Excellent Game Play; Pathetic Interface

If you like Tetris, you will like this new version.
First the good stuff:
The multiplayer option for up to four friends is excellent, if you can get four people together who like to play. There are two new game modes which make the game more fun. On top of the classic get as many lines as possible, you have a race to a certain number of lines and most lines in a set amount of time. Stats are kept historically for each player, another plus, although I haven't figured out the inane way it ranks players.
There's new ways of getting additional lines. You are able to form a 4X4 large box out of 4 pieces. Forming a box with the same piece yields a gold box and high bonus, forming it out of different pieces yields a silver box and less bonus. Excellent idea.
Now the downside:
Playing alone gets old quickly. The computer AI is pitiful at best. I EASILY mastered beating the computer at the highest level in all three different games. In fact I have yet to lose to the computer.
Probably the most annoying thing about this game is the pathetic interface. First the controller. The controls are preset, and unchangeable. You push left and right to move the piece, down to speed it up, and up to force it down immediately. This leads to obvious problems where the piece is suddenly at the bottom when you meant to move it to the right or left. It boggles my mind that as many buttons are on the controller, and as far as gaming has come, that the idiots who wrote this game couldn't allow you to change the control settings. Second, the game start. When a game ends, you lose all your game settings. For example, when I play with another person we have to select our account and what game we want to play AFTER EACH GAME! There's no memory of what we did before. It's almost as if the morons who wrote the game NEVER PLAYED IT!
All in all, I like the game, and will get over the flaws. I may have to buy more joypads and disable the 'UP' direction :)
Great, but only with friends . . .

This version of Tetris features a four-player head-to-head mode, which makes it great for parties. When you play, each line every player breaks counts towards revealing the "wonders of the world," 3d fly-throughs of the great accomplishments of civilization. Oh, and the winning player gets credit for everyone else's lines, so there's some incentive to win.
In single-player mode, it's just Tetris. Couple of different modes of gameplay, but Tetris nonetheless. If you enjoy the game you won't enjoy it more or less in this incarnation. It's the head-to-head that'll keep you and your buddies up all night.
I don't know what planet the Amazon reviewer hails from, but the music on this is *terrible.* It's all herky-jerky techno, obnoxious and intrusive. We always turn the music off when we play.
Awesome and addictive.

This game is sooooo great! While I didn't quite understand the point of the temple animation scenes, the game itself is true to the very addictive classic.
Tetris at it's best.

I do not own this game but my frind does and she let me borrow it. As soon as I started playing it I was addicted, and it wasn't just the game itself that had me hooked. The game has different settings like ancient Rome or Egypt or Japan and has lots of exoctic-sounding music that at the same time has a techno sound. Although the basic play is still the same there are some changes. You can see up to four future pieces and can put pieces on hold or switch pieces in play with those on hold. You can also create gold and silver blocks which each creates a higher line value for each line. (If you create a line with the gold, that line will have a value of 25 lines) There is also a new objective for creating lines; when you have earned a certain number of lines, a wonder is created. One is Mayan, one is Japanese, one is Egyptian, one is Russian and there are many more. You can also play marathon, where you just keep building lines, you can play sprint, where you create as many lines as you can in three minutes, or you can play ultra, where you play until you reach 150 lines. You can also have multi-player play and challenge the computer or up to three of your friends. Also, you achieve rank by the number of lines you create each minute. If you like the original tetris at all I can almost guarantee you will love this new version. But I highly suggest you play it late at night, for some reason fatigue seemed to increase my friend's and my skill. (?) Hope that helped! *^_^*
The best version of Tetris!

I love this game so much. It really added some new life into the world's favorite puzzler. I love that you can now swap a block you don't like. The graphics and sound to this day are still beautiful. I unlocked many of the backgrounds not all. I wish there was a cheat to see all the backgrounds, because some of us don't have the extra free time to get 500,000 line!
Tons of Fun but...

I bought this game about a year ago. My Dad and I finaly got the 500,000 rows necessary to complete all the wonders. The win sequence is kinda cheesy, and I was hoping it would give you the option of resetting the wonders, so you could start over, but it didn't, so I stopped playing. With no more goals to attain what's the point. I suppose you could set your own goal, cus it still counts all the lines, but I liked having a pre-set goal.
Also, the game is extremely sensitive to controller movement. So much so, that I took the controller apart(don't do this, it voids the warrenty) and disabled the up button. FYI, the up button makes the pieces drop like rocks. After that we had no more problems with the game "cheating".
And the music is bad. I turned it off after the first 100 or so lines, cus I just couldn't stand it.
But I really enjoyed playing and am hoping to get a new copy of the New Tetris, if I can find one, so I can start over.
WOW

This game was very fun until I found out the game's hidden RATED M secrets. If you unlock the Greek level look closely at the trees. What do you see? A naked man's body. It is not an error in the game. It looks like they planned it. First nudity, now what? DRUGS! The music called HALLUCI stands for HALLUCINATE. If you type the name HALLUCI in as your name and pick the music HALLUCI, it will take you on a virtual drug trip.[also known as kaleidoscope] Do not buy for children.

I am a huge, huge fan of Tetris and it's my all time favorite puzzle game ever made, even more than Meteos for the DS or Lumines for the PSP!! I just totally love Tetris and especially The New Tetris which is ultimately my favorite version of Tetris! My mother actually was the one who got me into this addicting puzzle game. Back in the 80's, my mother used to sit on her computer for hours on end playing the computer version of Tetris and it was color and then I really started liking it so I played it a lot. So for the longest time, my mother and I played for hours on end. Then when we got the NES in the late 80's, I got the Tetris game for the NES and played almost everyday, it was just so cool. Then my brother got the Gameboy and of course, he had the Tetris game on that so I played that version as well. I really have tried almost every single Tetris game ever made like Magical Tetris for the N64, another Tetris for SNES, a Tetris for the PlayStation and even Tetris Worlds for Gamecube but no Tetris has ever entertained or thrilled me like the N64's The New Tetris!!
The New Tetris is so unique and has so many things that no other Tetris game has. The coolest thing about this version is you build seven wonders of the world. At first when you play, it doesn't show which wonder it is, just the name of the Country. There's Africa and six other countries but you have to actually finish the wonder before you get to see exactly what it is. One cool thing about this is that after so many lines you do, when you finish a certain game, it will show how many lines needed and actually show part of the wonder but not a part of the final product, just a part that looks like building blocks until it's all finished. Once it's finished, the wonder looks much more realistic.
Another really cool feature in this Tetris is the shadow. The shadow or ghost feature lets you see where a piece will be and what it will look like before you actually drop a Tetris piece. It's so convenient that now I'm spoiled and hate not having the shadow when I play other versions of Tetris. The music and backgrounds are really awesome also. There are also sounds of a bird during one piece of music that just sounds so cool and makes me feel like I'm somewhere in the wild whenever I hear it. After each wonder is completed, you'll get a new background and music added to what you already had. For example, when you complete the first wonder and you start the second, you'll see a new background a hear new music but then the following game could have the original you started with and it will become random. Like on the third wonder, you'll get to hear 3 different kinds of music and see three different backgrounds randomly. I love it!
Something else that is really unique is in this Tetris, they use hold pieces. I LOVE this feature!!! I just totally love being able to swap out a piece that I don't need for a piece that I could actually use. It is so convenient!!! When you are making lines and you are able to get four square blocks and you put them together, something magical happens: you have just created a mono-square and the entire block turnes to gold!! Mono Squares are really cool because it multiplies the lines you get when you clear all four rows that contain the mono-square. Now, Mono-Squares are only created when you get four of the same kind of block. Like you can get four of those straight pieces, just four of one kind it will turn gold! You also get more lines when you create Multi-Squares. Multi-Squares are almost like Mono-Squares only when you make a Multi-Square, you don't use four of the same block. It will have to be a perfect square but you can use two of the square blocks and one straight piece on one side and one straight piece on the other side and now you've created a Multi-Square and this kind turns silver. There are so many combinations.
Something that you can do in this game that I have done once but not been able to do since that is really cool but I've seen a friend do it plenty of times is a Spin Move. Spin Moves are really cool but it takes an exact timing to do it. Spin Moves are used for filling in gaps blocked by other pieces. But I saw a friend do it a bunch of times and almost every time he did it, almost every row would just be gone. He got a lot of lines cleared. If you are able to get the instruction manual, it tells exactly how to do a spin move but in case you aren't able to get the instruction manual, I'll post it here:
You let the piece fall where you want it to go, but let it fall like you are just going to let it fall in that gap where you want it to go and let one part of the piece fall into the gap. Before the piece has a chance to settle or mold together, hit either the A or B button and it will move so that the piece is perfectly in place. It might take some practice. My problem is I keep forgetting which direction the A and B button turns the pieces but I'll get better at it one day.
There are four different modes in The New Tetris: Marathon, Sprint, Ultra, and Multiplayer. Marathon, my favorite mode of all time, lets you just keep making lines until you reach the top and depending on how many lines you clear and how much time it took you, you will get a rank between 1 and 30. Sprint is a timed game. You will only have three minutes to get as many lines as possible. This is my least favorite because it just wastes time if you are trying to get the wonders completed fast but everyone should try it at least once. Ultra is pretty cool, you have to see how quickly you can clear 150 lines.
I've played Multiplayer many times with friends and features three different ways to play multiplayer: Hot Potato Garbage, Directed Garbage, and regular that is almost like Hot Potato Garbage only you can choose to turn off the garbage feature. The way I've mostly played multiplayer is with one other person with the Garbage turned on sometimes and other times, just the normal way without the garbage. Hot Potato Garbage is really unique because whenever a player cleares a line, that "garbage" will be dumped on the other players side, making it even harder for the other player. When you have three or four players, with four being the most players you can have, you have the option of using Directed Garbage Mode which lets you choose which player gets the garbage. I have never had the chance to play this mode because I've never played with three or four people. But it sounds fun.
So I highly recommend getting The New Tetris for the N64 because it is just so fun and unique. I really love it more than any other Tetris, even today, six or seven years after it's release!! Get it today, you won't regret it!!
An updated version of a really fun game.

The New Tetris builds upon the simple foundation of the original game and adds some fun twists like: multi-player action, the ability to create special cubes with the pieces to receive extra points, and the funky music are a few examples. If you liked the original Tetris, this one is even more enjoyable.
