While the 2d version appears a little dated as far as artwork, the overall game and playability continues to offer the most for the money. You are free to choose and later change what skills you have, new areas have been added for housing, new skills, new spells, etc. The housing issue continues to be a primary concern and as soon as new areas open, it fills with housing. It may take a month or two for the older areas of the game to open up for housing since space becomes available as people upgrade or move their house. While many people get bored with the game it may be because it's not a hack and slash or shooter type game. Choosing which server to play on is as important as designing your character's skills. Buy it and see for yourself.

I have been playing this game since 1998, I have 5 accounts now, and had 7 accounts, but sold them and two houses, due to not having enough time to play them all.
This is the only game I have played this long, I usually get bored with games in about 3 or 4 months, not cause I beat them. It is usally due to the fact that it is just beating the program. Which doesn't do it for me.
With Ultima Online, thought you can hook up with other players and go hunting, do things other than hunt, like you can creat your own game within this game. Like you can play Hide and Seek, another thing you can do is play a game that was invented by the players within this game, called Bag ball. It is a soccer type varint type game. The designers saw everyone playing the game, so they created a bagball stadium, and also a Bagball. So the designers have always listened to the players, and they take the players input and put it into the game.
In the other online games, you get what the game caompany wants you to have. OSI, as bad as everyone talks about them and the game, has listened to the players, they may not always make the best desicisions, but they will implement it and usually it makes the game play sensable.
I was not able to play this game for three weeks after buying it, due to the lag issues, but so much was put into this game. Yeah I was getting frustarted that I could not play. But now I can play, the dailup people are still having a problem, so from that aspect it is still laggy really bad, but they are still working on a solution for that.
Awesome... no other way to express it

This game is awesome. Ignore what others may think or say.
This expansion includes over 40,000 more house spots, so even more people can get a house! The Necromancer and the Paladin both totally rock.
The graphics are outdated, yes, but the depth of this game is unreal. You can do ANYTHING you want. Wake up and boot it up and decide you want to learn how to craft a new bow and arrow. The next day after work you decide to go hunting and kill a dragon. The next day you decide to hang out in towns and help new players, or go deep into dungeons and rez people for free!
This game is so huge, you can do anything you want. All it takes is hard work and you got it.
Get this game. Play this game. Be this game!
Still the Ultimate

First let's talk replay value. The game's been going five years, and there are still veteran players like myself hooked to the game, it's never ending story, and in-(and out of) game friends. Some people don't like it saying it's tedious, or boring, or has no ending so it's unfulfilling. Then take your short attention span and go play Diablo 2, beat the game, and try to keep playing 5 years non-stop, you'll see the difference. UO is not just a game it's the closest to an alternate world we've come. Buld a house, make friends, work at your occupation (you make your own hours and take breaks whenever, lol) and if that's not the life you want go kill monsters or go to Felucca and kill each other. Huzzah.
Ten dollars a month is much cheaper than the fifty to a hundred you'd constantly be shelling out for the newest, flashiest coolest pseudo RPG's in a vain attempt at gaming excitement that fades after a few playings. Go with UO, you won't regret it.
Not for DIAL-UP!!! Don't buy it if you are on dial-up..

I've played Ultima Online for years on Dial-Up and now I can't play it at all. I'm not alone either. Check out the Ultima Online message boards. Everyone on Dial-Up either can not play at all or can do nothing but sit in an empty town and do crafts.
Not worth the money!!!
A turn for the worst

I played UO for three years and then quit for the last two so after a two year break, icame back expecting myself to love it more than ever. But NO NO NO. Why? THis came is based purely on ITems. I played back when there was no trammel, only felucca. There was tons of PvP, guild warfare. IT was great. But then something happened. 100 resist useless. it used to be that your skills counted not your armor. THe delay time for casting spells is insane. You didnt used to have to spend 6 months working up the money to buy the armor and jewelry you need. So anyone thinking about coming back to UO. DON'T. I suggest you try out DArk age of Camelot, a good game from what i hear. well thanx OSI for ruining the best MMORPG there was.

Age of Shadows is very bugged to say the least. I've been very disappointed with game play. There is almost constant lag and disconnects due to server overloads because of lack of preparation by company. Its very difficult for a new player to start. You may spend a couple hours to develop a new character only to have the server crash and set you back to the beginning again. This has been a very frustrating experience. I would definitely not recommend this product to anyone at the current time.
Very Disappointed

constant struggle to connect to servers; constant lag when you do connect during peak hours; poor customer service through game/website/telephone calls; 90% of game play time is spent dealing with continuous bugs
Complete garbage

After almost 3 years of playing Ultima Online, and loving every minute of it, they release this Age of Shadows.
They've reduced a wonderful, exciting game to a shadow of its former self. Before this expansion, your character relied on his/her skills to carry them forward. Now, it's all about the items you own. Their new "item insurance" feature ensures that if you have the gold, you will never lose an item, taking away the risk factor for almost every encounter, whether it be fighting monsters, or fighting other players.
If you want a game that is a race to see who has the best items, by all means buy it. If you want a world filled with wonder and challenges at every turn, you missed the boat.
Thumbs down...
