I have played and own the original two Tenchu games, and this is been by far the most challenging of the three. The addition of the new skills gained by the original two characters and the addition of Tesshu is great. The controls are still a bit on the sticky side of things, but overall, still the same as the original. The weapons and control actually resembles the second Tenchu rather than the first. The level design has also been drastically improved, featuring different environments and designed to actually look somewhat realistic. Additionally, from a level design standpoint, the use of boss fights as an initial startoff (and ending in others -- and sometimes both) is actually inventive. However, the movements of the characters are still a wee bit awkward, making them look like they're constipated (e.g., the characters in The Getaway). Even the bosses are better -- making good use of the bosses from the second Tenchu and adding some more. For example, Onikage and Tatsmaru return as bosses. Even the head honcho resembles the head boss in the first Tenchu, which is entertainment in of itself. The stealth animations are particularly cool, especially Tesshu's. The storyline is still similar to the originals, like a bad martial arts B-movie...

The criticisms lie in two things. First, the AI of the enemy is still catatonic. If you expect Splinter Cell, this isn't it. Second, sometimes, the fighting system works against you and not for you. The collision factor is sometimes a bit weak.

The ending of this game mentions that the story will continue, but hopefully, in the next and future additions, they make some more improvements game-wise. The use of shadows and even sound, as Splinter Cell does, would greatly improve this game as well. Overall, this game is a keeper...

True to the original (review from an owner of the game)

I am a latecomer to the Tenchu series. I played the original PS1 version only about a month ago and was immediately hooked. This says a lot about a game when it can stand up against the slick PS2 titles that are now available. Anyway I have a review for that on Amazon, so go read that if you want to know more about the original.

Suffice it to say, the original is still fresh in my mind when I compare it to Tenchu 3:

Pros:

- Follows the successful formula of the original very closely.
- Much better graphics - some wonderful backdrops.
- Easier to handle controls (using the analog stick) and hence easier to pull off cool moves, like the forward jump sommersault. I used this in the first mission and killed the boss that way- very slick.
- Does not sacrifice easier control scheme for fewer abilities.
- Large environments give you multiple paths to your objective. Also encourages you to explore the space. The first mission I played took a long time to explore the whole space.

- AI is better than the original. AIs follow you better than the original- however there are points where they are still pretty blind.
- There is now a pre-boss before the main boss.
- Wide range of items to use- that can be picked up from slain opponents.
- Stealth kills sum up to give you new combo moves.
- Multiplayer mode.
- Video tutorial system.

Cons:

- Intro cutscene was not as dramatic as the original but it is still top notch compared to other PS2 games.
- You can see farther in this game than the original. By NOT being able to see far in the original, created a greater sense of tension.
- Voice acting could still use some work.
- Camera can be hard to control in tight spaces.

If you are Tenchu fan and want to upgrade your version of the game, this is well worth it.

If you have never played the original Tenchu, Tenchu 3 is a satisfying, heart-pounding stealth game.

If you like games like Quake where you win mainly by full frontal attacks and massive firepower, then this game is definitely not for you.

The Azuma clan returns

Tenchu 3: The Wrath of Heaven is certainly a worthy successor to its two predecessors. It continues along the same intriguing vein of taking on the role of the Azuma clan ninjas, Rikimaru and Ayame. Upon completion of the two deadly ninjas' campaigns, the new character, Tesshu (the fighting doctor), becomes available to play. The story lines for each of the characters is well presented and the various locations where the stories take place are designed quite well and provide a challenge for discovering the best routes to take in reaching the objective. There is a good amount of replay value for the game in that there are three guard layouts for each mission. The graphics for the game are excellent and a far cry from the previous games. All of the character models are animated superbly and move with a natural flow. The in-game music is also appropriate to the various settings and at times is actually quite relaxing to listen to, with its blend of traditional Japanese music and sounds that are more modern. Fortunately, in this department, the modern sounds are simply a garnish and do not overpower the traditional style music. Another nice addition is that there is an option to have either Japanese or English voices for the characters, the Japanese being the best. And of course, the stealth kills are just as brutal as ever. Any fans of the previous Tenchu games, and stealth games in general, would be wise to add this to their collection. Although the game is not nearly as difficult as some in this genre, like Hitman 2 for example, its fresh style and feudal Japan setting definitely set it apart from the crowd.

I played a demo of Tenchu 3 and was hooked on it for good.I eventually got the game and was on it 24/7.The levels excellent in graphics, AI, techniques and weather effects.Main characters include:Rikimaru-a ninja, part of the deadly Azuma ninja clan. Rikimarus weapon of choice is his ninja Katana (Isayuzo).Ayame-a female ninja, like Rikimaru is part of the deadly Azuma clan.Ayames weapon of choice is her dual Wakizashis(small katanas).Ayame has both style, technique and looks.Tesshu-he is one of the unlockables, surgeon by day, hired assassin by night.Tesshus weapon of choice are his bare hands and feet, although he does use a razor sharp surgical needle which he uses in conjunction with his deadly fighting skills to penetrate his victims' skulls etc.Overall though, the game is great. Can you say Tenchu 4?
If you like a good stealth-em-up, then this is the game for you.I can assure you that you will not be dissappointed.Even if you dont like stealth games, you could scrape through the game by just going head-on.But if you prefer head-on games, then i suggest that you get something like GTA Vice city.

Actual Stealth.

Though MGS games have actual stealth too, I don't see how people compare Tenchu with Splinter Cell. I've played Splinter Cell and it's horrible. Where Splinter Cell is heavily scripted and forces the player to do everything in the exact way the developers wanted him to, Tenchu gives a greater freedom. Granted, Tenchu does not have the plot sophistication of Splinter Cell, it is also not a giant series of trial and error experiments like Splinter Cell.

Tenchu is like a gorified virtual simulation of hide-and-seek.
Splinter Cell is playing a protagonist for a director not open to any interpretations of a story other than his own.

For stealth, go for Tenchu. For story go to Splinter Cell, or better yet, just go read a book.

The camera of Tenchu is difficult but intuitive in that stealth involves a limited field of vision. You will not always be able to see everything every single moment. Part of the stealth simulation is being able to assess your chances of being spotted when climbing an open rock face or jumping a chasm. That's where you use the ingame meter which tells where enemies are. When the meter is decreasing, chances are the enemy is walking away, thus, they are not looking in your direction... simple. Intuitive. It emphasizes stealth by emphasizing the importance of scouting, surveying, and patience. Not by scouting and then restarting at the last start point so you can do it just right.

I honestly think that it is the best PS2 game I've seen so far. It has a lot of unusual weapons that you don't normally see on other games. Some of the stealth moves(especially Tesshu)are very interesting. When you get the cheat codes & hints, it makes it even better. Always play a game w/o the cheats first, so you'll appreciate them later. Oh, did I mention the music? Once again...unusual and satisfying! I just wish I would've bought it sooner. I can go on & on about this game, but the max is 1000 characters for this comment, so I'll just end it like this...Everyone needs to atleast try it for themselves. Enjoy!

Every Step Closer

Tenchu is basically the only video game based off a ninja that actually plays similar to an actual "mythical" ninja.

Pros: Fun stealth, various weapons and distractions to use against the enemy, 3 characters to choose from with own stories, multiple ways to complete levels bringing high replayability, 2 player co-op mode, etc.

Cons: No personal mapmaking levels, 2 player co-op needs tweaking (better than none though), camera angles also need tweaking (but what 3D game doesn't)? Not replica of historical ninjas, (but than again, this is a mythical fiction story so we can all go with the flow. Plus it's closer than any other game to make one feel like a ninja).

This is the 3rd installment in the series and it hasn't taken a step back or seem like a complete rehash of the previous two. The ability to try multiple ways to complete each level makes it rare towards replayability. Enjoy.

BUY IT!!
