This game has very intense, drawn out, and franky scary combat. There are some instances when Im pinned down by enemy MG fire and it realy seems like its real. The graphics are great and the whole game has a sense of realism. The fighting has a sense of monotony even though, it is always enjoyable. Also the game is non-stop fighting, and bloody fighting at that. It is really cool.
What were they thinking??!!??

After reading up on this game for what seemed like forever, it finally comes out. I was all excited to pick up a copy. I had no problems installing it, as i have read many people are having. I DO have some very big gripes with this game though.
#1. I heard about 15 "F words" in the first two minutes of the game. I know its war, but the language is extremely foul. It rivals the Uncensored version of Vietcong in my opinion. That doesn't make for good gameplay. Not only does it offend me, but I wouldn't play it when my wife, or kids are in the room.
#2. This game has a HUGE problem with the line of sight. There is no target reticule, which i find extremely annoying, but tolerable. However, when you bring up your gun sight when standing behind an object, you could have someone dead in the middle of your "site", it doesn't register. If you are standing behind a rock, or even a dead cow, your shots will not register even though your gun is clearly feet above any obstacle. The reverse is true, in if a guy is standing behind a large wagon, and you can clearly see him from the waist down, the shot will not register because he is behind an obstacle. Its not just one board either, i have testeded it extensively. There will have to be a MAJOR patch for this game before i consider playing it the whole way through. I just can't stand the total lack of work that went into the targetting. It makes the game frustrating ,and generally not fun.
If Only I could load the game...

Unfortunately this game would not load out of the box. After contacting UBI Soft support and answering several times that my system meets or exceeds their published minimum requirements, they provided me with a long list of fixes. After trying the first few with no success I gave up. I did however load and unload this software three times before giving up.
I have loaded and played with great success Call of Duty, Call of Duty II, Medal of Honor with all of the expansion packs, Far Cry, Doom3 and had no such problems. I have returned the game for replacement or refund without any Luck so far. Gaming is for entertainment not work. Stay tuned and avoid this game if your specs are marginal. I have a 2.4 Ghz, 512 Ram, NVidia GeForce4 MX420, 64MB, running Windows XP.
Great Immersion, Unsuitable Language For Some

Never bought a WWII title before, and I had heard good things about this title, so I figured I would give it a try.
Gameplay is very intuitive, controls are easy to master in a short period of time. Until you figure out the little things that help succeed in a mission, you can end up doing a mission over several times.
Good graphics - great immersion between graphics, sound, and the stress of trying to complete a mission with bullets whizzing by you.
ONE thing...In striving for realism, there is some offensive language. I am sure that soldiers on D-Day weren't saying "Golly Gee - someone is shooting at me", so I get their drift. But the truth is, be prepared for it...It starts during the opening scenes. You will hear F***,A**h***, and S*** during the game. There are a few gruesome bodies in the game, but nothing major.
All in all, a great game, but not for children, and not for those who don't want that language coming from their speakers.

First off, Kyle, a GeForce 4 MX420 is not "a very common video card." In fact, it's an outdated one that can't even handle the best games that are out there today.
Secondly, I don't know what your source of bugs/crashes are, but for the other people reading this, you should go to www.gamerankings.com and search for BiA. Read those reviews too as well as user reviews. Heck, go to any forum and they'll sure be talking about this. I prefer reading forums at hlfallout.net (there is an official thread about this). So far, it's a mixed review with some people liking it and others hating. It's hit or miss with this game.
The graphics are a little old- it's based on the OLD Unreal engine. That sucks. Gee, in hindsight, I should have given this game a three star rating for mediocre. Gameplay gets repetitive after a while, though it's nice to have something a little bit more realistic (in terms of team tactics, layout of battlefield, etc.).
Poorly developed game

Careful with the hype surrounding this game!
The list of flaws for BiA is extremely long but I'll try to sum it up here:
First, it will pretty much be a miracle if you can install this game without any trouble. Because BiA was developed in a rush and on DVD, it can provoke all kinds of conflicts with your hardware, no matter how recent and up-to-date it is. It also conflicts easily with a few softwares, such as Nero. Just take a look at the Ubisoft or Gearbox forums and you'll get an idea of how bad it is, since half the questions and complaints are installation-related...
As far as the game itself, I was also disappointed, at least when I finally managed to install it (which took a while since it messed up my whole system). Even with a very good config, the game does not look that great, especially because of this useless blooming effect. I might be wrong, but I don't think soldiers had some type of halo surrounding them 60 years ago...
The environments are poorly detailed and you'll be left wondering how to pass a 3-foot-tall wall or invisible barrier.
The gameplay is where the difference should be made, and it's fun...at first. It's probably much more realistic than other WWII shooters, but it gets annoying very fast. The flanking stategy is fun at the beginning, and relying on your buddies and giving them orders is cool too, but when it's the same thing over and over and over again, it kinda takes the interest and the fun out of it pretty quick.
Also, don't worry about your guys in case they might die, they'll be resurrected in the next mission. And be prepared to shoot 15 bullets at an ememy who's right in front of you, because ze germans were apparently made of steel...
Anyway, this game was a huge disappointment to me, and it didn't take long for me to get rid of it. Of course it's nice to have a game that's not a Rambo-like rampage like most of the other WWII FPS out there, and the fact that it's based on a true story with true characters, existing environments, and genuine military strategy is certainly a great idea. But what's the point if you're not even having fun playing it, right?
I suggest you wait for Call of Duty 2 (or play the previous one) instead of wasting your money on this game...

AI programming perhaps the worst in any game. Solders duck in front of cover, stop cover fire for no reason, will not cover player while moving on flank, has to be directed who to shoot at and from were, will not react during fire fight without direct orders from you, and when taking direct fire from the flank has to be told to protect themselves. All the hype about super smart AI is just that, hype.
Game balance is tipped hopelessly in Germans favor. The German bots, who all are uber solders to the extreme, not only are they able to pick off your men while crouched behind cover or while running with a bolt action gun, they'er also psychic and can track you from behind walls. They also have spiffy tanks that can out maneuver you on foot. Leaving the game winnable but frustrating in lower difficulty setting, and a serious drag in difficult. Not features most people look for in a game.
Even with countless gamers screaming about the need for a patch on message boards all over the web, Gearbox is very slow in delivering. Since Gearbox's official stance is that the game is "good enough" and all the glitches are in the players heads, it is very unlikely that in game SP problems will be fixed even with the patch.
But hey, it does look pretty, so if swaying grass effects and well drawn character eyes is very important to you then by all means get the game.

Band of Brothers is, in many ways, a more-advanced version of THQ's Full Spectrum Warrior. Like FSW, you are in charge of a squad of soldiers, and the real purpose of the game is to advance your squad through a map towards a goal, all the while fighting off computer-controlled enemies.
While I rated FSW quite highly (in retrospect a little too highly) largely because of its novelty value, this game just doesn't represent enough of an improvement to warrant a good review.
There are many differences that would seem to be major improvements. You now control a squad leader, who can not only issue orders to his teams, but he can also engage the enemy himself, if need be. You troops can now leap over obstancles, as well as clear buildings. Both enemy and friendly AI is pretty good. You own men will nearly always take cover when appropriate, and will automatically engage the enemy if they have a line-of-sight with them. They do tend to get in your way, but they will do everything they can to stay alive. The enemy will, at times, try to flank you, particularly in some battles that put you on the defensive. For the most part they just hunker down in their positions.
Another new feature is the ability to command vehicles. In some missions you will have light and medium tanks that can be used to provide a withering base of fire, and can be used as mobile cover. This is a big improvement over FSW, where the M2 Bradleys would often rumble off without doing anything useful.
Unfortunately, the game suffers from a number of flaws. To begin with, like FSW this game is entirely scripted. Most enemy positions have an obvious flanking route, and generally no other avenue of approach to consider. While some missions are truly dynamic, for the most part once you've beaten a mission, there's no reason to ever try it again. Also, the missions themselves are pretty short. Most can be completed in ten minutes or less, once you know how.
Also, the game quickly becomes reptitive. Walk along, see the enemy (who is generally pretty hard to miss), have the support team lay down a base of fire to fix the enemy, than take the assault element and finish the enemy off. It never really changes. After the first half-hour of this, you'll either love it or be thoroughly sick of it. I was in the latter category.
Lastly, I hate to say this, but the Airborne thing has really been done to death. In the last several years we've seen Band of Brothers (both the book and the excellent HBO series), Medal of Honor and Call of Duty. While the 101st Airborne was certainly a gallant unit that faced tremendous odds, there really isn't that much more to tell. From a gaming perspective, a leg infantry unit would be more interesting. Certainly, there would be a much greater array of vehicles to use, such as half-tracks, tanks, tank destroyers, self-propelled artillery and even self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery. There are many leg infantry divisions that have not recieved an iota of attention since they were demobilized following WWII. Why not tell their story?
Does not live up to any hype

First of all was looking forward to this when it was announced. It was touted as the most advaced PFS game on the market to come out in terms of graphics, ai and squad tactics. Once the game was installed the dissapointment began. Lets begin:
The weapons accuracy in the hands of the player is so bad you would be hard pressed to hit the broad side of a barn INSIDE the barn. The enemy can hit you at any distance.
Your squad mates can only say about three or so lines and what they say gets real annoying real fast, they don't take cover right away when fired upon and when you tell them where to go they often run out into enemy fire on the way to their spot even though the better and more direct route would be out of the enemies line of sight. If they get killed they have the ability to come back from the dead in the next mission.
The graphics on the highest level is medicore at best, well below that of COD and its expansion.
The opening sceen was a direct rip off of Band of Brothers just before the jump. The D-Day jump scene was extremely weak as the AA fire is less than some celebrations in many parts of the world, once on the ground the ambient sounds of the war and parachutes in the sky is so infrequent you wonder if you dropped a day early.
The levels are very scripted and have only one way through each level regardless of the original intentions.
I did find one aspect of the game entertaining, when you do finally manage to shoot one of the enemy he goes stiff as a board before he falls to the ground. Found that somewhat comical.
The hidden features that you can open once you win each level at different degrees of difficulty is a complete waste of programming space. You get to see photos of the devs terrain "fact finding" vacation in Frace, video them making the game and such. So what.
Other WWII FPS games at one point or another will give you some sort of feeling that you were there even if for only a moment, this one was sterile the whole way through. No immerision factor at all.
Once I won the game I uninstalled it and haven't gone back since, will be selling it on ebay to get some money back. I won't be picking up the next installment of the series either but am waiting for COD 2 to come out.
A great game indeed!

If you want a realistic WWII game, then buy this one. If you want a simple run-'n-gun shooter, then look elsewhere. You won't be charging around killing scores of enemies within minutes either (but you will kill enough to satisfy your trigger finger!). The utter authenticity and feels-like-you're-there atmosphere is absolutely amazing, as is some of the blood and gore one might witness in combat (during certain chapters of the game). But even when you see some of your comrades simply lying still and dead on the ground ahead of you, this game really makes you feel for them -- along with somewhat better understanding the waste of human life that occurs during war. A great game indeed!
