Game of The Year

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 5 / 8

I'd like to start off saying that I'm a HUGE fan of the Battlefield series and this game takes it to the next level.

First off, the graphics--WOW. The textures, shadowing, lighting, and weapons all look so real. Also, the explosions look phenonominal. It's amazing when gunfire hails all around and explosions everywhere, it's really great.

The sound is--as always--fantastic. The gunfire, explosions, vehicles driving, everything. It sounds amazing when buildings are being assualted by Harrier jets and Artillary. The sound effects really immerse you into the entire game. The music, is...erm...OKAY. The menu music is okay, but not as good as the original.

Gameplay wise, this is where the game really shines. All the weapon kits are equally balenced and not overpowering. My favorite kit is Spec Ops. But, anyway, the gameplay rocks. There are snipers nested ontop of beautiful mountains and urban enviremonts, waiting for prey. Anti-tanks prowl the streets, searching for any sign of vehcles. There are over 30 vehicles in the game and handle brillaintly. The jets are the best in my opinion. There's honestly nothing like speeding through the skys in a jet and ejecting out and parachuting to the enemy's base with a machine gun, tearing them apart. Everything is well balenced, which is needed.

The multy-player has been greatly improved. 64 players splitting into 6 squads of deadly soldiers trained to dish out death. As the commander of each squad, you can deal out orders and use artialrry strikes. You can also tell your squad to attack and defend postitions to your will.

All in all, this game re-defines the genere once more. The graphics were improved, the gameplay better, and the sound beefed up. I think this game is definately a candidate for Game of the Year. Everything is executed brillaintly, start to finish. The specs are steep, but it's DEFINATELY worth it. I give this game mu higest reccomendation with a 5 out of 5.

You will LOVE OPENING and CLOSING the BOX !

I say this because if you are like 80-90% of the people who bought this game and could not run it on their own state-of-the-art systems, that's about all you'll be doing with this game.

Even if you buy it thinking your system requirements are close enough, like I did, you will enter a lottery to determine if your video card is one of the mere TEN cards it supports. Again, not ten brands of cards, but TEN cards themselves.

I was severely disappointed with EA. I have been buying EA games with trust AND confidence since the company first opened its doors. After this disaster, I will never buy another EA game as long as I breathe. As I look at the specs on the box right now, it makes no mention that it only supports 10 cards. You do not find this out until you break the seal, thus rendering the game unreturnable to the store.

At any rate, there is no reason you need to pay full retail prices for this game to give the game a shot despite all the specification warnings you will be reading. Go to any of the known auction websites, even here at Amazon, and you will see hundreds of these games for sale by users who could only open and close the box the game comes in.

I am hardpressed to recommend a game that very, very few gamers can play whether it be online or offline. Send EA a message. Pass on this game and others that turn up their nose at the general gaming public.

I feel your pain Jose. I pre-ordered the game which was to include a free headset....got the package yesterday, and inside the BF2 box was just the head set, no damn cd's. Now i gotta return the friggin thing, and not get the head set. bang up job amazon...the 1 star is for them, not the game...i'm sure it rocks. will not pre-order through these gimps again.

Battlefield 2 is a very fun game, and is worth the money. First I'll start with the possitives. The graphics are teh best I've ever seen, the sound is incredible, and the maps are really great. On the negitive, BF2 requires a pretty up-to-date system to run on, and it has a lot of bugs. The new teamkill-punnishing system really suckes. Sure, it does a great job stoping teamkillers, but it hurts non teamkillers even more. Clanmores and landmines are clearly maked for your team, but you some reason some people don't "know" there there. Also, people like to stand around and wait for jets. When someone get one, everyone else jumps out in front so the person is folrced to teamkill them. Then, they get punished. THe only other bad thing it that EA doesn't listen to the community when we report bugs and make suggestions, and don't ever read the forums.

The best game I've ever played.

If you like FPS (first person shooter) games - this is perhaps the best multiplayer game ever made. The game provides you with the flexibility to choose whether you want to fight in the air, in a ground vehicle such as a tank or as one of several types of infantry soldiers. Therefore you can choose your own style: do you want to be a quiet and patient sniper waiting for the enemy to come into view? Do you want to go hunt tanks? Do you want to be a team player and support your squad/teamates by healing them or supplying them with ammo?

Pros:
- graphics and sound are superb
- gameplay is balanced
- VOIP feature allows those with headsets to speak with squad members

Cons:
- may require an above average computer system
- minor bugs and gameplay annoyances that are common in newly released games - however EA games is constantly working on bug-fixing and game enhancements via periodic patches

Not a solitary game

The graphics in this game are very impressive yes, as is the interface. I love being able to run buy double tapping forward. But the have left out game play for lan parties. I loved the original in Coopertive mode. 2 to 6 players could be involved in a great game, now you are limited to only online play with no bots availible in multiplayer (although there are bots in single player the single player mode is quite restricted). They teased you with a pull down menu for game play mode that contains only one type (conquest). If you are an avid online game player you will love this game. If you enjoy small lan parties your best bet is not to buy this game untill they patch it.

GREAT Game

ToeTag's review is WRONG. 300MB is not 3GB. The latest patch is exactly 280MB. I'm on an Athlon 64 3500, 1GB RAM, 6800GT card. Runs like a charm on all high settings.

The gameplay is great, a lot of teamwork is involved. BF2 is a huge step up from the classical BF1942. In short, get it. It's a great game and will run well on any new mid-high end system.

Great game, but high sys requirements.

This game is awesome. In how many other games can you ride a tank, fly a plane, parahute into a chopper, jump over dunes in a buggy, and play as an infantry? The game play is excellent. You can create or join squads. Or you can command the entire team, by being a commander. I have a fairly decent computer (2.53 ghz P4, 1 Gig or ram, a Radeon 9600xt, and a 80 Gb 5400 RPM HD). I run on all medium, with very little or no lag. Most of the other people who can't run this game, either have an old video card, or a cheap one. This game has a lot of textures, and HUGE maps. That's why it takes a lot of power to run this game.

Overall, this game is very good. It has a few bugs, which I haven't encountered on a daily basis. Also, this game attracts whiners like light attracts insects.

Count on the Swedes to screw up a five star game

This game is loads of fun, but make sure you have the necessary hardware to handle it, and make sure you install the patches in proper order. I have vanilla BF2 and installed the incremental patches, and have had no problems outside of the numerous well-known bugs. I've been lucky because I've never had to reinstall the game and patches, like many others have.

FUN FACTOR: If you can get this game running smoothly on your system (good luck), you'll be able to enjoy one of the best online multiplayer of all time, from EA. There is plenty to do, plenty of variation, plenty of roles, and yet the controls are fairly straightforward. As an action / strategy game, this game has something for everyone. You can be a lone-wolf taking out enemies from a distance, or join a squad and help your team capture a flag, revive your injured teammate as a medic, or be a commander and lead your men from a command and control screen, and much more. There is also a ranking system, which makes the game even more fun. In the ranking system you can earn badges, ribbons, and promotions in rank based on how good you're getting at the game. There is no monthly fee for online play.

SUPPORT: Dice Sweden, which is responsible for supporting this game, SUCKS. They have released a series of patches, most of which have introduced new problems, not fixed old critical ones, and introduced new unwanted features. Not only that, the patch installation process itself can also cause problems in the game!

So I give EA five stars for fun, Dice Sweden 2 stars for incompetence.

Great game IF you have an AGP Graphics Card & decent comp

The game is great, lotta fun, good graphics and everything (more on gameplay near bottom) IF (yes this is an important if) you have an AGP Graphics Card & your computer meets the specification requirements.

You may have seen several 1-star ratings of this game regarding stability issues (such as constant crashing, unable to play), and i think i know the cause - they do not have an AGP Graphics Card.

Here's my story: My computer initially ran this game fine with a Radeon 9800 Pro Graphics Card (2.8 GHZ processor, 1 gig of RAM).

Then the Radeon just died, so i bought a new card, a PCI Graphics card by Diamond using the Radeon 9250 build.

The game would constantly crash at startup, wasn't able to even get in to play.

I tried every gol-darn tech support forum i could, tons of attempts to fix it from the software angle, nothing.

Finally, i called Diamond, the manufacturer of the Graphics card.

They informed me that their, if not all, PCI Graphics Cards will not work with Battlefield 2!

I returned the PCI Card, replaced it with an AGP card of similar speccs, also manufactured by Diamond.

Soon as the new card was in, drivers were installed, wham BF2 was playing perfectly fine.

So, make sure you've got the proper type of Grahipcs Card in your system, as even a good system with wrong type of Card will not run the game.

As far as gameplay, it's very complex and engaging. You can pick from multiple classes such as a Sniper, Medic, or Engineer to play (one at a time of course), each of which has its specific purpose, pros and cons.

There is a ranking system, which u can climb by performing well, which allows the "unlocking" of upgrade weapons for the various classes.

There are ground vehicles such as Tanks and Armored Personnel Carriers (apcs for short), Aircraft (Jets of many makes and models, transport helicopters and Combat Choppers), anti-air and ground-defense missile turrets one can man to try and counter them.

There are squads you can form to coordinate your team, with Squad Leaders commanding them, and an overall Commander of the battlefield who can use satellite scans, Unmanned Airial Vehicle (uav for short) overflights, and Artillery (arty in brief) to benefit their team. There are emplacements on the field of engagement that are associated with each of these Commander abilities, all of which can be destroyed - disabling that team's commander from using them!

In the game, the goal is generally to reduce the enemy's "tickets" to 0. Tickets are that team's # of respawns remaining. A respawn is what happens after you die - 15 seconds on most servers - you "respawn" or revive at the location of your choice that is currently available, such as a flag your team holds or your Squad Leader.

In the proccess of reducing enemy Tickets, you must hold "flags". Each flag represents a spot where your team can spawn players. Thus, if you, say, had only one flag, everyone on that team would be limited to spawning at that location, thus making for a prime artillery strike from the opposing commander. And, with no flags, it's pretty much gg (short for "good game", a polite thing to say at the end of a round).

I could go on, but suffice to say, this is an excellant shooter, and i'd highly reccomend it.

Only real downside is that the current patch (1.3) is just a wee bit unstable and the game occasionally crashs (it's just the code of the game, nothing to be done really). This is rather uncommon however, and patch 1.4 is on the way soon.

A few xtra notes - you can configure a Joystick for the game, and i would reccomend you buy one without question if you plan to be an aviator in-game. Be sure to set the sensitivity high tho (i wondered why i turned soooo sloooowww in aircraft for ages till i fixed this).

Also, check out the message boards for the game on EA's official website. Lot of good info there including how to disable the startup movies (which one gets tired of seeing rather quickly and can't be 100% skipped).

Be sure you just use the "Play Battlefield 2" option to startup game, NOT "Play Battlefield 2 Online Now!". The reason for this is that the online now option searches for a server every time you login to your account, which makes it take ages to load, and most ppl will choose certain "favorite" servers they play on most of the time.

Hope this was helpfull :).
