this game would have been awesome if you could ever get it to play right on your pc, disc 2 is flawed, the first thing i had to do was download a patch for it which proves the game doesnt play right. if you have an older pc forget about it. i finally had to send this back to amazon for a refund. I had to go through a major ordeal just to get the program un-installed, the designers released this game to early and it is just a major pain in the ass just to try and play it, the other civ games are great! hope they get the bugs out!! Not only is Civilization IV the best of the series, it keeps getting better. The developers keep releasing new updates that make the game more enjoyable and engrossing.

Moreover, the third party mod community has put together some incredible stuff. Fantasy mods, mods that use real world land imagery (totally cool), and all kinds of content that just keeps the game fresh and new even months after release.

Each generation of game should get better but Civ IV is ehhh.....

Civ IV is not really that much better than Civ III. I bought it expecting it to 'WOW' me in it's advancement, instead I was suprised how cartoony the animation, scenery, and everything else is despite having such high system requirements.

The depth of gameplay is WAY better and the computer is way harder to beat, but instead of fighting wars and building civilizations, I found much of my time was wrapped up in politics and bartering with the other civilizations over necessary resources, even though I controlled over 50% of the "earth".

I found that it was incredable hard to wage war for some reason, despite the fact that I had tanks and the civilization I was attacking had only musketeers.

Overall, I'd say instead of stepping forwards, Civilization IV is a completely NEW GAME and should not be linked to Civilzation III except by genre.

Despite playing Civilizations I-III, Civilization IV dissappointed me. I WANTED it to be awsome, but it just wasn't, which is sad really, because I had such high hopes for it. =-/

Sid's Civ keeps getting better and better

Pros: Each sequel keeps getting better and better. This Civ has added religion to the gameplay, which can make or destroy relationships with your neighbors - staying true to history with leaders disagreeing with neighboring countries religions. The options are almost unlimited, so each scenario you play feels like a whole new game. You can play quick games or "epic" games, there are tons of options for your terraforming, overall the game is perfect.

Cons: If you don't have a fast computer, the gameplay can be tedius as you wait for the graphics to load just simply so you can "enter" to the next turn. I played this on my 1.4 ghz processor laptop and it grew very tiresome. Once I loaded it on my desktop (2.4 ghz) it ran flawlessly.

Take a travel in time ... Today.

This is my first strategy pc game and I must say I do enjoy it very much.
The game takes you through time and history in a most interesting and clever way.
Once you get into it, you'll find out that you have been sitting there playing for five hours (sometimes more ! well, a lot more ...) without even notice.
The graphics and music along the whole game are very well done.
oh ... yes, and I should say I'm a 30 years old girl :) ... you can never be too old for those games, aye ?

Best Civ Game EVER!

I can't emphasize enough how great this game is. I have played every version of all of the Civilization games (including Alpha Centauri) and this one is by far the best. It's obvious that Sid really took the time to make this one right. There are intelligent enhancements all across the board. Better still, the game is extremely stable. I haven't had a crash in over 50 hours of play. The most bug-free game I've played in a long, LONG time!

Great job!

This is the best strategy game ever -- always

I started looking at Civ2 years ago, and I have found that the Civ series is by far the best. The graphics have greatly improved; however its the strategy part and its million outcomes which makes this game so addictive. I have a cell phone version too, guess that puts me in the 'addict' category :)
My 10 year old started playing it, to understand civilizations and loves it now.

Terrific

I have been playing this series since the original one, and I have to say, I am in no way disapointed. Anyone who has played Civilisation 3 will feel right at home as soon as they start playing. However, they will quickly realise how many things have been improved. Resources have been redone as have tile improvments. The concept of Health has been added instead of requiring certain technologys to let you citys grow past certain numbers of people. Unhappiness has been simplified, and no more outright city rioting. Some wonders have been made so they are not so overpopwering (like the great library). The whole unit system has been made more intricate. For instance, in the modern era you can't just have a great modern armor sweep. You need planes to soften up, mech infantry to fortify, gunships to take out other tanks, fighters to protect everything, and perhapse some artileary for good measure. Overall, I think this Game has only gotten better since Civilsation 3, which was by far one of the best game I have ever played already.

I do not know why everyone is complaning so much about technical difficulties. I am using a computer that is aproaching its 4th birthday and I have only had lagginess, which was the same in Civilisation 3.

I recomend this game for every person who enjoyed Civilisation 3, and for thoes who are new to the series, I suggest you try it out, I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I have.

Sid Meier's Civilization IV

Sid Meier's Civilization IV~ Windows is a game that I have waited for since I bought Civ III and in many ways it is an amazing game. The inclusion of the religion, and the smarter worker units is good. However, I feel that there are still too few technologies and the realism factor is just not there. To be able to have tanks in the 1600's feels silly and to have internet in the 1800's feels even more so. I also wish they could enhence the diplomacy factor even more and raise the penalties for starting unprovoked wars. This sounds like I do not think this game is any good. This is simply not true. However, I think it has major flaws in the diplomacy, tech tree and realism department and I hope these issues are solved for the next release, Civilization V which will hopefully be realeased around 2008.

Why the bad reviews?

I dont know whats up with these medicore reviews, the game is so fun and addicting to play.
When I got it (my friend gave it to me as a christmass present the day before school started) I installed it and said I could not play it after 7 untill I got my homework done, 10:30 it was time for bed and still no homework done... Bad first day of school.
Everyday I find myself day-dreaming about playing this game, it is so addicting.
You can play the game at a much faster pace now, technological advances seem to be quicker to get, and money is not much a problem. It is easy to biuld up an economy, and biuld a friutfull and productive society to aid economic, cultural, and scienietific growth. I find myself in 1300 waging war with tanks and infantry agiants bows and arrows.
Religion adds a seemingly pointless, but fun, aspect of the game. Me being a christian and all I love creating a Christian state and spreading it around thw world, just for fun.
One of the things I love most is the new 3d map, I dont know how to explain it, its just so cool to see the map in 3d and to be able to zoom in on your cities and to zoom out to see a veiw of the globe and see you empire on it. I also like seeing suburbs an rural areas sprout up around you major cities, and the biuldings and improvments biult are visible on the map, thats cool too.
In all I would say dont let these mediocre reviews by die-hard Civ fans deter you, if your looking for something new, interesting, exciting, and guranteed to get you an F in all your classes, try this game.
