Civ Won Best Game of The Year

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 0 / 6
Date: December 29, 2005

This game lived up to the Best Game of 2005 Award that multiple gaming sites gave this game. This game allows you the freedom to create a culture, unique identity, and become the country that you've dreamed about. Do you want to reincarnate the Romans, The Huns, The Napoleanic Area, the US, anything is possible with this game. This game is best game I've played in my 29 years of gaming. If you don't like to think and just want to run around mindlessly with a gun, this game isn't for you. If you have some substance and imagination, you will love this game.

Horrible Multiplayer Experience

Playing game on P4 2.8 GHz, 2 GB Ram, Soundblaster Audigy2, Radeon 9800 Pro (256MB), 4 Mbps highspeed internet.

Had game for 6 months.

Civ 4 is a great game once you get used to the game play / interface. The AI's tend to be very predictable once you get used to their "personalities." Still, on single player you can probably enjoy about 4 or 5 games before you start to get bored.

Where it really falls down is in the multi-player category. This game is almost unplayable in multi-player. If you try to connect to a game you will most often get a "connecting to peer" message for about 2 minutes and then the game will either a) crash to the desktop, or b) return you to the multiplayer "lobby" to start all over again. About 20% of the time you will actually get into a game that will launch. Then you have to worry about all the other bugs. The game has a tendency to just freeze in the middle of multi player games. Sometimes you will be playing along and then the game will crash to your desktop, as all the other players do the same. Other times the game will freeze when a player tries to enter or leave that multiplayer session, ruining the game for all others involved.

On the other hand, if you do manage to actually play a multiplayer game without mishap, this game is wonderful. The game play gains depth with human opponents that the AI just cannot match. The problem is that it's a BIG "if" when it comes to successfully getting on a multiplayer game.

Most unfortunate is that the makers of the game refuse to take responsiblity for the problems this game has. It's well known to anyone who has tried to play multiplayer that these issues exsist, yet the customer support refuses to acknowledge them and gives you a run around if you call in to try to correct them. What's more is that customer support seems oblivious to the actual way the game is supposed to run. It's obvious that the phone handlers you get when you call in know very little about the game and merely give you a scripted list of "corrections" that do nothing to remedy the problems.

Recommendation: If you want to get any long term playability for your money do not buy this game.

CIV IV is even better than CIV III

The Mac version of CIV IV continues to suck away all my free time. The graphics and interface are greatly improved and the music and sound are incredible. Requires a FAST Mac and most of the online scenarios only work for Windows users, but it is still by far the best game I have played and it keeps me coming back for more.

I hadn't played Civilization since the first incarnation, and I thought I'd come back and give it another go, since this one was getting such great reviews. I'm a big strategy fan, but I found that something was missing from this game. And very hard to put my finger on it is too.

I played it all the way through once, and didn't really feel inspired to start again. It just felt like everything would play pretty much the same, even if it was on a different map. The idea of ramping up the difficulty to make it more interesting doesn't appeal to me, since I feel like it would just be frustrating. Frankly, it was a struggle to get over the boredom to even play through until the end and beat my last competition.

I guess overall the game is well presented, educational and relatively deep. The problem I had with it was that I just wasn't having fun. At all. Roll on the arrival of Medieval 2: Total War. I can't see myself playing this one again.

When installing (and each time I open the game), I get a message that that my computer does not meet the minimum requirement. However, it does run fine.

Now, when I installed the 1.61 patch, then I got a fatal error that caused the program to quit.

I didnt know this game was a turn based game but its still fun. Some people like this kind of game.

OK, but past Civilizations are better

The game is fun, but it has periods when it is very annoying. I hate the expense for every city "feature". I am a great conquerer, but charging me for cities usually loses me the game as all my units go on strike and then I get attacked simultaneously by three plus civilizations. Always happens just before I wipe out another civilization.

Didn't like this game...

My daughter and I both tried this game and had the same feelings about it. I thought it'd be something different than it actually is. Neither of us liked the turn based system. We also wanted more control over the game. I also had mixed feelings on the graphics. Although I liked the colors of the game, the characters and the world were small - I couldn't get close to look at the cities, etc. I just didn't enjoy this game at all and was rather disappointed that it wasn't what I expected.
