I want to amend my review just a tad. If you're new to the series, I would definitely get this title. Yes, the first few rounds feel like every other Civilzation title in the series. But once you get to the middle rounds, the addition of Religion and Great People definitely add a new component to the game. And the audio and graphics are amazing, which I think I forgot to mention below. Once you download the patch, the zoom function rocks. When you go to the most zoomed out level and scroll, the world revolves like a globe. Really cool. Here was my original review:
Yes the discs are mislabled, and yes some of the zoom features don't work, but other than that everything else runs fine for me, although I should add I haven't gotten to the end yet. But, technical issues notwithstanding, my main complaint with the game is that nothing major has changed. Oh, sure there are new religions and units and the micromanagement is lessened, but the gameplay still feels very similar. In the beginning you move around a few pieces exploring the map. You build a few new cities which eventually become unhappy for reasons you can barely control and you bump into other civs that all have better technology than you. Other than the fancy new graphics, I feel like I'm still playing Civ III, which felt an awful lot like Civ II. If you're new to the series and have the hardware that can support the game, then I would say consider buying this and would revise my rating to 4 stars. But if you already have Civ III then I would say don't bother.
Best of the CIV series

Bugs - Yes the game is a bit buggy. If you play for over 4 hours without shutting down the game it may crash. You need the latest Video Drivers. The CDs are mis-labeled.
Gameplay - Better then CIV III in every way. The game plays faster, there is less micromanagement, better AI.
If you liked any of the CIV games you need to get this one.

I went ahead and upgraded my ATI 9800 Drivers to the current drivers before installing Civ 4. Not a problem, not a crash, no horror stories, just an incredibly immersive game. I've played all the Civ iterations, and this one, with the addition of the Civics options, and the much more sophisticated Diplomacy makes it a winner.
I know people are honestly disappointed because of problems with the game not working on their systems, but I've always found that I have to keep a pretty clean system (defragged, registry maintained, windows and drivers updated, etc.) to assure consistent play with PC games in general.
This game has given me nothing but pleasure so far and I highly recommend it, just get your drivers updated before you install it, based on other reviews.
The interface is great, I've hardly had to refer to the manual at all, the rollover information, tips, and help are great decision-making tools, and this game is a lot more polished than many games I've seen come out over the years.
Congratulations to everyone involved.
Another Classic

The game is fun. If you like turn based strat games Civ IV is for you.
I have not had many of the video problems that others have had. I had 1 crash (wonder mini video) so I turned doew all the graphics to 'low'. I havent had an issue since. My system just meets the 'recommended' specs.
For those who have played Civ before, many of the strategies you have used before will work (although military conquest is much tougher now). Culture, Religion, and civics all become very important and can be used just as effectively as a strong military.
The updated graphics are cool (although they do take a bit of getting used to). Zooming in and scrolling will bog your system down unless you lower the graphics settings (*highly reccommended*) or you have a monster system. Mouse over context help is very good (shows resources for tiles, stats and upgrades for units, even showing you your chances to win a combat).
The military Unit upgrades are a great addition to the game as it now allows you to customize your troops (giving more attack strength, allowing your units to heal other units nearby, adding colateral damage to siege weapons, allowing troops to retreat more often), but watchout.....the AI is very good at customizing its troops.
Many have had issues with the graphics / sound in the game. I suggest you find a place that has a good return policy just in case you have one of these issues.
If you can avoid the install/graphic problems I highly reccommend Civ IV .
Overall, Very fun.

One of the best of all time in my opinion.
But...
While I understand much of your frustration with defective software, I don't believe that you have done this game justice in your review. Simply because of this mishap you have rated the game at 1 star. Yet you have not played the game. Yes the disc you recieved was defective. Or maybe it's your computer. Anyway, perhaps a "no vote" like in 04 would have been more proper.
When I saw that this game had a 2.5 star rating I was indignant. This is perhaps one of the top five games of all time and you have disgraced it. You have judged this game prematurely and incorrectly.
Had Ocarina of Time, or Final Fantasy 7 shipped defective as well, would you change your opinions and say they are no longer great games?
Leave the reviews to those that have played the game.

If you want nothing to get done, buy this game. Your kid will disappear for a good week without bothering you, except for food.

The overall game design seems better than civ3 with the addition of religion and a better balance cultural system than civ3. Here is the kicker tho The scenarios that ship with the game upto today 2/6/06 are pretty pathetic. The best one seems to be a small north african ww2 one. That compared to world scope ww2 and ww1 scenarios in civ 1 and 2 that are still readily available. BUY CIV 2 if you want a working game.
Also the game is very difficult to create mods and scenarios compared to civilization 2. And if you want to play on a premade map against the ai players it isnt going to happen you have to make a scenario which means you know where the ai civs will be since you have to place them.
I think that eventually someone will build a few good mods and scenarios but it could be years. In the mean time I guess I will play civ 2.
Not as good as the last one

wow... I'm pretty disappointed with this version of civilization. The graphics are superb in civ4 but the ability to actually see your units and "right-click" is all but gone. I still find myself lost in where my units actually are. The game play is constantly interrupted with your civilization needing direction and the AI borders on being mentally challenged. The positives are definitely the music, and the religions are a cool new aspect. Unfortunately, I am going back to playing civ3, which frankly plays much smoother and is visually better to understand.
Don't do it

I was a big fan of the Command and Conquer series, so I figured I'd enjoy this game. It's true, the graphics are great and there's a lot going on in the game, but I found the fun quickly expired as things became so redundant and nauseating. I enjoyed it for about a week before I couldn't deal with it anymore. The warfare aspect is totally unfulfilling. The "warriors" are all brain-dead and stand still while being hammered by the enemy. You cannot have coordinated attacks. It's one shot at a time, totally boring. Oh yeah, I can't even figure out how to uninstall it from my system. They don't provide a uninstall icon in the program file and I can't locate it in the "add/remove" programs tool.
Do yourself a favor and don't buy this game.
Perfect!!

Before buying this game, make sure that you have above the minimum requirements. I know a lot of people have had trouble with it. If you do have trouble, try downloading a patch, this worked for my sister.
This game is amazing! I've been playing Civilization since Civ 1 and this one is just great! The graphics are wonderful, but not over done as some have said. There are so many new wonders, units, civilizations, and concepts in this game. It took a little adjusting to but i love it! i would recommend this game to anyone. i started playing civilization when i was a young child (like 8 years old?) and would recommend it for children and adults alike. 5 stars!
