brutes, an elite, and 3 grunts are plenty!" Halo 3 walks you unsuspectingly into a room filled with 8 brutes, 10 grunts, and 20 bugs. This was intimidating at first, but the health of enemies has been drastically decreased since Halo 2 meaning that you can empty an assault rifle clip into any enemy and you're pretty much guaranteed to kill it.

This brings me to my next point: weapons. Unlike the previous games where you had your pick of the "useless weapons," you know the ones you pick up because you ran out of rockets and can't really kill elites with a pistol so you have to kind of settle on the "better than nothing" needler; Halo 3's arsenal is useful against any and every enemy. The assault rifle from Halo 1, for example, isn't just a means of stunning your enemy until you can get close enough to bash them anymore. It actually takes down 3-4 grunts per clip if you use it correctly. On top of this, there is a new grenade type (stick grenades) that, when thrown, travel in a fairly straight line attaching themselves to whatever they hit. This is useful when attacking vehicles as the arc that the plasma grenades travel in can be hard to calculate. On top of that, there are now "powerups" you can pick up for use in combat. You can carry only one at a time and deploy them at any time using the X button. These powerups include portable plasma shields, trip mines, regenerators (heal your shields quickly), flares which blind your enemies, and several more.

Vehicles! It's just not halo if you can't blow people up with a tank and laugh at them helplessly fly through the air (like genocidal fireworks!). Bungie brings back all of the old classic vehicles (the ghost, the warthog, etc.) and adds several new ones. There's a modified version of the warthog that now carries 5 marines, there are new deadly Covenant "motorcycles" called choppers which can take out an enemy vehicle in one hit if hit head-on, and there's a new ATV version of the warthog as well designed to carry a driver and a passenger (at one point they deploy 5 of these with passangers wielding rocket launchers to take down a scarab tank--FUN!).

Overall a great product and fun game. I understand why people would be disappointed, but I never expected it to live up to its hype. It's still a great game and worthy of at least a rental.

Same as Halo 2, Not that good

I rented this game just out of curiosity. I enjoyed Halo and I was very disapointed with Halo 2. I was hoping that Halo 3 would be an improvement. Well, the graphics have been improved but that's about it. It's exactly the same as Halo 2 with a few new weapons and vehicles. Now I don't play multiplayer games, I never have. But it's pretty clear that's what this game was made for. Playing the campaign, it doesn't seem that they spent a lot of time on it, like Halo 2.
The story is not very interesting, continuing from Halo 2, which wasn't very interesting to begin with. The gameplay is very linear. All you do is go into an area and kill everything, collect some weapons and ammo, go to the next area and kill everything and so on until you get to a cinematic to let you know that the level has ended. The levels are rarely big enough to do any kind of exploring unlike Halo which involved a lot of exploring. The sound is not very good, nor are the sound effects, I can barely hear my guns firing while the enemy guns are really loud. I also have a standard 32 inch TV and the image is still sharp but the picture looks scrunched up like it was only meant for widescreen TV's. The gun sight is also very low on the screen and to shoot straight you have to look up, which is very irritating. There are some cool new vehicles, but overall Halo 3 is like almost every other FPS out there. I would say if you get this just for the campaign mode, rent it or wait till this is in the bargain bin.

Ho Hum Game in an Average Franchise

Hype is about all that this game has going for it. I consider this game on par with the Zune player. It works and does what you think it does but is it worth the money or fantastic? No. Not at all.

I would pass on this and consider that the whole proposition is a scam. You overpay for a game with crappy graphics (I mean, have you seen the character models) and then you have to pay $5 dollars to play with these rude clowns who will personally attack you if you don't swear by it.

It just makes the whole thing that much more useless. Everyone knows that the Xbox360 will be abandoned like Xbox in a year or so and personally, I'm mad too that I drank the Kool-Aid but then again, I also bought a first generation iPod and a new one this year. So goes the expendable income story.

Don't believe hype. You can buy people's attention spans in the same way that MS bought market share in the gaming industry. Seriously, there's nothing to see here. Move along.
