Great but faults not fixed...

OK, I thought this would be the best game ever, but the graphics are pretty bad, and there are a load of snags. For instance, if you sit down on a chair you are likely to slip inside a wall and crash the game, and it gets annoying when for the millionth time you slip through the ground for no apparent reason. But other than that, this is a great game - a definate must for Driver lovers.

Good, but not great

Driver 2 is one of the best games for psx. however when you're on foot people still run from you like they do when youre in a car. It is fun for the first 10 or so plays but gets boring. the best part is not missions but a joyride mode which describes itself. buildings do pop out from everywhere however youll get used to it. Some of the vehicals you can steal are: ambulances, fire trucks, police cars(find the unused one in each joyride level), school buses, armored tucks, crvs, pickups, hondas etc

A VERY WORTHY TITLE

This is a fun game, and realistic too, also this game improves from Driver 1 instead of the same cop cars in the same cities you get different ones(I.E. Chicago has white-and-blue cop cars that go fast and have good endurance. And Havana has big black-and-white cop cars that r big with one siren and u can easily lose the cops in this city.) And the cities have different cars and styles.GRAPHICS:3/5:The graphics have actually dropped from the Driver 1,b-cos the cars look more blocky but you still get the realistic car effects.SOUND:5/5:The sound ain`t ennoying to me the background music is kind of cool but i am so used to being in Chicago that the music always go`s in to my head when thinking/playing Driver 2,the music in Havana sounds more like action the damaging effects also sound realistic.THE STORY:5/5:(The story isn`t any thing like Driver 1 but the story seems to have also continue into Driver 3)The story is about the criminals cocky bookkeeper cuts a deal with his greatest rival but Soloman Caine and his hired Hitman,Jericho go`s in the pub they are in,called The Red Driver in an attempt to kill Lenny but misses him and he escapes but they then kill the Brazzilian Gangster, which is tooken into a Forensic lab to investigate.and then Tanner(The Charictor u play) then has to meet his partner Tobias Jones so they can follow a Witness, who seen the deal that went on but when they catch him instead of treating him mannerly they take him hostage until he spits out imfo and the story begins.GAMEPLAY:4/5: The gameplay is very fun,you get to exit your car and steal another or walk around and sit down or you can stay in your car and make a mini movie by first getting the law on your tail and go do some stunts like skids,Donuts and go up ramps(Especially the lift bridge in Chicago) and then when you wreck yourself, replay it, and see your actions in Cinematic view and then use the fabulus "Film Director"(A Feature that was in troduced in the first Driver, but i forgot to mention it in my other review) to make your own movies(I am talking about the cool Take A Ride mode).the only down falls are is that there are many glitches such as ppl walk thru buildings and once the police set Tanner up i seen a police car so i decided to follow it,driving like the other, good guys so i could attempt to steal it but when he turned the corner and i followed him there was auto-matic 77% felony and a road block of police cars!.CYA Lata

A Game So Unplayable You'll DRIVE Back To The Store To Return It!

(This is a review that I originally wrote on 07/27/2002)
----------------------------------------

I *LOVE* Grand Theft Auto 3 (for the Playstation 2) and I wanted a game that would be similar to it. I know that no game, except for possibly GTA4, could even come close to GTA3, but I still wanted "more." From what I read about this game, it seemed like a poor man's GTA3. I had Driver 1 on the PC, but could never actually play the game itself because I could not pass that stupid driving test at the beginning of "Undercover" mode. When I read that Driver 2 did not have a driving test, that gave me even more reason to want it.

GAMEPLAY

When I popped the game into my PS2, I immediately went into "Free Ride" mode so that I could get a feel for the controls and check out the scenery a bit. I didn't even move one inch when the cops were after me. Yes, that's right, I was STANDING STILL and the cops were on my b-u-t-t. If the cops are going to be on me like white on rice, I'd at least like to know WHY. I gave the cops no resistance, allowing them the chance to come up to the car and pull me out (like real cops would, and those in GTA3), but they thought it would be best to just keep ramming me!?!

Since this game lacks the Police Bribes and the Pay And Spray of GTA3, the only way I could get the cops off my tail and reduce my felony meter (the equivalent of GTA3's Wanted stars meter) was to hitail it out of there in the hopes that I could lose them. Even though the game promises that you can wipe your felony meter clean by getting out of your vehicle and carjacking another one, since you can't get out of the car and switch vehicles while being wanted/chased, there's no practical use of this "feature."

I decided to try the main "Undercover" mode, hoping that it would be better. The first mission was simple enough. Get from point A to point B. The first time I tried it I failed it because I didn't get to the place on time (I was going the wrong way from the start). Once I figured out that all I had to do was make two lefts then go right every chance I could, I got to the destination with time to spare. Mission 1 Passed! Perhaps this game WOULD get better ... until Mission 2, that is!

Mission 2 involves you having to follow another car. The problem is, unless you're (at most) two car lengths behind him, the game will say that you lost him and thus failed the mission ... even though his car is clearly visible on the screen! After attempting this mission three or four more times, only to get as far as around the corner, I had enough punishment and immediately decided to bring the game back to the store with my Mom's receipt to get a different game. ANY game would be better, even Barney The Dinosaur!

Not even cheats codes could help make this game playable. I used two Game Shark codes to unlock the in-game Invincibility and Immunity (no felony) cheats. However, neither of these would help with mission 2. The Infinite Time Game Shark code would not work, otherwise I *might* have had a chance of barely playing the game ... the key words there are "might" and "barely."

GRAPHICS

This game has the WORST graphics ever seen in a video game of any age. Pong and Pac-Man look high-tech compared to this.

There is more pop-up in Driver 2 than in a marathon of Pop-Up Video on VH-1. You look ahead and see an open piece of land. You plan to cut across that land in order to make the turn at a high speed without having to slow down (or just to take a shortcut). Just as you get within a car's length of that land, a building pops up out of nowhere. BAM! You crashed and damaged your car. Repeat indefinitely and you've got the graphics of Driver 2.

REPLAYABILITY

In order to have replayability, a game must first have playability.

TO BUY OR TO RENT?

NEITHER!

I wouldn't even give the CD to my dog as a chew toy.

If it were possible, I would have given this game a 0 rating. Then again, it kinda deserves the 1 because it has one redeeming quality: it makes a great coaster!

Not what you thought but not the worst of expectation

From the first half an hour of play, the game may seem like the biggest let down dued to the downgrade in speed and graphics from the first Driver however, these are simply small problems to give up for more options and things to do.

Though this game won't give you as much of a impression as Driver, it surely isn't a disappointment. Over time you'll overcome the flaws and discover that they are more to this game than it seems. You can get out of your current car if it's too damaged or you just don't like the colour of it and hope into a passing car, this is a very cool feature in which Infogrames have added. Play it some more and you'll find out that there are switches throughout the city which activate certain areas in the city that was previously hidden or closed. An example is to drive up to the Chicago Cub's stadium and walk to the front ticket booth and with a simple press of triangle, you'll press a button which will open up the gates to the back entrance which will let your drive onto the field. Then get out of your car and walk up the aisle to find a hidden surprise which I won't spoil for you. :)

Overall it's not the best of games but it's not the worst either. The Undercover mode will keep it strapped into your seat as you go through over 30 missions on 2 action packed CD. If your a fan of the first one, you'll love it. If you didn't even know this game existed, you'll love it. The only people that won't like it are the people that expected too much from the game however if you are one of them you would properly have the game already. The only annoying thing that I have found is that you can't get out of the car during a police chase and the game tends to slow down in framerate when there are too many cars on screen or the action gets intense, though it doesn't happen or the time. The ups of this game are that there are more ramps and jumps for all of you gamers that want to test out the car's aerodynamics and more of the city for you to explore.

Don't miss out on taking the Fire Truck or Police Car for a spin. If your tired just walk up to one of the chairs or benches in the game and press triangle to sit down and have a rest.

The wheelman is back and he's uglier than ever

Sure, this is a 32-bit game so the graphics won't be that hot, but boy is this game ugly. Infogrames should take lessons from Squaresoft on how to get the most out of the system (have you seen "Vagrant Story"? You should). But at least this thing plays well. It's just like the first except now you can steal cars which really adds to the replay value. If looks don't matter to you, add this one to your list.

the best

This game really suprized me, after the first driver i thought that it could never be beat, but driver 2 blows it away the roads are curved so its more realistic, and i love the featue of hijacking other cars, i highly sugest that you buy this appealing game :-)

I thought that Driver 2 was an amazing game.I also have Driver and didn't think you could better it,well i was wrong!!!

The best bit is the mix with GTA when Tanner can get out of his car and steal others.

A truely amazing game but isnt my top of the charts........?! WRESTLING is more my cup of tea!!

I borrowed this game for a while from a friend and I thought it was awesome. I am not too fond of the missions or multi-player mode but I think just the driving part is worth getting the game. The cities are very large and wandering around is lots of fun, the only downside to them is that one part of the town looks just like the rest of them.

Could have been a lot Better!

When Driver 1 was released, that had to be one of the greatest driving games around in 1999. Although, when Infogrames released Driver 2, I wasn't sure where they were heading. The first thing I noticed about Driver 2 was the way the graphics looked and how slower the frame rate was. The graphics looked very dry and had a used type look in which I wasn't pleased about. There's also frame problems when your car gets smashed into a building. Driver 2 has the same Survival driving mode, although not as exciting as in Driver 1. There's something about this game that makes the value go down. In Driver 1, you would just drive around Los Angeles in the downtown area, just enjoying the traffic and the cops chasing you. Driver 2 doesn't have that value -- even though you can play Las Vegas at night -- just doesn't make it. Although, its story does make up for the game, and the semi-realistic gameplay is present -- smashing cars up. I just don't have the enthusiam to play this game because of its lack of action and realism.

I loved Driver 1 and still play it today, but I have Driver 2 and it's just under my other playstation games--you're going to be dissappointed with Driver 2--if you loved Driver 1 in most cases.
