I am really into comic books and all of that, so i thought City of Heros would be a good game. so because i was able to get somthing as a gift i picked this game. I told my mom all about it with great detale and much excitment. Then when i was setting it up. you first, have to create a user name and a password just to play the game. Fine, i could do that but the thing that botherd me the most is that to play the game even without going online and teaming up with other people you have to sign up and subcribe to the game. and the cheepest was signing up for $14 on your cridit card and them charging you. i did not think that it was worth it to play this game. i did not think that my parents who bought this game for me should have to do this. it is not fair. and worst of all it dose not say this in any of the reading that i have done on this game. i just found out today when i was setting it up on my computer.
ps. don't buy it you end up paying more then the 30 bucks it coasts to just buy the game
City of Heroes not my thing

If you dont like comic books you wont like this game. If you like good graphics you wont like this game. If you like quick servers you wont like this game. If you like making a character look like the tick or something like that. You still probably wont like this game.
Keeping with the fact that its the year 2004 i want something better than this junk. I came, i saw, i left thankfully and took as much money back from this game as i could get out of. If you buy by accident sell it. Sell it fast. Even distributors are agreeing about this and making special deals for you to get it. They're tring to get rid of this game.
Absolutely disgusting

I have been playing this game for 2-3 months now. In issue 3, which is the latest patch for this game, NCSoft has drastically reduced the powers of certain player types making them worthless. NCSoft should have done this at the beginning of the game not at the middle of the game. I played 2 months to develop to the level I am in & now I realized that my archetype has become less powerful & more or less useless. I am a regeneration scrapper & they have taken down my shield in issue 3. I contacted NCSoft but they said they cannot do anything about it. Now If I had known in the begining that such changes will be done for this archetype, I would not have chosen this archetype. This is not ethical game development where one day NCSoft wakes up & drastically reduces the power of one archetype. They have absolutely no consideration for player who play a particular archetype & how their decision will affect these players. I spent so much time in developing this character and now I find my powers reduced making my character partially useless.& the response which I got from NCSoft is that I should not complain to them about this but should post it in the forum so that various members can discuss. What jerks?? This company does not know how to develop games, & one fine day they may wake up & cut other features, reduce features of an archetype etc., without even considering the players who are playing it. So there is absolutely no point in playing this game.
Further more in this game, there is only one thing to do kill..kill...kill -> get xp at a very very... slow rate -> level up. & this becomes very frustrating when a player is between 37-49. I am also playing World of Warcraft right now & to tell you very frankly World of Warcraft is WOW. Players have got thousands of things to do & explore besides killing.Well, I will be switching over to World of Wwarcraft permanently.
Edited review: two months of play later

I bought the game.
There was a bad disk.
12 hours later i had a website to download the whole game from.
That 12 hour wait was the longest I've had from a CSR since.
The game does what it says it will and more. You become a hero fighting villains and interacting with a huge community online. You get to create your hero from scratch. While every power that might cause a trademark infringement is not in the game, you should easily make a hero that fits -you- and what you want and then dress them as you like.
The first major FREE content release is here, after a series of minor patches and tweaks and additions. Now costume options are even more profound. There is more to do for those who spend 12 ours a day playing this game (I'm not one of them so I'm still taking my sweet time and enjoying the game) and got bored rapidly. There is a lot more for folks like me for when I do finally make my hero strong enough to face the new dangers added.
Botoom line: They added a lot. More is going to happen this fall. Next year they release the villain side of you to play. Over two hundred thousand players, active communities, and lots of fun. Check out the website before you buy if you have any doubts.
You need:
A mid end machine, with a decent graphics card.
A high speed internet connection. Your AOL dialup is usable but will prolly leave you frustrated.
Time. Just take time spent watching TV and turn it into playing this and you might avoid getting divorced.
The Game is suitable for teens. The content folks and CSR's vigorously enforce any violations. There is a profanity filter on as a default at start. The chat window can be closed for the unsupervised very young.
Play the super hero you have inside you and make some new friends online.
How the Mighty are fallen...

A few months ago i found a free trial of this game on gamespot and continued on to play the ame for a few months. I had a a blaster - and yeah, it was a lot of fun to play.
This game is great for a few months, provided that you have friends to play with, good friends mind - there are some really horrible people who ruin the experience.
The support staff are great - i had a problem and they would correspond with me 3-5 times a day and answer everything professionally and quickly.
Now, this is a good game, and if you have a holiday coming up and some cash to burn i suggest this game, however it is very easy to become very bored with the game, the level grinding, the mediocre and repetetive missions, the death system (so unlike the system implemented in WOW - you get XP debt which slows your progress) which was one of the reasons i quit - i was so steeped in XP 'debt' that i could see no way to get out with my character, a few bad missions and Bam, i got a ton of debt to do. Its just not friendly to the casual player.
Seriously, this is a good game, but it gets repetitive and the latest 'issue' or update just made it more so. I am now investigating getting World of Warcraft, Battlefield 2 or Guild Wars.
Fun but very linear

Great game but it doesn't have much depth. Granted this will be fixed in upcoming expansions but its just not enough to keep me away from World of Warcraft...
Defeat bad guys, get xp, level up, get enhancements, rinse, repeat.
WoW comes out, this game is gone....
NOT WORTH IT!!!!!

This game is incredibly boring. The website is way to confusing. Your character creation is cool but for the price its not worth it.
This shouldn't be an online game

I was over at my friend's house, and he has City of Heroes. Of course I wanted to play it. When i first started I was impressedwith the Character Creation screen, this was one of the best character screens i have seen. After I made my character the troble started. I started to play the tutorial. The tutorial was SOOOOOOOOOO long. I thought it would never end. Finaly when i finished it i started playing in my first city. I play Star Wars Galaxies where I am used to changing professions and gaining skills by crafting ect. There is no crafting in this game I thought, "wow, then how do people get money to buy items?", well there ius no items. In fact there is hardly no interaction at all. I thought, "well then whats the point in making it an online game? Aren't Online games games where people work together to accomplish tasks?" Well not in this game. I dont recomend this game unless you like to go solo in online games and not work in groups.
Fun, yet horrible

i bought this game like 2 years ago, so im kind of late on the review.
anyways, i really thought the idea of being a hero with a whole arsenal of powers would be cool, and its awesome. this game can really help a kids dreams, such as flying, running at superspeed, teleporting, you name it. the game lasted me about a year though. then i gave it up for so many reasons its not even funny.
first off, i have dial-up, and unless u have dial-up too, u'll have no idea what im talkin about. the game updates so slow that i could leave it one all night and it wouldnt be done. its like theres a new update every month or somethin, cuase after you get through update 1, u got 5 more to go. if u have the life to make it past the next 5, u got 6 more to go (im being serious, it was horrible). and then, after u spend so much time updating the game, you finally get to play, only to find out your computer cant move fast enough to keep up with the rest of the game. if your hero walks into a highly populated area in the game, it just freezes. it gets incredibly annoyin when your in the middle of a fight and the game freezes, then the next thing you know ur on the ground dead. also, unless you have some really new and high tech computer, loading a into a new map in the game is so long you can leave the room, fix up lunch, come back and find out that the computer didnt even download a bit of the map. what else is annoying? how long a mission takes. at a point in the game, you'll be getting missions that take 2 hours to complete.
even though the game is really fun, its not even worth tryin to play.
so unless you have a really good computer, dont buy CoH, its a waste of money and huge chunks of ur life.
