SafeDisc Makes Mech Commander Safe-- from the Player!

I would like to be able to write a review for Mech Commander 2, but I am unable to play this game on any computer in my house. It seems that Microsoft has chosen to add a copy-protect program-- "SafeDisc"-- to render the CD-ROM incompatible with every single drive I have. A readme file included with Mech Commander warns the user of this problem, when it is too late.

Unfortunately, Microsoft neither includes a warning on the box, nor posts a list of incompatible drives on the Web-- as of this writing. Those who have not yet purchased Mech Commander 2 should be aware that, among many other drives, the CD-ROM fails with the following: Sony CDU5211, Sony CDU77E, Acer CD-624a, Memorex CD-RW2224, Plextor CD-ROM PX-32TS (SCSI), Sanyo CRD-256P, and the Yamaha 2216E, 4416SX, and CDR6416S-VK. The full list is probably much longer. Microsoft does indicate that the Sony CDU77E should work if it is configured as a master drive, but all of the others listed are right out.

I am personally going to contact Mircosoft about getting a replacement disc. I suspect a patch will not arrive, since this is a hardware issue, and Microsoft obviously will not do anything to override a system they just spent money to install and distribute. It may behoove the reader to write Microsoft for a full list of incompatible drives.

The Copy protection is SO GOOD that I couldn't even play it. Microsoft has really outdone themselves this time. I think as a buyer you are mistaken for a pirate and there is no help to be found if the game is not compatible with your CD-Rom drive. So be warned, this CD may not work on your system. It's about a 50-50 chance you are taking (or worse).

When it comes to your money, don't gamble. Try another title.

Wait for the Patchs and driver updates !!!

The game arrived with such agressive copy protection that it refused to execute on my system. A long phone call to tech support resulted in a 14 day wait for a replacement disc. The replacement was a little better. It crashes and locks up the system half way through the introduction unless the sound is disabled. Another Long toll call to Washington State reveild the following information. The game is broken under Windows 2000 direct x8.1 with many older sound cards. It will not run using the native VIA sound on the MB. I pulled out my trusty Soundblaster PCI128 andhad the same problem. I replaced it again with a Soundblaster PCI512 and again had exactly the same problem. Microsoft tech support informed me that my best hope to get it running would be to buy a new Audigy sound card. I have spent hours updating all of the drivers in the system to the most recent versions and have even flashed new firmware in the the CD Drive and updated the BIOS. IF YOU BUY THIS GAME NOW YOU ARE PAYING TO BE A BETA TESTER. Wait for either a Direct X fix, a game patch or perhaps better sound drivers.

The Original was MUCH better

Having been played the original MechCommander for several years, I was eagerly anticipating the release of MC2. However, after playing the beta version of MC2, I would much rather stick to playing the first release.

MC2 uses a new 3D engine, very similar to that of Force Commander. (I beleive all the mouse controls are the same) I am somewhat of a traditionist and I really don't like 3D Strategy games. The best Strategy genre games have always been 2D (Command and Conquor, Age of Empires, etc) and the new 3D interface really does nothing special but slow down framerates. Because it's a strat game, you only really need the camera angle in one place. I could care less if I can spin the camera around my mech. The final result is a pretty much useless feature, slow framerates, and graphics that look worse than the original MechCommander.

Gameplay also seems to have taken a hit. I found I didn't have the type of control I had with my mechs that I did with MC1. It felt like I was controlling 8 tanks in Command and Conquor and once they were gone, that was it. There is also a lot more emphasis placed on arial support vehicals than mech fighting. Airstrikes, salvaging, and artillery peices seemed to be the nessicary means of fighting rather than the mechs themselves. Gameplay I found really unexciting, and I didn't really want to play much after just a few days.

The one sad thing about these newer mech games is the lack of the old familiar mechs. For starters there is only 6 or 7 clan mechs (2 or 3 of which are "new creations") and the rest are all IS mechs (several of which are also new). My favorite mechs, the loki and the awesome, are both missing in the new version.

The between game videos, interfaces, and graphics are improved over MC1, however it seems as if they spent more time on that aspect of the game, then the actual game itself. The between game mech lab takes quite a number of screens to get through and is somewhat tedious as well. One nice feature of this game is that you can save your weapons configurations, and load them up later, even in multiplayer.

In a nutshell, this game feels like a combination of MechWarrior 4 and Force Commander, both of which were not exactly adored by the public. You will probably find yourself loving this game for the first few days you play. This is only the excitement of finally seeing this long awaited title. After the initial nastalgia wears off, you will quickly realize how uneventful this game is and go back to playing the original.

Well, I was looking forward to this game a great deal because I have enjoyed the first game alot. Unfortunatly due to a bug in the Microsoft security check to make sure that the cd is in the drive, I cannot play the game at all. They give no support on their web site and there is no sign of it being fixed. Don't buy this game unless you want an expensive coaster.

Typical Microsoft Junk

This game is probably loads of fun. I just wish I could get it to run on my computer. I meet the system requirements and I can get the game to load past the menu system and that gives me a problem some times since the game doesn't seem to respond to my mouse clicks. You need to have a computer that really exceeds the listed system requirements. You will also need to download all the patches that are out for it now from microsoft to get the game to work as well. Typicaly Microsoft Junk, just like the majority of thier other programs.

Didn't even work correctly

I would say I would have possibly enjoyed this video game but the version that I received was defective. I tried to get customer service from microsoft and that was problematic. Nothing on their website was useful and then I was forced to either pay money for support or call long-distance just to receive support with the warranty. Then after I spent time getting an account setup with them they said that there had been a number of defective cd's shipped. Then he said I could either return it or they could send me a copy in 3 plus weeks. Trust me, why buy this game if it may not even work correctly!

Installed ok, but wouldn't play. Probably something to do with MS copy protection. You can bet I won't buy anymore games from MS!

Horrible Service

This game is absolutly horrible. I have a Radeon 9600 PRO and an Athlon XP 1700+ cpu, 512 RAM, and other good stuff too, and this piece of junk doesnt work. There are no game updates, no tech support from MICROSOFT!, and none of the solutions listed at microsoft tech support make it run. It installs fine, and starts to run the game and then just stops. New drivers were unable to fix it and who knows if I can return it. I give it one star becuase it looked fun and with my RADEON video card Im sure it would have looked sweet too!

... DIDNT REALISE HOW MANY GRAPHIC GLITCHES AND BUGS MICROSOFT PUT IN THIS GAME!
MECHWARRIOR 4:VENGENCE AND BLACK KNIGHT AND ALL AGE OF EMPIRE AND KINGS GAMES ROCKED BIG-TIME AND SAVED MICROSOFT FROM BEING ONE OF THE WORST COMPUTER GAME COMPANIES.
EVEN ON THE HIGHEST END COMPUTERS THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS GAME IS ...UGLY. THE ACTORS FACES MOVE SO SLOW THEY CANT EVEN KEEP UP WITH THE CHOPPY SOUND LIKE FORCE COMMANDER.
AND ONCE YOU PASS IT THEIR IS NO REPLAY VALUE WHATSOEVER(NO SKIRMISH MODE AND AN EASY BUT [bad] EDITOR!)
HOW CAN YOU PLAY A GAME THAT JERKS LIKE CRAZY(EVEN ON A PENTIUM 4)AND HAS MORE BUGS THAN THE MOVIE A BUGS LIFE.
THERE IS NOT EVEN AN OFFICIAL PATCH FOR THIS GAME BECAUSE MICROSOFT SAID IT DIDNT NEED IT AND THEIR GAME IS FINE.
