Does it live up to the hype?

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 3

Halo 3...first the hype. How can ANY game live up to the hype that surrounds a game like Halo 3? They can't. Probably no other game on the planet has more to live up to.

I have only just begun to play the single-player game, as I've been spending more time on Xbox Live, and really, there is nothing to complain about there. Sure, people will mention the graphics could have been better...but it's Halo, that's the art style. You either like it or you don't. But the online game has so many options, is so customizable, that it's true, people will be playing this game online for the next 3 or so years...without a doubt. Take that into consideration when you hear people complain that they finished the game in 6 hours, and that it's not worth the money or they got ripped off. How will YOU play? I think for $60 or $70 beans, you get A LOT of game here...a lot of value, IF you play online.

Also, what skill-level are these people who finish the game in 6 hours? I have only played a little on Heroic, and it's pretty hard. I'm not incredible at FPS games, but I do love them. I see myself finishing this game in 10 or so hours, which for me, at my age, is plenty long enough, especially considering how much I will get out of the online multiplayer.

Bottom line: if you love Halo 1 or 2, you will love this game. If you only play single-player FPS games, you may not get your money's worth, because you are not experiencing everything this game has to offer.
If you love multiplayer co-op or competetive games, there is no question this game is the best value out there, period.

Saved Films: This is such an amazing feature, that it's a shame EVERY next-gen game does not include this. People say that in the coming generations of games, when graphics do not improve by much more, game designers need to innovate in new ways...THIS is what I want in next-gen games. The ability to save, and share accomplishments in a game, single or multiplayer.
Hell, I recently bought Madden '08, and I can't even save a replay of a kickoff return TD! That should be a STANDARD in this generation.
Guess what? Halo 3 gives it to you.
Buy this game.

Just OK

I didn't play the original Halos, so I don't feel like I'm going to come at this game with a predetermined bias. Comparing the game to others I have played on the 360 (Gears, Prey, Call of Duty 2/3, Bioshock) I would compare the overall experience most closely with Call of Duty 3) and based on the pre-release hype, this is a dissapointment. The game has nice graphics, but this game plays pretty much like a typical run and gun. No innovations that I noticed beyond what COD3 brings to the table. On-line play may be better, but for those who play predominantly single player campaigns, I would defintitely recommend Gears, Bioshock and even Prey as a substantially better overall experience. If you are a single campaigner, I would defintely rent first, because to me, this game is not a must buy.

6 hours of single person play?!?!

I received the game on Wednesday and played a few hours, finished it on Thursday after a couple of hours of play.
Single person play is way to short-maybe about 6 hours.
I almost feel like I got ripped off.

Oh well.....

The single player campaign is a disappointment. Single player is terribly short and uninspired. No city boards; what's up with that!?! Are the enemies square dancing or is that really the AI? Is Cortana on Crack!?! Where is this fight happening again, because I couldn't tell; 'Earth', the 'moon', 'Neptune'? The campaign felt like an after thought so attentions could be focused on the 'money making' online multi-player experience.

This game definitely deserves kudos for the graphical shoe polish, and online multi-player experience. Still, lone wolf fans of the Halo trilogy single player campaign may want to lower their expectations. Consider trying before buying.

Love it or hate it, Halo 3 is a huge gaming event. The series has had huge commercial success. To the point where it had bred fanboys and haters alike. It's almost to the point where you can't just say the game is good. You either love it or hate it. I don't love Halo, but I don't hate it either. For what it's worth it's a pretty good game. Obviously if you didn't think much of the first two games, however, it's unrealistic to expect you'll think highly of the third one. Simply put, if you don't like Halo, don't expect the third game in the series to turn you into a fan.

The story is told through cutscenes that are well acted with their voice talents. If you've been interested in the story since the beginning, chances are you'll like it and be satisfied. The game doesn't drown you out in story sequences either. For those who just want to get to the gameplay, you've got it. But there is a fair amount of story here as well.

In terms of gameplay, however, Halo 3 doesn't really do much to distinguish itself from Halo 2. Most (if not all) the mechanics to the gameplay are pretty much the same. There are some new weapons thrown in there, but for the most part, a lot of your arsenal comes from the first two games. There's very little that separates the third installment from the first two. This can either be a good or a bad thing. Good because you'll instantly be able to familiarize yourself with the game. It's like seeing an old friend again. Yet because of this, the game is no challenge at all for the veteran Halo gamer. Likewise, those expecting Halo 3 to go above and beyond will find it doesn't. Whether or not the game being too much like Halo 2 is a problem or not is up to the individual gamer.

In addition to that, the campaign is quite short. Most likely you'll be able to finish it in one or two days without fail. To compensate, however, the game does have different difficulty levels and there are plenty of achievements to get. There are also skulls hidden in some of the missions which can alter gameplay and make the game a bit more difficult. So it may be short, but there is replay for anyone who wants to master the game. There's also co-op with up to four players. You can actually do co-op with some friends online.

Halo has always been well known for its multi-player. Particularly online. Again, like Halo 2, it doesn't do a whole lot of things differently. There are a couple of new modes, but much like the gameplay, there's just not enough new here. However, there is a Forge system that allows you to customize maps by placing things like weapons and such in different places. You can even share these creations with your friends online. Multiplayer isn't everything its cracked up to be, though. While it can be fun, it only really takes off if you decide to get on XBOX Live or System Link with a bunch of friends. Offline it's only you vs. your friends and even when it's four of you it's rather unexciting in some of these maps. You can't set up AI competitors either. So unless you go online Multiplayer can feel quite empty.

The game looks good. By far one of the prettier games on the console. There certainly are better looking games on the 360, but this one is still a nice piece of eye candy. It runs smoothly as well at a steady framerate. There are a couple of moments of clipping but it's not enough to hinder gameplay and some will not notice these things. The game's soundtrack is also a good one. Many tunes are repeated from the previous games, but what's new is also good.

Halo 3 is a good game overall. If you were impressed with the first two games, you'll probably be impressed here. It doesn't do enough to distinguish itself from the previous games but it's still a good game overall. As I noted before, if you didn't like Halo before, do not expect the third game to make a fan out of you.

Pros:

+Familiar gameplay
+A lot of online multiplayer modes
+Good graphics and music
+Emphasis on gameplay and story
+You can customize maps
+There's some replay value here

Cons:

-The campaign mode is quite short
-In terms of gameplay and multiplayer the game does not do a lot to distinguish itself from the previous games and there isn't enough new stuff thrown in either

Great game, no matter what people say

well, i was not totally obsessed with this game like some people. Though i did enjoy the past games, this one is just as good, dont let someone tell u different, unoriginal, maybe, but thats kinda what happens when u have 2 games that have come before it.... hmmm...

Well, as for the reveiw:

Graphics: 9/10 sure, they might not be the prettiest, but when u actually plug it into a good tv with 1080p, oh yes, the eye candy pops out.

Gameplay: 9/10 If its not broken dont fix it, simple as that. Feels more like a real war to try and save humanity. The added multiplayer features add more depth to a great game

Sound: 8/10 Great score, as too be expected, cool effects, and the battle chatter is good.

re-playability 8/10 unfortunately the game doesnt take too long to complete, but, the multiplayer features will keep u playing this for a long long time.

Now, if i could, i would give this game a 4.5 out of 5, just cause it isnt perfect. I would say that is improved over the second halo, but not the first, the first was just an amazing game, but it does come close. If u want a good game for your 360? get this, both for urself and the untold amount of hours with your friends with multiplayer.

This game is just flat out not fun.

My title says it all. I've loved my Xbox 360 since I got it two Christmas's ago. I waited in line with my girlfriend at midnight for this mediocre shooter. We got home and she watched me play and asked what the big deal was. She was asleep after the 4th match of Team Slayer because she realized I just cycled through every map already. I went to sleep after the 6th match and went back to playing Gears the next day. If the name Halo wasn't tagged on this, that's all it would be, a mediocre shooter. The campaign is a chore to play through, even 4 player co-op, you can't search for games, you have to put together your own party which can be rather hard sometimes. Gears of War did EVERYTHING better, and raised the bar in gaming, and it didn't even have it's own Moutain Dew flavor. lol I've never written a review for Amazon before but I feel this game really intrigued me enough to do it. I also hope people stop writing 5 star reviews soon, because this game is so undeserving of everything it's recieved in the last 6 months. Have a good one.

If you are a victim of too much hype ... just like me who mistakenly bought this game cause Microsoft spend millions on too mush fake hype then sell it before it's worth pennies.

First to let you know about myself so you don't think I am biased .... I am XBOX and Microsoft fan. I've been playing games for last 22 years so you can imagine I have gone through many generations of video gaming. I myself is IT Systems Architect.

I played this game for hours yesterday before coming to conclusion. Honestly I bought this game because of too much Hype ... but all my expectations were broken yesterday.

The Halo3 gameplay is average nothing special. No special fighting moves or movements just simple FPS. The Graphics are below average when you compare them with the graphics of Gears of War, BioShock, MassEffect, or Timeshift. There was a hype about no frame drop ... that is completely false ... there are frame drops and any body can notice it.

It is completely unbelievable that all the editorial critics said that they have never played such a fantastic game. Either Microsoft filled their mouth with a lot of money or they are also nothing more than hyped critics.

Lets see how much of $10 million fake hype can take this game to.

Disappointed

I was introduced into XBOX world by playing Halo 2 and liked it. Shortly after I got Call of Duty 3 and LOVED it. Graphics were unreal: smoke, explosions, fire, etc. More importantly you really have to think to survive and win. You have different kit layouts, you can go prone, etc.
Anyway, I guess I was really expecting a lot of HALO 3 in terms of both graphics and a little more than "run around jumping trying to shoot people". To me HALO3 looks, feels and plays almost identical to HALO2 but i guess I could have seen that coming. Still not sure where all the hype is coming from.
