The Lord of the Rings has done a lot of things right. First the books themselves. Then Peter Jackson's trilogy based on them. Then the Two Towers video game which gave gamers a thriller game that has the chaotic-feel and epic scale of the movie battle scenes. The Return of the King, EA's second LOTR game, continues this streak with a all-out, co-operative, action-packed, and challenging but entertaining game. The game improves on several weak points of the original LOTR game. First, and most noticably, is the addition of the co-op mode. It makes the game a heck a lot better and more fun, since, hey, playing with a friend on a game like this is almost always a blast, right? And the co-op mode also eliminated the annoying split-screen deal that a lot of games with co-op seem to have. It's all on the same screen and is much easier on the eyes. It also makes the game a heck a lot easier, since the game can be very difficult (even on the easiest mode). That would be my only complaint about the game, the fact that it's really hard. It took me hours to beat the Pellonor Fields level and the Black Gate level (those dang Ring Wraiths wouldn't die!). But, hence the title, the game is addictive and you will keep plugging away until you beat it. Yep, it's that addictive. The graphics are also an improvement over the TTT game. The in-game graphics weren't much of a problem, but the cutscenes in TTT weren't very pretty (because of the polygon graphics). ROTK does away with those with cutscenes that are about the same quality of the gameplay itself, which isn't really that bad. The sound, voice acting, and music is perfect, and is one of the best things about the game (except for the gameplay of course!). The sound is an exact representation of what the sound should really sound like. Swords impacting with another object will sound different (correctly) depending on what it hit. Sword-on-flesh doesn't happen as much as in TTT, which is more authentic, since most of the enemies are wearing armor. The sword will instead make more of a clanging noise. The voice acting is just like in TTT. All the characters, besides the orcs, have the actors that play them in the movies voice them in the game. That means you'll have Viggo Mortensen playing Aragorn, Elijah Wood playing Frodo, Orlando Bloom playing Legolas (Go Legolas!), and so on and so on. You'll hear Ian McKellan the most, however, since he plays Gandalf, because he narrarates the cutscenes, which include clips from the movie. The clips are interesting because they usually show what's they need to show with clips from Fellowship of the Ring and the Two Towers movies, so they don't give too much away from the movie if you haven't already seen it. The music is pure LOTR music and is played at the right time. It's epic and is so good you'll have it in your head hours after you finish playing and you won't really care! Overall, this addicting game is one of the best games I have ever played and will be very worthwhile playing it. Even when you're done, you'll still have to master all the techniques, which is again challenging but fun!
A Must Have if you are a Tolkien fan and a gamer

Being a closet Tolkien Geek since high school, my expectations are high. Peter Jackson exceeded my expectations and so did EA with "Return of the King". This is not a "slash and hack" game like many think. The challenges are subtle. Try getting "perfect" for every mission and mastering the charater combinations instead of going nuckin' futs with the controller. Better yet, try doing "banes"! The graphics are excellent along with the voices of the real actors. Words can not help me describe this great game. If you are a Tolkien fan and a gamer, then this is a "must have".

This game is incredible. The grafics aren't that good, but the story line just like the movie. The best thing about this game(I think) is that you can play as the entire fellowship, unlike The Two Towers. If you were to go to the store and buy any game I would sujest The Return of The King for PS2, XBOX, or Gamecube. I also think its better than the other two LOTR games because it has two player. I would recomend this game to any one who hasn't played it yet.
Even better then the Two Towers! *shocker*

Well as my title says, it is better! Not that I though it possible, but I've been proved wrong before.
A whole new side of Middle-earth is seen in this game and through new character's sides and through different paths. Play as Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf, Sam and Frodo as well as 3 other locked characters, gotta beat the game for them though and NO, the cheat codes won't free them until you've beat the game. I know, I tried. :-)
Just as in the Two Towers, this game had loads of nice extras like actor interviews, behinds the scenes, image boards and movie cut-ins. Along with the old actor voice overs, some new ones join in, such as Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Sean Astin, Andy Serkis and David Wenham. Can you guess who the locked characters might be?? :-)
You start the game with Gandalf at the end of Helm's Deep and then take your pick of 3 different paths. The Path of the Wizard, play as Gandalf but do it alone as he is alone on his route. The Path of the King takes Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli to the Paths of the Dead to face the dead army and on to face Mumakil and Trolls to Sauron's front door or the Paths of the (stout little) Hobbits as Sam and escape Osgiliath while hiding from the Ringwraiths, to Shelob's lair and fending off the enormous Spider (ew, bug) to finally facing off with Gollum as Frodo in the fight for the Ring.
Music from the movie, great special effects, actor voice-overs, atractive backgrounds and just a flat out good fight to stay alive make this a really good game. You almost feel like a part of it.
But before you go and buy something you might not like, rent it.
Fun, But Sometimes Difficult

Let me start by saying that I'm a HUGE LOTR fan, and so of course I had to get the video game. I wasn't disappointed, for the most part. You can play as 5 charcters: Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Sam. 4 more are unlocked after you beat the game. There are 3 paths to choose from: the wizards path(Gandalf), the path of the king (Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli), and the path of the hobbits (Frodo and Sam). Also has clips from the movies as an introdction to most of the levels. There are several pros and cons to this game:
Pros:
- Awesome, realistic graphics. Return of the King by far has the best in the series.
- Smooth movement. Every movement and attack is super realistic and super smooth...just like watching the movie.
- Plenty of locations from the movie to play in.
- Allows you play with a friend in co-op mode. The best part about that is there's no more split screens- just one big screen.
- After you beat the game you unlock several secret characters (Merry, Pippin, Frodo, and Faramir), along with interviews of some of the acters from the movies. But the big bonus to me are the codes they give you. After you punch in those codes, the game is all too easy.
Cons:
- Some of the levels are just too darn hard, even when you have the game difficulty set to easy. It took me a couple trys on some of the levels to get past them.
- The introductions to the levels are too long. They include clips from the movie before almost all of the levels, and after you've already seen them it gets annoying. However, you can just skip them by pressing X if you've already beaten that level.
- After you've beaten the game, there's not much to do except endlessly slay orcs and men.
Overall, if you enjoy fighting games, then this is for you. If you're a diehard fan of LOTR, this is for you. If you're neither, then I'd rent it first, and if you fall madly in love with it, get it.
** Select Codes**
While playing, press start. Hold down the L1, L2, R1, and R2 buttons at the same time while punching in these letters. You'll hear a confirmation sound every time you've correctly entered a code:
Unlock Faramir: X,X,triangle,triangle
Unlock Frodo: triangle,circle,circle,circle
Unlock Merry: X,down,down,X
Unlock Pippin: triangle, circle,X,circle (this one won't work for me sometimes)
The following codes are character specific; enter the code that corresponds to the character you're conrolling:
+ 1000 experience points:
Aragorn: up,square,triangle,X
Faramir: square,triangle,up,square
Frodo: down,triangle,up,down
Gandalf: circle,triangle,up,down
Gimli: circle,circle,triangle,X
Legolas: X,triangle,up,X
Merry: down,down,square,X
Pippin: triangle,X,square,X
Sam: triangle,X,down,X

The "Return of the King" is an average beat-em-up at best. The only thing going for this game is the Lord of the Rings license. If not for the movie license this game would have vanished into the abyss that bad beat-em-ups call home. The problem with this game can be put simply: FRUSTRATING. Not because of the game's difficulty (I say this as an avid PS2 Shinobi fan), but because of bad game design. The biggest and most aggravating flaw in the game is the camera. There were countless times in the game that I received a cheap hit or could not attack an enemy at a critical moment because I could NOT SEE the enemy (if you played the game and tried using pikes you know what I'm talking about). This kind of flaw is inexcusable for a game at this point in the game industry. Also in certain levels the camera is fixed and will only move except by rotating or zooming. However unless your character stays close to the camera you will quickly lose site of him as orcs or other enemies block your view making combos excruciatingly difficult. I could go on about other flaws (such as the controls) but the camera alone really hurts the game. If your a die hard LOTR fan who can tolerate a frustrating and mediocre brawler you may like this game but if your looking for quality in a beat-em-up game I would pass on "Return of the King".
IGreat game!

Unfortunately, I have not yet had the pleasure to play Return of the King but have heard a lot about it. Like the co-op mode where you can play side-by-side with your best friend, and the plentiful characters you can choose from, unlike Two Towers where there are only 3 playable characters. And Frodo wasn't even one of them! In ROTK you can choose from Gimli, Legolas, Aragon, FRODO, Sam, Gandolf, and two others that must be new in the movie. It is a huge step up from TT, which was still ands excellent game (I gave it 4.5 stars) but still lacked something more. With ROTK, you get it all!!!!!!! Now, when it asks you if this review was helpful, please click yes.

Oh, Lord, why hack 'n' slash? OK, that was stupid, but hey; hack 'n' slash is mindless crap.
This game has great visuals. The environments are done beautifully, the characters very detailed, everything here is great. But what's missing? Decent gameplay. Believe me, you will get EXTREMELY frustrated after dying countless times. The objectives are pointless, the combat confusing, as you will be playing "Where's Gandalf?" in the battle. The combos are limited, just souped-up sword martial arts. Ugly.
The storyline is basically from Two Towers. The way they change from real life to video game graphics is cool. The voicing is great. The only thing that kept me going on playing, and after several hair-pulling hours of dying, is getting cheats like invincibility, max weapons, max health, etc. and playing a cool Lord of the Rings game. EA needs to tone down the enemies. on Easy mode, they fight like they should be on hard mode. Getting new combos is cool, I guess, and many people will love the outcome of this game. The permanently increasing health, and flaming arrows, will appeal to fans also. Next year I hope EA changes the game, making it much longer, having more replayability (like minigames). But smart making it online and CO-OP!!! That would be the saving grace for this game. Except for those things, its not much different that the Two Towers.
