A refreshing new twist on Tetris

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 38 / 40

The New Tetris certainly lives up to its name, providing a new play strategy where the key to a high score lies in forming 4x4 blocks out of the normal Tetris pieces, while still completing lines as you did in the original. (See the screenshots for an illustration of one of these 4x4 blocks forming.) To make this task more managable, there is also a 'hold' piece that can be swapped in place of your current piece at will. The game is balanced so that you can play it old-school style just fine (even in multiplayer), but you will acquire lines and advance levels much faster attempting to build the new 4x4 blocks.

Mutiplayer is a blast, with up to 4 players and several game options. The music is absolutely awesome. The only serious flaw with the game is the lack of a challenging computer opponent.

For casual gamers looking for a fun game to play alone or with friends, this is an excellent choice. For Tetris fans, this is a must-have!

Awesome and addictive.

This game is sooooo great! While I didn't quite understand the point of the temple animation scenes, the game itself is true to the very addictive classic.

An addictive game for the Tetris Fan!

If you are a Tetris fan, this game is for you!

It'll keep you occupied for hours trying to get a higher/quicker score! It has many improvements on the "old" Tetris games from the original Ninetendo and PC versions. There are more music options than before and more options for versions and the number of players.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

An amazingly addictive fun-fest

Tetris is a classic, and so many versions of it have been made that this may just seem like one more, but be warned, this is the SINGLE BEST VERSION OF TETRIS SINCE THE ORIGINAL. Finally someone has improved on Tetris, and presented it in a decent format, the graphics are as good as you could possible want them, and the backgrounds are very nicely rendered. (Greece is my favorite, with the rain) The new features are a mixed bag. At first I didn't like the shadow piece, but it grows on you and becomes a useful tool, cube building is great fun, and the L-button switch-a-ma-jig was a wonderful idea. The star of this game is the Multiplayer, however. You would have never though Tetris could get so fast, fun, and furious! A Great game, if your a Tetris fan, or if you want a great Multiplayer game.

The New Tetris or an addiction waiting to happen.

I started playing a year ago (mainly because a bunch of my friends were playing) but stopped after about a month. We would only play multiplayer mode with garbage. This was fun for a while but it got old and the garbage become more annoying as you got better. This is because to build gold and silver blocks you needed to stack up the sides. Garbage made this extremely difficult to do so I pretty much stopped playing.

In the past couple of months I started playing again when I noticed my friends were addicted to single player sprint mode. You have 3 minutes to get the highest score. They were getting scores in the 500s which immediately stirred my competitive juices. I was lucky to get over 100. After a couple of months of playing my best score is now 659. I know only one other guy who has done better, he reaching 706.

Showing three blocks ahead of time and having one reserve piece was pure genuis. Without these two features it would be almost impossible to consistently build blocks. These added features created a deeply addictive game where you try to build gold and silver blocks on both sides of the screen.

If you have some free time on your hands and enjoy competitive games similar to Tetris this is a must buy.

Note about game sensitivity: The game is very sensitive to keypad movement. Old controllers will be a problem. I went out and bought a new controller and have had no problems since.

A game that messes with your mind

I really enjoy this game....er...ONLY when I can actually get a hold of the N64, which may I remind you is almost impossible with my mother around. I don't own the game, but we rent it as much as possible considering that we can't find it anywhere in this town. The graphics are great, and the music really gets me going....

God, I love this game!

This is the main reaon I'm gonna buy a N64(and GoldenEye). Yes, I own a PS2 and a XBOX but this is one of my favorite games of all time. One downside though, it's extremely addictive. Like crack even. Well, maybe not crack but pretty addictive.

Great, but only with friends . . .

This version of Tetris features a four-player head-to-head mode, which makes it great for parties. When you play, each line every player breaks counts towards revealing the "wonders of the world," 3d fly-throughs of the great accomplishments of civilization. Oh, and the winning player gets credit for everyone else's lines, so there's some incentive to win.

In single-player mode, it's just Tetris. Couple of different modes of gameplay, but Tetris nonetheless. If you enjoy the game you won't enjoy it more or less in this incarnation. It's the head-to-head that'll keep you and your buddies up all night.

I don't know what planet the Amazon reviewer hails from, but the music on this is *terrible.* It's all herky-jerky techno, obnoxious and intrusive. We always turn the music off when we play.

Tetris at it's best.

I do not own this game but my frind does and she let me borrow it. As soon as I started playing it I was addicted, and it wasn't just the game itself that had me hooked. The game has different settings like ancient Rome or Egypt or Japan and has lots of exoctic-sounding music that at the same time has a techno sound. Although the basic play is still the same there are some changes. You can see up to four future pieces and can put pieces on hold or switch pieces in play with those on hold. You can also create gold and silver blocks which each creates a higher line value for each line. (If you create a line with the gold, that line will have a value of 25 lines) There is also a new objective for creating lines; when you have earned a certain number of lines, a wonder is created. One is Mayan, one is Japanese, one is Egyptian, one is Russian and there are many more. You can also play marathon, where you just keep building lines, you can play sprint, where you create as many lines as you can in three minutes, or you can play ultra, where you play until you reach 150 lines. You can also have multi-player play and challenge the computer or up to three of your friends. Also, you achieve rank by the number of lines you create each minute. If you like the original tetris at all I can almost guarantee you will love this new version. But I highly suggest you play it late at night, for some reason fatigue seemed to increase my friend's and my skill. (?) Hope that helped! *^_^*
