ION STORM-NEVER AGAIN!

If any of you have tried to play Deus Ex 2: Invisible War (also an Ion Storm product) and had your computer crash constantly to desktop, stay away from this game. Seriously, you'll be throwing your money away. I've got an Athlon 2000 CPU and a Geforce FX 5200 (w/ the 256 MB chip) and have never played 2 games so piss poor in terms of stability. The producers say that the game should run smoothly at medium settings w/ the FX 5200. For the record I have everything set at the lowest possible settings and the game has crashed over a dozen times so far and I haven't even finished the first mission! There is a patch out now which I installed. Fixed nothing. Actually I spent quite some time trying to tweak things to get the game to run because I loved Thief 1 & 2 (not Ion Storm products). All to no avail. I'll personally never buy another game produced by Ion Storm. They should get out of the gaming business. There are way better developers out there. People who have played Max Payne 2 (excellent) know what I'm talking about. Or Splinter Cell-PT for that matter. Both ran excellently on my machine. Incidentally I've been playing vid games for years so I do know what I'm talking about. As for the positive reviews here, I truly don't know what to make of them. Maybe these people have the latest $400 video cards. I don't know. But if you've got what I have. Good luck. You're gonna need it.

Just got Thief3 [...]

I am so disheartened right now... I'm also about $[...] shorter after my purchase of Thief 3 earlier today. This feels very similar to when I played Deus Ex: Invisible War. I'm sorry but I HATE Thief Deadly Shadows. I have been playing it for hours now and I am just depressed. I put Thief 2 back in and immediately felt happy once again. Here are my complaints so far about Thief 3 Deadly Shadows:

1. SYSTEM HOG!: (just like Deus Ex: IW) I have a pentium 4 2.5 Ghz with 512 RAM and a Ti4800 card and this game is still very jerky!

2. GRAINY GRAPHICS: (again just like Deus Ex:IW)
3. NO SEPARATE RUN COMMAND
4. NO LEAN FORWARD COMMMAND
5. NO SWORD: he's got a little dagger now
6. LOAD ZONES!!!!!!!
7. NO ROPE ARROWS
8. NO SWIMMING

Thief 3 is not smooth like Thief 1 and 2. I haven't yet had fun with Thief 3 and I've been torchering myself for hours now with it. If you are thinking of purchasing this game wait for a demo, I wish I had. I have never been so disappointed ever in a game like this before.

It's quirky, it's consolized, but it's still Thief!

Let's get the bad out of the way first. Yes, the design suffered rather badly for the cross-platform effort. Yes, there were a few good points of the first two games taken out. Yes, the game CAN be a bit of a resource hog.
Now for the good. Firstly, my admittedly mid-range system (XP2200+, Radeon 9600Pro) didn't have too much trouble, except in some lighting-heavy sections. (These ARE real-time shadows we're talking about, that actually affect gameplay.) There are a few bugs in the game, including a serious one involving the AI and the difficulty level- but there are workarounds to be found, and Eidos/Ion Storm are talking about releasing a patch.
But the real meat of the game is in the gameplay, and that's where TDS shines. Most of the levels can take well over an hour to complete, on par with many of the earlier Thief missions. And some of them- including Overlook Mansion and Shalebridge Cradle- are simply stunning in their atmosphere and use of sound and lighting. (Not to mention that the Cradle is touted by many Thief fans as being the most frightening gameplay experience in recent history. I'll vouch for that!) The lighting engine lets you make your own shadows to hide in- open a door in front of a lamp and make yourself a pool of darkness to hide in. The AI on Expert has caught me a few times due to small things, like leaving a chest open. It's not perfect, but it's pretty bright for game AI.
Certainly, the game has its problems, but none of them are impossible to overcome if you come at the game with a fresh mind and a willingness to give it a chance. I'm not sorry I bought it!

my favorite game

Incredibly immersive game.
The transitions between locales are kind of poor but apart from that, I can't think of anything I dislike. It is a rare game that can make a person subconciously hold their breath; Thief DS does it all the time.
I have played Thief since the first episode and DS continues the stealth tradition.
Also, the music adds to the suspense.
Third person view is rather useless but a cool feature nonetheless.
It is definitely a game for older players (its bloody and all that).

Personally, I like this game better than Halo (another of my favorite games).

worthy of the Thief name

Thief 3 successfully moves forward technologically while keeping true to the story and mood of the series. This is a next generation engine with dynamic lighting that requires a beefy video card. I recommend a GeForce FX or a Radeon 9800. I have Windows 2000 with a GeForce TI 4200 and it's playable at 800x600 with low details.

The game has the same voice actors from the first two, which was a big plus for me. It has an OPTION to go 3rd person, but the default for the PC is 1st person which IMHO is much better for this game. Huge advances have been made in the game engine, including graphics, ragdoll physics, and a few AI improvements.

The mood is dark and scary and the story is well done, with tons of exploring and gameplay time. There's no underwater exploring in this one, but frankly the game was so good I didn't even miss it. Lockpicking is also more challenging but with a little practice you'll get fast. If you are a fan of the first couple games, Thief 3 will seem stange for about the first 5 minutes and then you'll love it again.

If you're new to Thief, this game isn't like regular 3D shooters. In this game YOU get to be that dangerous-looking guy in the shadows. The guards and other characters can see AND hear you, and the objective is to move without getting caught by those who would harm you. Sounds simple, but it takes practice and it's quite a rush! (Don't worry, you still have weapons, but the combat is a lot more realistic - you will get killed if you barge into a fully lighted room with 4 armed guards.)

There's not only huge missions, there's a central city area with shops and secrets. You even have your own apartment! All in all this game is like living another life inside your computer and it's amazing!

The best of the great Thief series - but it needs a decent computer

I have only just started to play this great game as my old 1.2GHz PC with 4x [256Mb] AGP graphics card just couldn't handle the action (there aren't many in-game controls for reducing graphics requirements and the game always crashed even with the v1.1 patch applied). Now we have an Nvidia 7950 graphics card and AMD-2 5000 PC the game has finally come to life. Game play is as unique as before, you (the thief Garret) must creep around in the shadows, pick locks and pockets, stealing whatever comes your way unseen. You can knock out the odd guard etc. and drag him into the shadows (as if his body is found the alarm will sound). Everything you steal can be sold to a fence to buy more weapons or given to the secretive Keepers, guardians of the mystical Glyphs, to help prevent the Age of Darkness decending. So no gung-ho charge with a BFG here, you will be overpowered and in Pavelock Prison seconds later, if you are lucky. The totally convincing stealth aspect is unique to the thief series, and the recreation of a rather surreal medieval Europe (with gothic engines and electric lights) is engrossing. It's a world of dark magic, Holy scripts, and religious fervour. So `Beware the Tricksters flame for only the Builder's fire burns with righteousness' - The Hammerite book of lessons.

Most of the levels take place in the city this time (there is one trip to an underworld lost kingdom). However one level really stands out as exceptional - the trip to The Cradle - a now deserted orphanage and madhouse. The game-play in this level is genuinely haunting with an all-pervading air of sadness. There are some other great levels as well, e.g. on the zombie infested ship The Abysmal Gail and in the catacombs of Fort Ironwood. Throughout the game you can get the Hammerite and/or the Pagan factions onto your side by doing them favours and not stealing from them (that much). The picture quality of this game is far better than the two excellent predecessors - hence the graphics demands. You do get the odd glitch, but these are bypassed by saving and reloading. So a great game if your Windows XP PC can cope with it, and now going for a bargain price. The game play isn't too hard and you can save anytime for difficult sequences. Those with older PCs or on-board graphics should try the excellent predecessors Thief 2: The age of metal (pretty good) and Thief: The dark project (excellent). [...]

I waited four years for this?

Thief: Deadly Shadows is a decent game but pales is vastly inferior to the first two titles. It shows in the poor level design and a storyline that promises so much but in the end offers very little. Warren Spector and the IONstorm team absolutely did not take any risks or chances with this title to make something ambitious. Alas, the once fine institution of PC gaming has gone to the dogs. And I have lost respect for Warren Spector who no longer creates anything groundbreaking. :(

First off, let me address the issue of Thief Deadly Shadows being a system hog. I have 512 MB RAM, 2.4 Ghz Pentium 4, and an Nvidia FX5200 sound card, and I run Windows XP and I do not have a problem running this game at all. It looks great, the graphics are fantstic. The gameplay is wonderful, you play a thief, and you have an arsenal of awesome tools to use. I love the fact that in this game, you are free to wander and choose the missions you would like, you can even play a few at once! This game is well worth the money, and it has all of the things I loved about Thief the dark art, Thief gold, and Thief 2. I highly recommend this game for anyone who enjoyed the previous thief games!

Theif 3 is awesome!

First of all! Anybody who complains about it not working on windows 98 should get windows 2000 and stop complaining. Second anybody who says not to buy this game is freakin crazy. and third anybody who's pissed there pants on the Shalbridge Cradle (haunted Asylum/orphanage mission) should use flash bombs not fire arrows and not holy water cause those zombies are super fast and shooting arrows and tossing holy water is too slow. Anybody who wasn't scared of that mission can now play any horror game in the world and say it was as pleasant as a harry potter game on a gameboy advance. Now to the review of the game. I think it was perfect and the climbing gloves are better than the rope arrows, but dont complain cause you really don't need them, except to get into the keeper library at one point. The only thing possibaly as scary (Probably not) than the shalebridge cradle was the keeper enforcers (Picture Nazgul from lord of the rings with double sided hooks on their hands and white masks). but anyway if you can get past the shalebridge cradle than you'll love this game!

Game would not load for me

I didn't get to play thief, the game would not completly install. I kept getting an error with the third data file. I e-mailed the manufacturer but did not recieve any response so I have to rate this game with 1 star for the lack of support from the manufacturer.
