As a huge RTS person COH impressed me and that is something very hard to do. for one the squads act on their own which makes life so much easier. Micro managing is not even needed thanks to your units ability to automatically find cover. I find like many other WW2 games though that the german's are horrifically overpowered. even in 2 to 1 odds one tiger takes down 2 shermans. However American forces make up for this with their ability to salvage or steal german weapons. a group of GI's can steal an mg42 from german infantry they killed, i thought that was cool. the pathing is ok.. could be better prime example is a tank hunters stupidity, instead of going around the easy way to hit a panzer from behind, it will go through the the german antitank infantry first. i love the fact that snipers can actually pick off units that are on certain weapons on a tank or other automobile. for instance i left a few snipers in some buildings and as the enemy forces drove by the snipers picked off the 2 gunners and the sentry on top of the half track. If your new to RTS games you may wanna go through the training first as this can be a hard game if you do not understand how the AI acts. this is a typical THQ game. like warhammer 40,000 you need to capture strategic points to gain resources. the only difference in this is by capturing the point you get the small territory with it that you can use by garrisoning your units in the buildings. most importantly Mounted machine guns and snipers in the higher up buildings. My warning to people about to buy this game is this, 1. CHECK THE SPECS. Company of Heroes requires alot of power. 2. if you have an intell video card just exit this section and pretty much every other new game for PC because intell video cards cant render graphics. my rating for COH is an 9.0/10 like i said earlier if they balanced the Germans the game would be perfect.
Possibly the best RTS game I've ever played

I'm a sucker for practically any WW II game. Combine that with the fact that I've always enjoyed real-time strategy games and this one was made for me. Company of Heroes is an absolutely outstanding game. Everything about it is amazingly well done, from the graphics and character voices to the gameplay and level of realism. Instead of the old and tired "gather resources, build a giant army, and then go decimate your enemy easily in one fell swoop" approach, CoH introduces a unique system of capturing territory to "fund" your war effort. The game is always challenging, but never so difficult that it becomes frustrating (though the Battle of the Bulge mission certainly tried my patience). Even the skrimashes were fun to play after I completed the regular single-player campaigns. This is one game that definitely warrants a sequel, though it's hard to imagine how they could possibly make it any better than it already is.

Completely took me by surprise. The game is simply awesome and I'm not a particularly big fan of RTS games. The physics of the game is great, graphics are well done, sounds effects are realistic. I could go on and on about how well done this game is. Multiplayer is a blast too.
Give it a chance, try the demo and you'll be hooked.
I highly Recommend this game

If your reading this your probably already set to buy this game.
I thought this was going to be some stupid army game with a bad story line
and many many flaws.
Well I was wrong, The gameplay is addictive, the controls are simple (all you really use is the mouse) once you get use to them. This game was NOT rushed, who ever made this game (relic) i think, took their time.
Everything can be destroyed, Mission can be carried out many different ways, it just all around an awesome game.
I'm stationed in iraq at the time, and theres no way I'd rather pass the time.
One of the best RTS games out there.

At the very least, you owe it to yourself to download the demo and try this out for yourself. It does require a pretty beefy computer about 10% of the time when a lot of units get on screen and explosions happening, but with the newer patches available (I think there's a 1.71 patch to play online, and a 1.91 patch with some sort of bug in it), graphical options and consistency improved quite a bit under directX 9.
Anyway... onto the game. The single player is a fantastic experience, I've never, ever cared about the storyline of an RTS game, until this one. I actually cared how things played-out, terrain looked and moved... I really can't describe it other than, they got this one (mostly) right, and it's a religious experience on par with Half-Life and Half-Life 2, playing through in single player.
Some knocks against it:
In single player -> Easy is almost too easy. There are some unique missions, but a few of them let you take your time and simply outlast the enemy. There are bonuses for going under a time limit that's often too quick to match.
In multiplayer/skirmish. -> If you play 'annhilation', you'll notice how weighty tanks play into that style of game (the other style is holding control-points, and that's actually pretty fun and balanced without the tanks imbalancing it so much). I wouldn't say tanks are overpowered, but quite a bit of thought playing the game goes into how to defeat them, and how to get some of your own--with little attention to anything else. Basically they're impervious to light weapons. If one doesn't have a motor pool, rockets, panzerfousts, or other tanks...game over. Not that I mind having to have an opening book, but each game of annhilation plays quite a bit like the last game.
I also didn't like the lack of skirmish customizations. Basically one has to be a green US, the other is a drab Axis (colors are very important for team games, and does one side HAVE to be different than the other side? Can't it be Axis vs. Axis?). Then you can pick 'high' and 'low' resources, and 'random' or 'fixed' for starting points. There's something like 10-15 maps, I think to choose from.

I am more of a first person shooter when it comes to gaming. I decided to buy the original Company Of Heroes due to other reviews I had read. The game training gets you into the action quickly. I have throughly enjoyed playing this game and the graphics and sounds are excellent. just remember that you are controlling alot of troups and tanks at one time and you have to think ahead if you want to beat Jerry.
Mature rating means what it says.

I am also a 43 year old gamer, I figure those of us at this age grew up on good old fashioned war movies and wargaming with dice and model tanks. This game fits the bill for us perfectly EXCEPT the designers forgot most of us have kids we would like to share the experience with.
The SWEARING TOTALLY RUINS what could have been a great father and son experience. I am relegated to playing in the 11pm to 3am window due to the lack of ability to turn it off.
While some may say it's realistic it adds nothing to the game experience. If realism were the key foundation of this game certain other gameplay elements would need to be changed. eg. Some missions award you bonuses for rapid completion, even if it means you need to resort to human wave tactics and take unacceptable human losses. Another "unrealism" includes the "pecking" effect anti-armour weapons have. Most German anti-tank weaponry was very capable with the 88mm and high velocity 75mm rounds quite capable of decapitatiing an M4 Sherman with one hit. If the tankers were lucky enough to survive a disabling hit they would jump ship before the next round came crashing through their inadequate armour. I mention this only to show that the so called "realism" of swearing is not consistent with other gameplay elements.
Other games do offer on/off "blood" toggling and the oversight is a stick in the eye to an otherwise enjoyable and EDUCATIONAL game. Yes this wargame is educational. It can teach your kids that getting to a major objective in life is dependent on reaching minor objectives, that there is more than one way to reach your goals, and that artillery is your friend ;-)
Sadly the swearing will hurt Company of Heroes sales. I know some people I will not be buying it for this Christmas solely on this point. Unfortunate really as the game is entertaining and fun. i love the game, only wish I could play it with the kids.
Frustrating and brutal, just like WWII

Well, this is a hard one. Company of Heroes is a technically excellent implementation of an WWII RTS. On my bog standard PIV3.2GHz with a heavy hitter video card, it's got rock solid stability - well done. Graphically it's a stand-out; the sound too is amazing, particularly the distant rumbles of fighting and men screaming. The tactical element, including flanking; battlefield destructability; a little bit of morale effect; and the interface, particularly the map, are all very well done. Yup, everything everyone else says, and more. Tough if you haven't got a big rig, though.
But.
Maybe it works as a bash and crash multiplayer game, but in the single player incarnation, and, despite its technical excellence and superlative production values, it just seems to be somehow an exercise in heartless and grinding frustration. I could go to work and get more entertainment satisfaction. Am I getting old and jaded? Probably, but take the criticism that it's heartless. The reason is, in the single player, it just doesn't engage emotionally: it lacks StarCraft's storyline and most of all suffers from an absence of well delineated heroes. Its plot, such as it is, is simply and loosely the historic backdrop of the actual campaigning.
"Grinding frustration"? Well, it's something to do with the whole RTS genre, I think. I started gaming in RTS a long time ago and then found the Civs and Total War series. The strategic and tactical freedom in those games renders the RTS genre a contrived sandbox. In this RTS, the resource and victory points system and population cap make you juggle resources endlessly against an unforgiving but relatively dumb AI. It appeals to my inner obsessive-compulsive but drives my other personalities up the wall.
So it's great if you want to relive WWII on a computer screen - by all accounts, the real thing was frustrating and brutal. I don't. I want a computer game to be fun.
Simply the Best

I have been a long time RTS gamer, brought up on Starcraft and C&C. This game deserves to be compared to those great games! It is the best RTS and best computer game overall that I have played in the past couple of years. Once you sit down and play, you can' help but get that "just one more mission" feeling.
The gaphics and sound are simply perfect and extremly immersive. In addition, the gameplay itself is outstanding. Because the environment is fully destructible, no batte will ever be the same twice as you can use the craters, rubble, etc. for cover or for choke points and cover for your infantry units.
Overall, the AI is amazing. The computer will give you a good challenge and will force you to move and react, you can't just sit in your base and build up for an hour. The smallest of problems is that vehicle pathfinding is a little iffy when you try to move two vehicles at the same time, although I have found the the Axis tanks don't seem to have this problem as much as the Allies. This is only a minor flaw, and shouldn't deter anyone from playing this game as much as possible.
In the last couple of years, no RTS has been able to keep my attention for as long as this game has. I continuously find new things/effects and it just stays entertaining throughout. It is even fun to just play a skirmish mission to see what kind of screenshots you can take! Congrats to Relic on a truly stellar game!
Why is it fun?

Well as a video game developer and a student I look at all aspects around the game and I see it being top notch, because the graphics, game play, and freedom the gamer / player has while playing the game.
Also a big plus was being able to have a skirmish mode where you don't have to play missions and you play as either American or German in the game. Besides all of that the missions were great too, but I enjoy playing Skirmish Modes.
Overall this game was very fun and very interactive.
