I have played all of the major Sierra games .. King's Quest, Space Quest .. and Myst and others etc.. The Longest Journey is fantastic .. great plot, character development. Lots of interesting places to visit, characters to meet. The puzzles fit very well into the game.. I highly recommend this game
What boring conversations?

Do you enjoy watching movies? Well think of this as a really good movie, except you are making the choices. I am a HUGE adventure gaming fan. Played King's quest and Police Quest when I was a kid. Space Quest and Quest for Glory were great.
What makes an adventure game special, is it's story line. This has a great plot. The most important thing is, that it keeps you involved all the time. There aren't too many dull moments. Someone earlier commented, on how there are 30 minute conversations. That's nonsense. First of all, that's not true. Anyway conversations in movies are longer! That's not the point, if they are long or not, the point is, you don't get bored. They are all interesting, though admitedly, part of the heroin's like is like Felicity! Anyway this game is a must have for everyone, YOU MUST PLAY IT! Enjoy this book/movie/game/adventure... all into one.
Sierra has lost faith in the genre, it started. Young companies like this, show Sierra why it must return to the Quest. The adventure gaming may be back. This game may go down in history as the catalyst.
Best adventure game to come out in awhile

...
"The Longest Journey" is the best adventure game I played last year, (although it isn't my favorite adventure game of all time... It did, however, deliver on its title, and provided many long hours of gameplay.
The puzzles range from pretty simple, to more complex (to downright impossible... if you miss something, that is). The storyline is epic and moves through many different environments, the graphics are beautiful, and the voice acting is almost all really great.
My only complaint is this: copious amounts of expository dialogue. Don't get me wrong, I love dialog, but at points during the game, I just rolled my eyes and thought "let's get on with it." It's clear that the author/creator of this game really loved the story. And it's also clear that if the game were turned into a novel, it would be a thick one.
Of course, of all possible complaints, this one is probably the easiest to deal with. If you can get past it, then you will be treated to an intriguing story, good characters, challenging puzzles, and a long journey.
Not perfect, but very very good

First, let me say that I'm a 53-year old gamer who doesn't care for ultra violence and gore, and no longer has the reflexes necessary for the "action" games. I've been playing computer games since the original Zork (walk south ... open door)... Keep that in mind as you read on ....
I agree with many of the other reviewers that there was a LOT of talking in this game (although you can zap through much of it) and there are times when everything is SO slow (like in that *&$%_*&$ library!).
Also, I am completely opposed to the kind of foul language used in the game. No one would have noticed its absence, but its presence was a big minus.
However, even given those flaws, this was a compelling, interesting, and entertaining game. The puzzles were, for the most part, logical ... the storyline was excellent ... the characterizations wonderful. I enjoy games where characters interact (rather than exploring alone, a la Myst). And I loved the ending!! I truly didn't want it to stop!!
Perfect? No. But very very good!
I was hooked

I was hooked in the first half hour. I like a good story but this was more like an interactive movie that you do at your own pace.I like the fact that I don't get killed and the profanity was mild compared to what I hear today out of kids(or adults on that matter).Even my kids were enchanted by april and the other characters.I didn't play myst or riven until after I played TLJ and I still like TLJ the best. I'm hoping for a sequel.
The Most Frustrating Journey

Pros:
1. I like the imaginative settings and graphics.
2. I like the music and some of the speakers/actors.
3. I like the diversity of characters.
Cons:
1. I had a lot of trouble getting this to work correctly - (possibly because of my inexperience with computer games?)
2. There is something insidiuosly immoral about April's behavior, which bothers me. She gives a detective who hasn't done anything wrong poisoned candy just to get rid of him. She is the cause of a shipwreck and loss of life of those on board because she wants to get her own way. She does this all without so much as an iota of regret or tremor of guilt. I suppose the idea here is that the end justifies the means and since she's saving the world it doesn't matter how many people get sick or drown along the way. I know it's just a game, but I believe games are a reflection of our culture and do influence young minds.
3. April's inverted ice cream cone breasts are laughably unrealistic.
4. There IS a lot of dialogue, sometimes tedious.
The first thing you should know

Technical support is not available. Funcom has gone on to other things, you won't be able to get a reply from them, and you won't be able to join the forum at their website. According to rumor on the web, they have reassigned all their support people to other games.
Much of the plot is revealed in live-action movies, and these would almost always crash back to the desktop. I've finished the game, but still haven't been able to see several of the movies, so I missed some major plot points. If you have problems like this, you are completely on your own.
It's a fun game, and only missed the 5th star because of the tech support. That's a shame, because this would have been one of the classic, "must play" games in this genre.
The game carries a "Mature" (+17) rating, due to some "strong" language your 12-year-old probably hears every day. I'd be more concerned that understanding much of the interaction does require a grown-up point of view.
An unusual feature is gameplay through a viewpoint character, art student April Ryan. This is very different from the anonymous "you" exploring in first-person the worlds of Myst, Riven and most other games in this genre. Instead, you tell April what to do, and she mostly does it. I liked this interface a lot, and April quickly became one of my favorite characters.
A different adventure game - "interactive movie"

Overall, I would say this is a good game. I enjoyed playing it and it kept my attention. The story is complex and imaginative and the graphics/sound are well done.
It is a different type of game. It reminded me more of an interactive movie than the normal adventure game. There is a lot of dialouge and a good bit of time when you are simply listening to others talk. It does get tedious at times.
The puzzles seem to take a backseat to the storyline which is definately the most important part of this game. Some puzzles seemed to be solved too quickly and two puzzles were simply too long to complete (trial & error solutions). Many of the puzzles, however, required thought about what other characters told you and further learning about the story to solve the puzzle.
There is also a lot of walking back and forth between places which can also become tedious.
Overall, I enjoyed the game, characters, and the look of everything. It ends too quickly - they seem to be clearly setting up for the next game. I would only buy this game if you are willing to become involved in a story and willing to do a lot more listening and a lot less playing than usual. If you are, this will be a great game. If not, I would look for a different game.
What a nice change

I really liked this game and it's nothing that I can put my finger on. But, it actually had a really nice plot that kept me thinking about it weeks after solving the game. As a woman adventure gamer, I loved seeing a game that had a little bit of future a little bit of fairy tale, a little philosophy and a great sense of humor WITHOUT having to shoot my way through anything. My favorite part of the game is when right up front the makers tell you that you will NOT die. Yes, you might have to do a few things that are a bit repetative, but overall, you have so much variety that it was a pleasure from beginning to end. Some of the language was a bit trite and mouthy for my taste, but the characters and story more than made up for it. I think the creators are on to something here. Overall, it has been my favorite game I've ever played and I've played a lot. I have yet to see another game of similar make out there. Yes, some parts are too easy and some dialog too much, however, I still wish there was more out there similar to this game. Wonderful graphics and I was never bored.
I was sorry I had to finish it

The Longest Journey is the best adventure game I've played in years. It's so well written that playing it is like reading a wonderful fantasy novel.
The puzzles are logical instead of obscure; it's not easy, but it makes sense. I was very rarely frustrated, if at all.
If you don't like long conversations, this is not the game for you. But if you enjoy meeting interesting characters and playing an absorbing plotline, you'll be sorry when the game ends too.
