If the phrase "Massively Multiplayer Online" has "must subscribe to play at an additional charge," hidden somewhere in it, then I'm sure I'll be able to revise my # of stars upward.

So, to reiterate what now is at least listed in a *review* somewhere, you have to pay seperately for time on their server(s?).

Which it says in tiny print on the box, I see, now that I have it in my hand.

Nor will it let me open an account without giving credit card info, despite the fact that it says I get a free month with the purchase of the game.

Horrible introduction to this game format.

Worth your dollar!

To start off I would like to tell you that I have had this game since Aug 2004. So, I have seen almost everything.

The patching, depending on your computer, can take awhile. This computer takes about half an hour to download a free new issue. This computer is five years old so unless you have some serious problems with your computer, there should not be too much trouble.

Once in game, there is the most wonderful character creation mode ever. Almost everyone I have met in the game has at least ten characters because the creation mode is so addicting. Unless people copy costumes, you never see the same costume.

The powers are also quite cool. Some people say that certain powers are more powerful than others but, depending on your style of play, you can make almost any of them work amazingly.

The leveling process is quite interesting. Depending on your level, the gameplay may be more fun than at other levels. I, personally, am extremely bored with the starting content because I have had the game for so long but for the most part, the rest of the journey (to 50) changes.

I also have to say that the community is great...there are some really active, fun players as well as "supergroups."

So, now you are thinking...Why for these bad ratings?
Well, for the most part, a lot of the bad ratings came at the very start of the game or around summer/fall of 2005, where there were major changes to the game to accommodate CoV and just in general. One of the major "nerfs" was to the Fire Powers of a Tanker(one type of hero). They weakened a power tremendously so that people would not "power-level" other characters. They also shortened the gap where you can get xp (e.g. level 41 tanker can not get xp if there is a 47 blaster on the team) This build had become very popular and with the power of fire went a lot of the CoH population. I have to say that whenever a power is quite powerful, it gets weakened. But hey, heroes have to push through those obstacles.

Slowly, but surely, that population is building back up and I encourage anyone looking at this game to buy it!!! (Champion Server);-)

Bottom Line: I am still playing aren't I!!!

One last thing, the game comes out with new Issues (expansion packs) on an average of every four months, not to mention patches and tweaks to fix game content. With the most expensive payments, it costs $60 for four months, though you can get it cheaper. Normal expansion packs cost about $40-$50. Those ten or so extra bucks for the fixes adds up to being worth it! (I am sure you can spare a couple dollars for the fun ;-) I dont see many other games cranking out expansion packs that quick!

THIS GAME IS AWSOME

If you have heard bad reviews about this game, then totally don't listen to them...let me tell you, I bought this game, and I can't stop playing!!! You can shoot fire, ice, electricity, and fight evil gangs! It is so much fun...SO MUCH FUN! The ONLY, and I mean ONLY disadvantage to this game is that you have to pay $15 a month, but it is SO worth it. Graphics are awsome, powers are awsome, and gameplay is totally awsome...heck, it was hard to stop playing just to write this review!!! Also, dont worry, there are like, no glitches or problems in this game, I havn't had ANY trouble at all. So go to target RIGHT NOW, and buy this game, trust me, you wont regret it.

Fun, if you can get in

This game is wonderful. Compared to the other MMORPGs on the market, it is smoother and offers more variety, both in character creation and in quests within the game. The additonal content they already have slated looks great too.

Unfortunately, I spend approxmately 50 minutes trying to log in each time I play. During the Beta test, this was understandable, but now the pre-order head-start has begun and I am still experiencing the same difficulty. NCsoft has a quick tech response (usually a matter of 30 minutes or so, even later in the day), but the technical response is simply that the servers are too busy. The servers will be getting more busy when they open the game to the general public. Before buying the game, you may wish to check the bulletin boards on their website, which should have threads about the status of this problem (which does not effect all players). I hope they solve it soon, becuase the game is great, once you get in.

It's a fun game BUT....

I had played City of Heroes for over 2 months at more than 20 hours per week. I enjoyed the game tremendously, however, the game administrators kept putting a 3-day suspension on my account. Because the company repeatedly made mistakes in suspending my account, I had decided that enough is enough! They were suspending me from play, yet billing me for those days that I couldn't play. Is that fair to anyone? Not to mention, my two brothers and another friend had the same thing happen to them. Needless to say, they are no longer fans of City of Heroes!

You have to pay every month just to play!!!

I had been looking forward to this game for many months. I still don't know if the game itself is any good because on receiving it I discovered that in order to play the game you have to pay a subscription fee every month. Not only have I paid my US$36.99 for the game but I have to pay an extra US$15 per month just to be able to KEEP playing. Unless you subscribe you can never play it! Ridiculous. This is the most evil scenario in gaming I have ever heard of...I will not play any game under these conditions.

I have played this game and have a lvl 20 character. If i could,i would have never played this game. The only thing good about it is the fact that it character creation is unique. But other than that the missions are the same over and over. The customer service is messed up and there are to many forums. There website is also very bad and they will make you sign up for a million things before actually doing anything in the game... STAY AWAY FROM CITY OF HEROES... You'll thank me for it in the end...

Abysmal first release, do not buy.

The best part about this game is the character creation. There are thousands of different combinations. I spent a good while constructing my first character, and was excited about the potential.

It took me several hours to log in. The account creation requires you to go to a website which takes your details and then supposedly sends you a registration code. This took a long time to arrive, and by the time it had my login process had expired and I had to start again. Which requires you to receive another registration code. Which again takes a long time to arrive.

Luckily I actually managed to get this done, and set about creating my character. Once into the game I was immediately struck by the horrible lag. My character would run ten paces, then immediately be teleported five back. Moving around inside locations where you are required to steer yourself through a door is a headache. Watching other characters disappear when you try to click on them is annoying.

I was disconnected from the server once, was told it was unavailable twice, and was kicked to desktop due to a runtime error twice, all in the space of two hours play.

After crashing to desktop because of the runtime error, you are then unable to log back in for a while because the game believes you are already logged in.

This is a revolting first release. Doubtless a patch may clear up some issues, but I played Everquest when it was first released and did not encounter this many problems in such a short time.

I will stick with it in an effort to get my money's worth, but the other reviews on Amazon have not been encouraging.

Security, and monthly fees

When you buy this program, you cannot sell it or let someone else play it. This prevents piracy, but also will prevent me from ever buying a title from these clowns again. I do not duplicate games, but I do not want to keep a game that is more borring than watching Sesame Street. Being that many people compared it to RPGs, and stated that it is better, DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE! This game is more repatitious than the original pac man. Not to mention that they want you to pay $15.00 a month to play. The graphics are okay, but not worth paying $30.00 to buy the package, and $180.00 a year to play online. Unless you are slow in the head, and heavy in the pocket, DONT BUY THIS GAME!!!

Good game, unsure buy

The game looks as though it has potential, but as a gamer, I'm not sure I'm ready to pay the monthly fee that the company has yet to decide on. Also, these games are supposed to be "never ending" but take an example from Earth and Beyond, it's ending after two years, with a similar type of product. Just be ready to drop the game, for after a while, it will become obsolete.

Summary:
Taken from the CoH Website,
Question
What is the probability that we will have to pay a monthly subscription fee for CoH?

Answer
There will definitely be a monthly subscription fee for CoH. The exact fee hasn't been established yet, however, but we'll let you know on the web site just as soon as it is.
