The Longest Journey is Awesome

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 5 / 5

For fans of the old Sierra style adventure games like King's Quest, Space Quest and Quest for Glory, You will love this game. In my opinion it has to be one of the best adventure games ever made. The Graphics were awesome and the story was very well written. The Music in the game was very well composed and gives a perfect mood when playing the game. If you like adventure games then is a must have. It reminds me of the old days when Adventure games were more popular. It is too bad more people don't play them, not only do you get and awesome story, you get to have a lot of fun as well. The Longest Journey is a story you will never forget.

A must for adventure gamers

This tops my list of favorite adventure games (think Myst, et al.)! The story is wonderful and immerses you into the world completely. While some find it frustrating that they "need" some items later on that they missed picking up, every seasoned adventure gamer knows that it is imperative to investigate and save everything they find. Gameplay is long and you definitely get your money's worth with this one. Two thumbs-up!

Good game marred by too much talk

I just finished playing "The Longest Journey," and I liked it. I didn't *love* it, and here's why:

- There's way, way, way too much talk. I love to read, and a certain amount of conversation doesn't bother me at all in a game. This was just over the edge, though. There were conversations that lasted more than 15 minutes, and ultimately weren't really very interesting.

- There's no good way to skip animation. April (the main character) walks from place to place, and you have to sit and watch her walk. You can make her run, which is a little better. You can also hit the escape key to skip the animation, but it only skips it ahead a little -- so to get her from one place to another fast, you have to keep hitting "escape." It would have been nice -- and pretty darned easy -- to make it possible to click from one location to another once they've already been visited.

- Some of the puzzles are entirely based on "hunt the pixel" -- success hinges on finding the one tiny pixel that's hidden behind something else. I want puzzles to require intelligence and flexibility on my part, not keen eyesight and infinite patience in moving the mouse over the screen.

The game *was* good. The voice acting was excellent, the graphics were pretty, and the characters were engaging. The story was also very good (though some threads never got resolved, which was annoying).

"The Longest Journey" has very little replay potential -- it would be too tedious to watch April walk around and talk to people once you know how the story turns out.

If you buy this one, just be ready for a lot of chit-chat on the way to a satisfying story.

Great concept but incomplete follow-through

The Longest Journey is a pretty unique RPG - it gives you the role of a teenage girl who lives in the future. You move through her world, dealing with her landlady, her classmates, her boss, her friends, and many others.

Like other RPGs, you have to find items, solve puzzles, remember clues from conversations and in the end Save the World. As a base RPG, it's pretty fun, with good graphics and gameplay.

If you love dialogue (a la Planescape Torment), then you'll enjoy this. There is GOBS of dialogue. Everyone you meet has lots of things to say, and they go on and on. Be sure to have lots of snacks and drinks nearby, because you could be there for a while clicking to learn more.

On the downside, this can get tedious at times, and there are times when something is obviously sitting in front of a person's nose, but they won't do anything until you ask just the right combination of questions.

I was also disappointed by the immature, "girly" attitude of the heroine. I was hoping this would be a realistic young woman that would help encourage people playing to respect her. Instead, she's ditzy, has the "ick" reaction to a lot of things, and is downright snotty at times. While this may be the *stereotype* of women of this age, it is hardly the reality.

Still, the game definitely has a personality, and the characters and plot are well thought out. This might be a game that gets girls into playing who might not be interested in playing other games ... and it starts to encourage other game developers to work on this style of game. We can only hope that at some point in the future they'll have a game with a female lead character that doesn't involve torpedo-shaped breasts or unpleasant characteristics.

Have to rave about this game!!

I don't write reviews but I had to tell those of you looking for a witty,exciting,non-combative,puzzle solving adventure game, This is it! Graphics are good, sound quality is great, The character you play had me giggling at some of her responses, help is available in various forms within the game as well as having a good internet site with hints and links to another site which allows you to only see one hint at a time using the UHS reader.Like a good book I could not wait to get back to this game each day and found it very difficult to tear myself away from it. I wish there were more of this type of non-combative adventures. The only niggles I had was that some of the conversations waffled a little and there is enough swearing in it for me to put a 15yrs & over rating on it,but it didn't detract from the total enjoyment and read the book at the end of the game!. Well done Funcom

Logical,Beautiful, and FUN!

How does any game with obscure origins (Norway) and not heavily marketed win awards from several respected game review sites? Its simple. It was that good! (example site: gamespot.com) Everything was well done: Graphics, sound, scoring, voice acting, puzzles, and most important the story. If you like adventure games, then this one will appeal to you. I found the puzzles to be logical which is a relief since so many of these games add unrealistic logic puzzles. (An example would be that to get your wallet from under the couch, you have to put a food item under the sofa and then have your pet white mouse crawl under there and walla out he comes with, not the food, but your wallet. does that make sense? Why not just move the sofa?) The story was quite interesting and fresh. The only downside would be that April, the main character is a bit of a smart a#$ and has the potty mouth to go with that type of character. If you are easily offended by occasional bad language then this is not for you. I actually found the character to be well developed and her attitude humerous. Most game creators add maddeningly diffcult, or illogical puzzles so that the game takes many hours to complete. They think of this as value. The creators of this game used a different approach. Their game/story has so much depth that it takes up 3 CD's! Now thats real value!

Long, but beautifully presented!

I found this game to be absolutely fascinating! I found some of the dialog to be a bit time consuming, but then time was what I had. It takes patience to get through all of the chapters. And going into each level was generally a surprise! Figuring out the puzzles take some brain power, but if a puzzle isn't solvable at the time you encounter it, you haven't had April, the heroine, do everything yet. It was a real pleasure to play a game that is a "girl" adventure story that did not have the heroine kileed everytime something went wrong! 3D effects are wonderful!

I don't see how people rated this 1 star...

I will cut to the chase here, I LOVED this game. The graphics were beautiful, and there were mini moives in the game! The aimation was smooth and although the dialoge was a little long, the voices were beautiful, and you could fast foward through the dialoge. If you did do that, however, you can read it in the conversations folder, as well as re-watch the movies, and read April's dairy. I looooved this game. It is a very beautiful adventure game, meaning puzzles not blowing things up. Another good thing is you cannot die. That my friend, is a very good feature. My only gripe was the epilouge, which I didn't think was conclusive enough. However, it was not bad enough for me to take points off from this beautifully engaging computer game. There is also strong langauge in the game, so be warned. I highly recommend this.

The best of its genre.

The Longest Journey is one of the best games I played last year. Its the best adventure game I'e ever played, except maybe there's a tie between this and Grim Fandango and the Monkey Island series. But while many of Lucasarts adventures are more comedy based, this is more of a drama. It has humor, romance, action, and anything in between. The storyline is wonderful, the charecters so fleshed out you feel like you know them, the puzzles logical, and for once in a game, the main charecter is a female, yet is not a supermodel, and is not treated like one(If you like at many games, from Tomb Raider to Drakan, the stars are supermodels). While it may be slow to some at first, I actually liked it from the begining. If you have patience for some tough puzzles, this game is a must buy and is one of the best games of the century(Even if we're only 2 years into the century).

The most touching PC game ever produced

Nothing would be enough to describe how surprised I was when I finished " The Longest Journey" wondering how deeply it had touched me inside, how true the characters in the game appeared to be and how dramatic and surprising the events in the story was. The story returns again and again to mind even after hours of finishing the whole game. This is the first time I have played a pc game that has so much to do with emotions, feelings and inner thoughts that reside deep insde one's mind. This is not just a game, something more than that. Excellent background music, beautiful sceneries and totally new and thrilling storyline along with numerous shocking and joyful surprises in the plot has made it almost like a movie. I did not understand that the game was so much getting into my feelings till I ended it, suddenly I realized the pain and intense desire for more. I shall recommend everyone to play this beautiful game otherwise know for sure you are missing something really really worthwhile.
