Best adventure game in a long time

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 4 / 4

This is indeed the best adventure game I have played in a long time. There are not many games out there on the market in the pure adventure genre, but THE LONGEST JOURNEY is definately a great game with a great storyline!

If you don't know, THE LONGEST JOURNEY is about a young woman named April who lives in America in a near-distant future. April is an artist, hoping to get a grant by a local school for admission. But lately April is troubled by her dreams and telling you anymore would be unfair. This storyline is utterly engrossing. It is like watching a long, but really great movie. Plus, I was captivated by the graphics of the game as well.

The puzzles range from really easy to moderately difficult. Seasoned adventure gamers should not have a problem. All of the puzzles have a logical solution to them. There are not to many games out there right now that require you to stop and think: How do I make this work?

All in all, this is one of the best games of any genre that I have ever played and that is the truth. If you are a fan of MYST, ALONE IN THE DARK, MONKEY ISLAND and maybe TOMB RAIDER, you'll fall in love with THE LONGEST JOURNEY! Trust me, I cannot reccomend this game enough. It was worth every penny.

Digital storytelling at its finest

This game was clearly designed with the ambition to be more than "just" an entertaining and challenging game - it was designed to tell an epic story and to tell it in a manner to rival the best fantasy literature you will find.

In a way, perhaps, their job was easier than that of the writer. They could give their characters voices and faces without the need for the poetic touch that writers must have to make their characters come alive. And they could guide the reader through the story, fully knowing that the interactivity of a game would draw him into it and make him identify with the story.

Nevertheless, I find the game a staggering success. It told a captivating story filled with rich characters. It left me missing a "playback" function so that I could replay the story without interactivity just so I can reminisce, much as I will often go back to a good book to read it again.

If you are planning to pick up a book with which to fill your spare time, consider trying The Longest Journey in stead. A game, it is different from a book, but the experience you get is much similar.

Of course, there were good challenges, it was technically very good, etc. But the one factor that makes this my game of the year was the story.

long, soo long

I love adventure games, seek and find games and puzzle games. Thinking that's what this game was and seeing how it got such good reviews I gave it a try. After about 4 hours of reading dialogue, I began to feel very disapointed. It's like it's a movie you have to click through and read for hours and then they'll throw in a puzzle which is ridiculously strange. " Turn of the light in the bathroom and replace an eyeball while the guy's on the toilet. What? Who is going to figure that out? Some sicko? Every time there was a puzzle, I had to use a walkthrough. I wanted to play a game not read for hours and hours then finally get a puzzle which doesn't make any sense. You are basically just constantly meeting new characters and talking and talking to them, going to get them something then talking and talking to someone else and on and on. And I am only on the third chapter. I am going to finish it, since I paid for it, but it is basically a total waste of time, I started playing tomb raider instead.

Great Game

I'm normally a strategy gamer but I heard so much about The Longest Journey, I decided to try it. I bought it used from Amazon, and have been playing it nonstop since I received it.

The story is excellent so far - it could stand on its own as a fantasy novel. The writing is great. Some people have criticized the game for the use of 4 letter words, but the dialog really reflects the way young people speak. Most people, if they're honest, will admit that they spoke that way when they were 20.

My only quibble with the game is that some of the solutions to the puzzles were too obscure. I believe that, without internet access, lots of players will not be able to finish the game. This would be a shame, as the story and dialog are so good, everyone who plays should be allowed to play through to the end, even if they can't solve the puzzles.

Death by dialogue!

This game is great in the sense that it's extremely involved and has an interesting storyline. The only problem is that the dialogue begins to drive you crazy after a while. Characters will talk back and forth at an average of about one to five minutes and at certain times can go on for about 15 to 20 minutes. And really nothing they say adds any profound meaning the story. Added to this, most of the dialogue is corny. So, what ends up happening is you're playing for about 10 minutes, and then they talk for 5. It doesn't seem like much, but you'd swear after a while that conversations pop up every time you turn a corner.

I'm trying to be conservative in my numbers here to not exaggerate how long the dialogue can take, but at about half way through the game, you'll come to a point where, (I kid you not) they run you through a 20 minute, drawn out, mind boggling, painfully pointless, wordy dialogue. Halfway though the twenty minutes you're already livid about the endless jabbering, but it's the last ten minutes where you'll feel the slip of your sanity being removed from the last part of your brain.

Now this game just doesn't have a normal ending. It has your "WTF!!!" Mist type ending. All of your adventures will end in one big anticlimactic "WTF just happened" added with the "Maybe there's something more after the credits are over", but sadly no there isn't. You're left with mouse in hand and a confused look on your face and coated eyes of despair of how much of your life you have just wasted.

Longest Journey was touted as being one of the greatest games unknown to man, but in all honesty it has its major flaws. There were times that I was enjoying the game, but eventually I found myself using the walkthroughs only to find myself asking how anyone would solve such insanely obscure puzzles.

The Longest Journey is just that, the longest finger nail pulling journey of your life. You may find it interesting as I did at first, but realize that you've gotten yourself in over your head and just want to finish the game, but without the walkthrough you'll find yourself dead in water over and over again. Take my advice and buy the game cheap if you really want to play it. That way, if you find that you're just as bored as I was, you won't feel so cheated.

The Greatest Game of All Time

The Longest Journey, I can easily say, is the best adventure game I have ever played. It pains my heart to know that never again will a game as witty, hysterical, intruiging and engaging as The Longest Journey will ever come my way again. It features some of the most gorgeous art I've ever seen, the beautiful landscapes really throw you into the game world. Even though it's 3D graphics are in 3rd person, you feel as if you're seeing everything through Aprils eyes, her constant thoughts really influence you. This game has the deepest and most involving plot I've ever been fotunate enough to see, some things will make you fall out of your chair laughing, and this game is the first at which scenes have actually brought you to tears. The voice acting is among the best, everyone has been cast to perfection, and the out-takes of the game are HILARIOUS. Speaking of hilarious, this game is the most witty, daring and funny of all the games I have ever played, beating the likes of Terry Pratchetts DiscWorld, Simon the Sorceror, the LucasArts games and even Leisure Suit Larry. I can't convey enough the love I have for this game, I've played it over and over and over, but I hope to god that one day there is a sequel and you'll enjoy this game as much as I have.

The top adventure game of the decade!

Having finished this game, the only words I have to describe this fantastic experience is WOW! The gameplay is fantastic, but beyond the gameplay, what kept me completely engrossed in this game is the fantastic storyline which just completely holds you in the overall experience. Highly recommended!!

A very rich game; just wish it were harder

As a veteran of puzzle-oriented games, I find they fall into two categories generally: heavy on plot, or heavy on intellectual puzzle-solving. "Journey" is of the former type. I love the fact that there IS a very well-developed plot and there ARE very well-developed characters, but the solutions to puzzles are dropped in your lap most of the time, between the protagonist's conversations and her journal. A couple of times they weren't obvious, and then they were nearly impossible to come up with.

That being said, my husband and I are having a wonderful time playing this game. As a woman, I can say that having a female protagonist for a change is a great thing, although I do wish some of the women would be in NON skin-tight clothes occaisionally, but I'm not about to tell the gaming industry who their primary audience is. The graphics are lovely, except that for some reason, the well-rendered characters with fairly realistic movement are completely incapable of interacting realistic with any of the objects. We don't know what's up with that.

My only other small nitpick is the language. For myself, I find it very entertaining/refreshing, but I was thinking that having a toggle would be nice. I would have loved to share this game with my preteen cousins, because the story-telling way of leading you through the puzzles would be very good for younger players. However, if I gave this to them, my uncle would never speak to me again, I'm sure.

I would *definitely* recommend this game, particularly if you want something that tells a story and whose puzzles aren't in the same league as, say, the MYST family.

TLJ in one word -- Breathtaking

Every so often a game will come along that can be honestly described as a "must have" game - TLJ is one such game. Not only is the game play well designed, but the environment and atmosphere of Arcadia and Stark pulls the gamer into April Ryan's world. On top of these, there's a score that would rival any symphonic concert (its so good, theres even a soundtrack available to purchase) combined with a storeline that deserves to be a novel in its own right.

Through this mix of musical score, rich dialogue, entrancing scenery and well thought storyline, FunCom has created an adventure game that at times feels more as if you're watching a movie-quality production rather than just playing a game.

Now the only thing that could make it better would be a sequel as soon as possible.

A great holiday game.

You know, with all these action movies coming out for Christmas, all lacking any story or point at all, going going to need something to suck you in a lot more. If you want story this game has TONS. Each of the 4 CDs has about ten hours of gameplay. The fantastic graphics are realistic in a magical and much more colorful then most other games recently. Fantastic music and every voice actor gives a great performance. Of course if you a person who hates a long journey...

I just mean that there are really long conversations in the game. Adventurists will love this kind of game that you can settle down and play for hours. The story is like an onion, you just keep peeling and peeling and unwrapping a story that has so many turns and twists (but not in that particular order). This is a great game for gamers, but a CLASSIC for adventure purists.
