Sim Theme Park all over again

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 4 / 4

This game should have been
an expansion pack to Sim Theme Park - and priced as such - as it's
hardly a sequel. If there are any major differences or improvements,
I haven't found them yet. You have three themed areas to choose from
(Sim Theme Park had five) and you climb the corporate ladder by
developing your park with various rides, managing your staff, and
completing challenges that will ultimately allow you to progress to
the next themed area. The system requirements are steeper in this
game and the load times are excruciating. Don't listen to the box, you'll need at least a P350 and even then only if you have a
fast video card or you'll be struggling. If you do decide to change
the screen resolution, the game shuts down without giving you the
option to save your park first - a very irritating
annoyance.

Another annoyance is the constantly yapping announcer
(you think Bullfrog would've listened to all the complaints people
were making in Sim Theme Park). For instance, one of the challenges
involves increasing the attendance by a certain percentage. To do
this you may decide to lower the entry price (hey, maybe I'm not
Michael Eisner and I don't want to gouge my customers!) Unfortunately
this will cause the announcer to annoy you over and over that your
entry price is too low. Or maybe you've researched all the rides and
attractions you can build. Doesn't matter, it'll yap incessantly that
you need to put your scientists to work to the point where you want to
slap its little blue face.

The rides don't differ much from one
area to the next; another consistent complaint about Sim Theme Park.
I don't find fault in this as most amusement park rides really aren't
much different from one another, but it would've been nice to see
Bullfrog step up to the plate and offer unique rides that violate the
laws of physics in the real world. One problem I ran into in this
"sequel" involves the potential of rides interfering with
one another. In the first park, I built a rollercoaster next to a
large rock formation. Unbenownest to me I found out this rock
formation later became a ride I needed to build. Unfortunately, there
was no way of making this happen without completely destroying my
existing rollercoaster at considerable expense.

The last major gripe
for some involves the gameplay itself. It's very evident the
developers did not want to make this complex to the point where you
felt like a Harvard Business grad by the time you finish. Instead the
focus is more on putting out fires minute to minute while still having
time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. You can adjust the speed of
the gameplay so it can be as slow-paced or as frantic as you want and
this function works well. Many people will be put off by the lack of
"sim" in Sim Coaster, but now you can't complain because I
warned you in advance, right? Also, the AI of your staff seems to
have improved considerably - puke doesn't dry for four hours on the
sidewalk like it did in the last game.

The area where this game
shines is simple - camcorder mode. With a click of the mouse, you get
to see the park and ride your coasters in first-person view as if you
were a visitor instead of the overhead "God mode" view.
After spending an hour carefully designing every twist and loop,
riding your creation is a nice reward for your efforts and a lot of
fun. You even get to see the other shops and rides you've built from
the view of the front car as well as hear the kids screaming as you do
the triple corkscrew. Again, this was in Sim Theme Park and nothing
much has changed. It would've been nice if they added the ability to
actually go into the shops or play the sideshow games. A nice
improvement to this game is you can design the coasters in advance,
then place them fully formed in your park later.

I still think Sim
Theme Park was revolutionary for its time but the lack of significant
improvements make me a little more critical this time around. Hope my
review helped.

Works fine for me

I have Windows XP and this game works fine. However, the graphics engine is still sort of slow and slightly jerky, even if you have a good graphics card and a 2-ghz processor. If you like making theme parks, then I would get it. This is not, however, what I would consider to be a good roller coaster building game. In that sense, the name is very misleading. The coasters aren't that realistic and riding them only makes you feel bad about your hardware, no matter how good it really is. If you're looking for something to build coasters and have an enjoyable ride, I would suggest Ultimate Ride or Hyper Rails. Hyper Rails is pretty complicated, though, compared to Ultimate Ride, but Hyper Rails is more involved with the theme park aspect while giving more coaster options. Ultimate Ride has a few theme park type options, like "props," but you can't shape the environment as much.

Its no roller coaster tycoon

Its completely the same as Sim Theme Park. The way you build and ride the coasters is the same as Sim Theme Parkm, and I think Sim Theme Park has a larger variaty of coasters. After actually building the ride itself riding the ride is jerky and unrealistic. If you want a theme park game get Rollercoaster Tycoon. If you already have Rollercoaster Tycoon save your money.

NOT FOR XP

Rollercoaster Tycoon vs. SimCoaster

I tried this game after playing RCT for quite a while, so I might be a bit biased. However, I think that this is really a clone of RCT. It does have one cool feature that I do wish RCT had. You can actually ride in the coasters you build! That alone makes it a must have for the computer game buff that likes these amusement park sim games. I recommend it. After all, if they're both fun and well done, why not play both?

Don't waste your money. Buy Rollercoaster Tycoon instead

I love simulation games. I own all the Sim games, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Tropico (new game - Excellent!), Ceasar II, Postal, etc. The graphics on this game might have been impressive in 1994 when the original Theme Park (which this is derrived from) came out, but they are poor compared to todays standards. When I opened the box and played the game, I felt like I had been ripped off. This is Sim Theme Park with a new name and some slight changes. Sim Theme Park was not much better than Bullfrog's Theme Park. If you want a fun simulator of a theme park with great graphics and some funny things (like drowning your unhappy visitors in the lake, or crashing your roller coasters on purpose) then get RollerCoaster Tycoon and the expansion packs for that game.

I bought this game thinking it would be way better than Roller Coaster Tycoon, and plus: You could ride the rides!

I was WRONG.

Don't Waste your money! BUY ROLLER COASTER TYCOON!

It Sucks, The Grapihcs Suck, It takes 10 minutes to load (no kidding) and it is not realistic.

A very good game

This game is much betetr than RollerCoaster Tycoon- you can ride the rides, the graphics are 3-D, and it is much betetr than Sim Theme Park! The advisor in this game bugs you less than in Sim Theme Park, and the graphics are stunning. You have a variety of rides to choose from, and there are three themes (in Sim Theme Park there were four) but they are betetr than the ones in Sim Theme Park. It is more detailed and much more fun then RollerCoaster Tycoon. There is also a new worker you can hire- a gardener to water your trees and plants! This game is definetely worth the money, and is a great upgrade from Sim Theme Park.

I am a great fan of Sims, Zoo Tycoon, and games of that nature. I recently bought this, and just started playing. It is totally awesome! You can build/design rides in three different areas, and a challenge or something will always come up so you're never bored. I would reccommend it to all kids and pre-teens who like games like this! (it is also addictive! :-D heehee)
