Best RTS I have played yet

Amazing unit/terrain/building graphics with intense, realistic gunfire and explosions. Good assortment of different unit types, and there are a large number of missions. The graphics engine provides smooth gameplay but higher-end video card and CPU are essential (my system=3ghz, 2GB RAM, Radeon x1950 Pro). I personally like this game much better than Command & Conquer 3 in almost every regard.

***Be sure to patch the game*** I had issues with version 1.0 out of the box including in-game application crashes that ceased after applying the sequence of patches.

Do not get the first release of this game (the one above). Get the game of the year edition. The old edition I had to download over 2 gigs in patches to be able to play online. They basically installed a brand new game on my system and then my saved games didnt work anymore. Overall its an ok game. I thought the story might be different but they just rehash exact scenes and scenarios from Saving Private Ryan. The game plays like a mix of Warhammer 40000 Dawn of War and an RTS version of Brothers in Arms. The gameplay can be really frustrating sometimes, as the mechanics do not seem balanced and realistic. For example, my base is being closed on from all sides without mercy, nonstop, even units coming in from OFF the map, I blow up one undefended building at the top of a map (their base), hitting one of the levels triggers, come back down and kill their units, and what do you know, Im not being swarmed anymore. All I have left to kill are a few rifleman throughout the whole map that was just flooded with units.

Anyways, its worth $20 if you want a game to play, but Im glad I didnt buy it when it first came out.

This is a good game. A little tuff at first. I realy like that map sizes. There are many types of units to keep your interest and the engineers are a blast! :-)

Thanks

This is not your typical Command&Conquer type of RTS. This is much more of a thinking man's RTS. Dont expect tank rushes or mass resource collecting, don't sit and think you only establish a defense and wear your opponent out.

The capture point system works very well, and the graphics are amazing with a system that can handle it. I can zoom all the way down and view the stitching on the grunts backpack...really nice detail.

Overall, a great game.

Nothing new to add

I think the last couple reviews have gotten it right. I gave it as a gift for someone and had to tweak their computer to allow it to run, so that was where I got my game play. I didn't go through the tutorial or read the book (so I didn't figure out the pause thing), and I got stomped every time. The comp AI even on its lowest setting is like a sneaky pitbull. Turn it up and add rabid to that.

Greatly enjoyed the few rounds I did play and am seriously considering buying a copy for myself.

I'm a huge fan of RTS games. This is the best. Awesome graphic, game play and audio. Can not wait for the expansion.

Great Game, but...

Some background: I'm 40. I own a PS2 and a PC. I "game", but I'm not hardcore.

Company of Heroes is an excellent game. The game play is challenging, the interface easy to use, the controls are easy to pick up. The AI work pretty well. Opposing forces will try to flank you, and can often out maneuver you if your not paying attention. There are some quirks in the AI, such as when you command 3 tanks to move simultaneously, they often bunch up and run into each other. A refined AI will allow the AI to 'recognize' each other and avoid these kind of conflicts. Maybe a developer patch?

The team at THQ also did a great job with the environments. The sound scape is well defined and immersive. The physics are also well done. I also appreciate the "realism". ALL Buildings show damage when attached and can be completely destroyed (and not just "story points"). An artillery barrage leaves craters in the ground, which your units can use for cover. Tanks you may have just destroyed can be used as cover for your troops as well. Great realism!

Where the developer obviously meant for the game to excel is the graphics. Detail is amazing! The game is rated "M" for a reason. Explosions cause physical damage to units. Troops die on the field. The game's standard play modes is an 'above and behind' view of the field. The game gives you the ability to zoom down from the "above the field" view to a ground-level view of the soldiers, the equipment, etc. An amazing feature.

My only negative about this game: The system graphics requirements are pretty heavy. My PC is about 1 year old, and with the 1st-generation ATI PCI-e card I have installed, I can get nowhere near the highest level of detail. I've got a lot of detail turned way down to get the game playable. Now, understand that the gameplay still is amazing, even with the lower graphics settings. But I am now looking at getting a new Graphics card because of this game.

I would give this 5-stars overall IF not for the issues I experience with the graphics.

Buyer be warned...before investing in the game, make sure your PC can handle it. If it can, you will be rewarded with a great RTS game!

This game it's incredible, I started using it on a PC with XP and DX9, and now that I'm using my computer with vista and DX10, the graphics updates are awesome!!!
The game gives you hours and hours of replay-avility, with one of the toughest AI's on strategy games ever!
Have to get the expansion!

Incredibly detailed real-time-strategy, and pretty authentic as far as units and maps. Pretty challenging computer AI, but another one of those games thats sooo much funner against other humans.

One heads-up would definetly be on the language. The F-bomb gets dropped several times thru-out a typical game session from the units your commanding, and I'm not aware of anyway to turn a filter/censor on.

This game definitely lives up to its bill as the Game of the Year! I was actually thinking this game was a first-person shooter game, like a Call of Duty; but this is just fine though. I really enjoy the realism. I very much am looking forward to getting the extensions on this game.
