UO: R.I.P.

I'm ashamed to say that after being one of the elite few that have stuck with this game since day one, (1997), I'm canceling all connections with UO. UO started out as being one of the best games I'd ever played, and because of such I paid the monthly fee every month to keep going. I know feel, with the changes that have taken place in the past few updates and expansions, UO has cut its own throat. The game play has done nothing but go down hill. I feel that this new expansion was a far fetched and desperate attempt by OSI to recharge an already dieing world. Dont waist your time or money. Its not worth it. You'll find nothing but let downs and discouragements from a game that started out great but has definitely run its course. There is no longer any customer appreciation or support and it seems that EA has found themselves to busy to service the people that pay their bills. They'd do better to cancel the UO world than to continue trying to milk every dime they can out of the fed up players.

I have been playing UO for going on six years now and AOS has made the game fun again. This is the first and only expansion that has been worth buying. Age of Shadows is ten times better than Lord Blackthorn's Revenge and Third Dawn. If any of you play UO and have found that it has lost its luster, buy this and all of that will change.

The BEST out there

The depth of this game is just incredible. You can do virtually anything you can dream of.

Want to be a gardener and grow plants? Go ahead, some plants might mutate and produce odd offspring. Some plants will produce valuable resources.

Want to sail the oceans fending off Deep Sea Serpents? You can.

Want to be a warrior? A paladin with special holy abilities? How about an undead Necromancer who raises the creatures he slays to aid him in more mayhem?

Build your own house just the way you want it, too. Be warned, housing space is limited and very expensive. But once you get it there are no maintenance fees or such, so you can enjoy it without worry.

Want to tame dragons, you can, and can later train them to be better fighters to assist you.

Want to build weapons, armor, almost anything that's in the game can be crafted one way or another, and there is a demand for things! Run your own vendor out of your own house.

There is really so much depth and variety to this game it's really overwhelming for new players. Although you get 40 hours of near-invulnerability to learn the ropes, you can barely scratch the surface of this game in 40 hours. .. The land is massive, there are scores of monsters and challenges, oodles of guilds, guild warfare if you so choose, and lots to be done here!

I don't want to sound like an ad, but I've been having so much fun lately, especially with Paladins and the customer housing that Iit's hard not to sound like a broken record.

This game has evolved *so* much since its previous releases it's incredible. This is very different from the previous releases of the game. Items have more properties and the possibilities to customize your avatar -looks and abilities- is astrounding.

Another add-on to 1997 technology.

Another add-on to the 100.000+ fans that are still subscribers (i.e, not necessarily playing) this title, to keep them chopping lumber and having virtual escapades in a fake three-dimentional landscape with ancient graphics and sound.

Ultima Online was at one time the best MMORPG on the market, and it had the potential to be that way for many years to come, as it allowed users nearly unlimited possibilities in terms of which professions, looks and reputation they cared for. You could be a evil playerkiller that added danger to the game, or a good Paladin fighting to protect the innocent new players in the land (those that did not mouth off against you, and then got your account banned by people bordering to the 1940s German Secret Police).

But, face it people: This is 2003, it is time to play something else. Try a free subscription for Asherons Call, try Earth And BEyond, Asherons Call 2 (its like diablo - only with neat graphics - and a 13$ subscription - if you live in the region that allows you to play it), or any other more -RECENT- MMORPG.

Ultima ONline, and the company that spawned it, are dying. Save your money and buy something else. (Wheel of Time for example).

I grabbed the UO box 5 years ago before the man could get it on the shelf, and today, still after 5 years, and can still remember the look on his face, when I violently grabbed the box, from that day, I have been hooked. Now, to get some things out of the way 1, I do not spend ALL DAY AND NIGHT on the game, I work full time, have a band, and a wife, so UO is something I play about 21 hours a week (3 hours a day MAX), and with that amount of time I have made some of the best heard of Characters on UO. This new expansion has been talked about for ages, and OSI couldn't of even imagined the pre orders it got. Osi is a great place to work, and a great place to play computer games. heheh.. I was delievered the game this morning, and ONCE AGAIN the UPS man's face turned red as I grabbed the box from his hands, REFUSED to sign the paper and shut the door in his face!! After 4 hours on the game as of right now, I am as hooked as the first time I saw the game 5 years ago. But like most things, I don't think this addiction is ever going to fade, There is just to much to do. PLUS, I just want to let all you know I OFFICIALLY laid the first house down on AOS, SO HA HA HA HA HA JK.. take care guys

It's called a testing phase.

People, I've been playing this game for over a year and I don't know why I continue to put myself through this torture. The game is very addicting however, extremely frustrating because they continually make changes however, they neglect to test their changes sufficiently before they implement them. If you are thinking about playing this game, do not bother for at least another month until they have managed to work out the kinks.

Not only is this game buggy, but the customer service is virtually non-existant. If you try calling via telephone you get put on hold for hours or in my case, get hung up on. If you try to "page" a GM (online customer service person) in the game, you'll be waiting in a queue for a full day or longer, assuming you don't get booted because the servers are constantly shutting down, losing your place within the queue. And the support e-mail address they provide returns my e-mails indicating that it is no longer in use. I have yet to try snail mail however, I suspect that it might be a futile process.

Save your money, wait for Star Wars Galaxy and hope they've got it together.

Utterly Pathetic

I been playing UO for just about 2 years now and this expansion is the worst gaming experience I have ever had.

OSI seems to not care a damn for quality and this expansion has seen 6 patches in the last 2 weeks. There are about 100 known bugs in it to date. If you need help, don't expect any, or expect to wait 5 to 6 hours for it. And you keep getting this terribly worn out "We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you" line. Which I have seen too many times since I AoS was published.

The system crashes at least twice a day, and if you want to play in the evening(est), forget it. Unless you don't mind trying to log in 50 times to get in.

The games latency has been horrid. The lag is so bad that it makes the game unplayable.

This expansion's new world "malas" is nothing more than a giant housing project. Yet another way for certain people to profit financially from the game once more. Like it has been said before the new monsters. What is new about them ? They look different, but they are the same thing over & over, time and again.

Save yourself some stress and [$$], do not even buy this, I wish I didn't. Now I want a refund. Like I will ever be able to pry a refund from OSI's greedy hands.

Was a Great Game

I hate to say this but this use to be a great game, not only for newbie's but for veteran players alike. Now if you dont have good skills you cant go anywhere in the game. Being that most people who start out in the game as a New Character with low skills, unable to make money, unable to buy reagents, unable to buy armour, having to relay on other players to help you out. It is not a lot of fun. It also is not a lot of fun, due to they lower animal stats, now pets jet kills almost as quickly as the owner. Combat rules changed, now monsters can do more damage to chars...thus killing people and pets faster than they use to. If u want to die a lot get this game, enjoy dieing..this is the game for you..enjoy spending money monthly to die this is the game for you. What can I say unless you are a veteran player, it will take you at least 6-8 months to make a character that is able to make money and in the long run you will have died numerous times, unless a veteran player comes to help out. To bad you cant rate game with 1/2 stars, because that is what they have done to this game.

Don't waste your money

I played Ultima Online for about 4 years and finally quit around the release of AoS. Honestly.. don't waste your time buying it. In the beginning, UO was UO. People played it because of the differences from EQ or Diablo. PvP was skill based and not item based. But that's what AoS has turned UO into - a mindless item based game just like everything else out there. PLUS OSI makes you pay ... a month for service that is completely [bad] and every new update only benefits those that refuse to engage in Player vs Player combat. Almost every single template has been nerfed and even though 99% of gameplay is based on magic, magery has been nerfed the most and[messed up] over time and time again. Melee templates with the best weapons and items dominate the game and can kill a mage in 2 hits or less. Casting delays for mages were set at a reasonable level before but now they've been prolonged even further. Seriously.. go play D2 or EQ if you'd rather play item based games so you can save 120 bux a year.

Great Fun

I started playing UO with the AoS expansion (which contains every aspect of UO, including previous expansions) and have absolutely loved my time playing.

I hear dial-up users have problems with in game lag slowdowns. Around the release, the problems were horrendous. However, they have implemented a series of fixes designed to improve dial-up play, so the experience isn't as horrible as some of these other reviews would have you believe. However, DSL is still far preferably to dial-up, even though dial-up has been made fairly viable, from what I hear.

Anyways, the game is endlessly rich, complex, fun. Deep variety, countless possible goals, infinite character customization, many skills to choose from (go to www.uo.com and look under Playguide, then Skills--you'll be amazed at the possibilities :) ) There are many cool spells, special moves, combat classes, etc. Including dragon-tamers, positive-karma paladins, evil necromancers, hypnotising bards, etc. etc. Be a chef. Be a treasure hunter, who fights sea serpents for treasure maps. Be a blacksmith, using rare runic hammers to create precious armor. Start your own mining business. Build a house. Host tournaments. Be a poison-concocting assassin who dissapears in shadows. Its endless.

I could go on forever. All I know is the game is extremely addicting, and fun--bliss.

It's hard to learn, but it pays off once you're in and strategizing and developing various unique strengths and skills and having a blast.

The game can be quite challenging, but I find that very fun. Its challenging that causes you to find creative solutions to challenges, but not too challenging or impossible. :)

There are a lot of opportunities for in-game entrepreneuship, as you interact and make money from other players. There is a lot of excitement involved with challenging monsters/dungeons, and player-vs-player antics.

I recommend giving the game a try, going through the somewhat tedious process of learning the game, and then experience the sheer joy of playing the game. It's not for everyone, but it's still hands down one of the best games I've ever played.

There are bugs, and the 3D version of the game (there are both 2d and 3D versions) has graphical glitches and doesn't always look great, but these issues will be resolved eventually by the UO live team, and the gameplay and fun value far overshadows everything else, IMHO. Veterans don't like many of the changes that came in with AoS; as a new player with no idea of how things used to be, I find no reason to complain, but quite the opposite. :)
