This is packaged well, and that's about where the excitement ends. This game had tremendous potential, but it didn't deliver. There's an annoying screen that forces you to reenter your name after every multiplayer match, which is about 2 lines of code to correct, but the programmers let it go. There's also this stupid shadow piece that shows you where your piece can go, but no way to turn it off. The game is also very sensitive to the controller, which usually causes a piece to drop somewhere bad. Oh yeah, when you pause it the game board disappears, thus thwarting your plans to see where things might go. I loved the original, but this one is just not as good. I think this game ranks a 2 on the fun factor, but someone needed to bring down the average and make the rating not so fantastical.

This game was very fun until I found out the game's hidden RATED M secrets. If you unlock the Greek level look closely at the trees. What do you see? A naked man's body. It is not an error in the game. It looks like they planned it. First nudity, now what? DRUGS! The music called HALLUCI stands for HALLUCINATE. If you type the name HALLUCI in as your name and pick the music HALLUCI, it will take you on a virtual drug trip.[also known as kaleidoscope] Do not buy for children.

To me this game gets very frustrating. This is when the blocks will jump somewhere else when I'm trying to put them in place. At first I thought it might be me that was doing it, but it happens too often, and seems to happen at critical times. Needless to say I don't plan this game too often.

Excellent Game Play; Pathetic Interface

If you like Tetris, you will like this new version.

First the good stuff:
The multiplayer option for up to four friends is excellent, if you can get four people together who like to play. There are two new game modes which make the game more fun. On top of the classic get as many lines as possible, you have a race to a certain number of lines and most lines in a set amount of time. Stats are kept historically for each player, another plus, although I haven't figured out the inane way it ranks players.
There's new ways of getting additional lines. You are able to form a 4X4 large box out of 4 pieces. Forming a box with the same piece yields a gold box and high bonus, forming it out of different pieces yields a silver box and less bonus. Excellent idea.

Now the downside:
Playing alone gets old quickly. The computer AI is pitiful at best. I EASILY mastered beating the computer at the highest level in all three different games. In fact I have yet to lose to the computer.
Probably the most annoying thing about this game is the pathetic interface. First the controller. The controls are preset, and unchangeable. You push left and right to move the piece, down to speed it up, and up to force it down immediately. This leads to obvious problems where the piece is suddenly at the bottom when you meant to move it to the right or left. It boggles my mind that as many buttons are on the controller, and as far as gaming has come, that the idiots who wrote this game couldn't allow you to change the control settings. Second, the game start. When a game ends, you lose all your game settings. For example, when I play with another person we have to select our account and what game we want to play AFTER EACH GAME! There's no memory of what we did before. It's almost as if the morons who wrote the game NEVER PLAYED IT!

All in all, I like the game, and will get over the flaws. I may have to buy more joypads and disable the 'UP' direction :)

good tetris game for a console

I picked up "the new tetris" because it featured my favorate game variaton from the excellant Tetris Worlds for Game boy Advance, only this version doesn't cut off at level 15. You can play for as long as you can. The tetris game on this package is pretty much the same as the classic version, but you only get one point for each normal line cleared, but it is still a pretty good scoring system. another good thing this game features is that it tracks how long you managed to stretch a game. I've been able to stretch some games for over an hour. thats because there are a few frills added to this game that make it more interesting
one, you can take 4 identical or differant tetroids and weave them together to form a solid 4x4 square and get bonuses when you clear a line containg a portion of the square. 2, you can use the "T" shape peice to rotate into a tight place and cause all blocks to seperate and collapse. This gets you out of a tough situation, and the lines you clear during the collapse count towards your line total, however, it also cancles out any remaining bonus square sections. even after you've unlocked all the wonders, you can still get good entertainment from this game with the multiplayer. the only thing I have a problem with is the music. it's just mindless techno-music in the style of what ever world your playing in, and this game is LOUD. you always have to turn your television set down when you play this game. it would be nice if they could of put in a recording of "the dance of the suger plum fairy" (which, if you've read my review for Tetris worlds, you know is my favorite tetris song) on a celesta.

One of the few games worth the money

The New Tetris is the best one I've seen since the original. The graphics and backgrounds are excellent. The L-Button/swap thing is a great idea as well as block-forming, cause I always used to try to do it. They kept the original blocks and added something called "Wonders" which I never understood. The only drawbacks to this game is the shadowing of the piece so you can see where it lands, and when the piece seems to drop in the wrong place. I hardly buy N64 games because of the price, but this is one that I think is worth it.

An updated version of a really fun game.

The New Tetris builds upon the simple foundation of the original game and adds some fun twists like: multi-player action, the ability to create special cubes with the pieces to receive extra points, and the funky music are a few examples. If you liked the original Tetris, this one is even more enjoyable.

A refreshing new twist on Tetris

The New Tetris certainly lives up to its name, providing a new play strategy where the key to a high score lies in forming 4x4 blocks out of the normal Tetris pieces, while still completing lines as you did in the original. (See the screenshots for an illustration of one of these 4x4 blocks forming.) To make this task more managable, there is also a 'hold' piece that can be swapped in place of your current piece at will. The game is balanced so that you can play it old-school style just fine (even in multiplayer), but you will acquire lines and advance levels much faster attempting to build the new 4x4 blocks.

Mutiplayer is a blast, with up to 4 players and several game options. The music is absolutely awesome. The only serious flaw with the game is the lack of a challenging computer opponent.

For casual gamers looking for a fun game to play alone or with friends, this is an excellent choice. For Tetris fans, this is a must-have!

Awesome and addictive.

This game is sooooo great! While I didn't quite understand the point of the temple animation scenes, the game itself is true to the very addictive classic.

An addictive game for the Tetris Fan!

If you are a Tetris fan, this game is for you!

It'll keep you occupied for hours trying to get a higher/quicker score! It has many improvements on the "old" Tetris games from the original Ninetendo and PC versions. There are more music options than before and more options for versions and the number of players.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
