A refreshing new twist on Tetris

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 38 / 40

The New Tetris certainly lives up to its name, providing a new play strategy where the key to a high score lies in forming 4x4 blocks out of the normal Tetris pieces, while still completing lines as you did in the original. (See the screenshots for an illustration of one of these 4x4 blocks forming.) To make this task more managable, there is also a 'hold' piece that can be swapped in place of your current piece at will. The game is balanced so that you can play it old-school style just fine (even in multiplayer), but you will acquire lines and advance levels much faster attempting to build the new 4x4 blocks.

Mutiplayer is a blast, with up to 4 players and several game options. The music is absolutely awesome. The only serious flaw with the game is the lack of a challenging computer opponent.

For casual gamers looking for a fun game to play alone or with friends, this is an excellent choice. For Tetris fans, this is a must-have!

An addictive game for the Tetris Fan!

If you are a Tetris fan, this game is for you!

It'll keep you occupied for hours trying to get a higher/quicker score! It has many improvements on the "old" Tetris games from the original Ninetendo and PC versions. There are more music options than before and more options for versions and the number of players.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

good tetris game for a console

I picked up "the new tetris" because it featured my favorate game variaton from the excellant Tetris Worlds for Game boy Advance, only this version doesn't cut off at level 15. You can play for as long as you can. The tetris game on this package is pretty much the same as the classic version, but you only get one point for each normal line cleared, but it is still a pretty good scoring system. another good thing this game features is that it tracks how long you managed to stretch a game. I've been able to stretch some games for over an hour. thats because there are a few frills added to this game that make it more interesting
one, you can take 4 identical or differant tetroids and weave them together to form a solid 4x4 square and get bonuses when you clear a line containg a portion of the square. 2, you can use the "T" shape peice to rotate into a tight place and cause all blocks to seperate and collapse. This gets you out of a tough situation, and the lines you clear during the collapse count towards your line total, however, it also cancles out any remaining bonus square sections. even after you've unlocked all the wonders, you can still get good entertainment from this game with the multiplayer. the only thing I have a problem with is the music. it's just mindless techno-music in the style of what ever world your playing in, and this game is LOUD. you always have to turn your television set down when you play this game. it would be nice if they could of put in a recording of "the dance of the suger plum fairy" (which, if you've read my review for Tetris worlds, you know is my favorite tetris song) on a celesta.

An amazingly addictive fun-fest

Tetris is a classic, and so many versions of it have been made that this may just seem like one more, but be warned, this is the SINGLE BEST VERSION OF TETRIS SINCE THE ORIGINAL. Finally someone has improved on Tetris, and presented it in a decent format, the graphics are as good as you could possible want them, and the backgrounds are very nicely rendered. (Greece is my favorite, with the rain) The new features are a mixed bag. At first I didn't like the shadow piece, but it grows on you and becomes a useful tool, cube building is great fun, and the L-button switch-a-ma-jig was a wonderful idea. The star of this game is the Multiplayer, however. You would have never though Tetris could get so fast, fun, and furious! A Great game, if your a Tetris fan, or if you want a great Multiplayer game.

The New Tetris or an addiction waiting to happen.

One of the few games worth the money

The New Tetris is the best one I've seen since the original. The graphics and backgrounds are excellent. The L-Button/swap thing is a great idea as well as block-forming, cause I always used to try to do it. They kept the original blocks and added something called "Wonders" which I never understood. The only drawbacks to this game is the shadowing of the piece so you can see where it lands, and when the piece seems to drop in the wrong place. I hardly buy N64 games because of the price, but this is one that I think is worth it.

One Word: Addictive

I started playing a year ago (mainly because a bunch of my friends were playing) but stopped after about a month. We would only play multiplayer mode with garbage. This was fun for a while but it got old and the garbage become more annoying as you got better. This is because to build gold and silver blocks you needed to stack up the sides. Garbage made this extremely difficult to do so I pretty much stopped playing.

In the past couple of months I started playing again when I noticed my friends were addicted to single player sprint mode. You have 3 minutes to get the highest score. They were getting scores in the 500s which immediately stirred my competitive juices. I was lucky to get over 100. After a couple of months of playing my best score is now 659. I know only one other guy who has done better, he reaching 706.

Showing three blocks ahead of time and having one reserve piece was pure genuis. Without these two features it would be almost impossible to consistently build blocks. These added features created a deeply addictive game where you try to build gold and silver blocks on both sides of the screen.

If you have some free time on your hands and enjoy competitive games similar to Tetris this is a must buy.

Note about game sensitivity: The game is very sensitive to keypad movement. Old controllers will be a problem. I went out and bought a new controller and have had no problems since.

God, I love this game!

This is the main reaon I'm gonna buy a N64(and GoldenEye). Yes, I own a PS2 and a XBOX but this is one of my favorite games of all time. One downside though, it's extremely addictive. Like crack even. Well, maybe not crack but pretty addictive.

Rent this one first

This is packaged well, and that's about where the excitement ends. This game had tremendous potential, but it didn't deliver. There's an annoying screen that forces you to reenter your name after every multiplayer match, which is about 2 lines of code to correct, but the programmers let it go. There's also this stupid shadow piece that shows you where your piece can go, but no way to turn it off. The game is also very sensitive to the controller, which usually causes a piece to drop somewhere bad. Oh yeah, when you pause it the game board disappears, thus thwarting your plans to see where things might go. I loved the original, but this one is just not as good. I think this game ranks a 2 on the fun factor, but someone needed to bring down the average and make the rating not so fantastical.

A game that messes with your mind

I really enjoy this game....er...ONLY when I can actually get a hold of the N64, which may I remind you is almost impossible with my mother around. I don't own the game, but we rent it as much as possible considering that we can't find it anywhere in this town. The graphics are great, and the music really gets me going....
