The Greatest Video Game of All Time

Civilization IV and it's Warlords expansion is the greatest video game of all time. Wage war, research technology, play political hardball, develop an economic system, and manage production -- all these things and more play their part in this game. It takes a while to understand all of the things at work in this game, but that is part of the fun. In fact I'm still learning new things and trying new strategies even though I've had this game since December.
In spite of all comments to the contrary, this game is a big step up from Civ III. Through simplificaton of some of the game's mechanisms, it has actually become a deeper game. Whereas in Civ 3 diplomacy often had a random feel to it, AI civs in this games have clear-cut reasons for liking or disliking you. The concepts of health and happiness have been simplified, taking away some of the mystery involved with these things in Civ III. Corruption makes a lot more sense now as well. Civics, religions and unique buildings are excellent additions. The new tile improvement system adds new depth to city management. The system of unit promotions allows for specialization of military units. The new combat system forces players to develop a balanced militaries - not just spamming your strongest offensive and defensive units. This game presents you with more "interesting decisions" to make than any other game I have ever played. There is one easy decision to make -- get this game.
Love the Humor!

I've played the new Civ 4 for a week now, and my favorite part are the sardonically humorous quotes as narrated by Leonard Nimoy of Star Trek fame.
Yes. This game has a few glitches, and I will only launch it on a clean boot. (If I have used another program before Civ 4, it crashes or the graphics start displaying noise.)
However, the game play is great. The graphics are gorgeous. The automation of workers has eliminated the repetitive strain I would get from earlier versions. The strategies are more subtle. Overall a good update.
Also think it is too buggy

Like many here I've been playing the Civ games since number 1. my machine meets all of the rec specs and I've installed the patch but I still have major crashes and freezes. My install and play discs are also mislabled. While that is a small thing, when you combine it with the obviously less than steller testing and QA, I think we should all get our money back and you can bet the house that I will not be rushing out to buy the next hot title Firixis puts out.
Excellent addition to civilization series!!!

Civ4 will make any previous civ player happy and new comers to the series.
You will not be disappointed.
Great user interface updates and 3d graphics. Game is very easy to play and additional new features are very welcome. The multiplayer is amazing. Get the 1.09 patch or greater if you have any game install or video problems. Works well on a P4 2.53 w/ GeForce 4 and a Insprion p4m 1.7.
A+

This game is a great game I must say to start off with. I've experienced barely any problems, and I have a SUPER budget comp.
I can also run everything on high and turn the aa on.
My Specs:
3.2 ghz Intel Celeron Processor
1.0 gig of Ram (pc3200)
ATI Radeon 9600xt Graphics Card
So yeah, my computer is far from super, and it runs flawless even on 1280x1024 with the anti-aliasing cranked up to the max.
Addictive & Fun!

This is an excellent game and an easy way to waste a day without knowing that time has passed! As a novice Civ player I was easily frustrated by Civ III but Civ IV is much more user friendly and definitely more fun. Highly recommended!
Love it, but might need a new computer

A bit sluggish on my 3yr old laptop, but I've still become predictably addicted as I have for each previous version.
Things I like.
-Civics options.
-Great people, you can really rev up a city using these.
-Graphics. I run mine at medium to speed it up a bit, but at high they are striking.
Things I don't like.
-can't even load the expansion pack or install the latest patch. Gives a fatal video error. I then had to reinstall without the patch.
-negotiations are a bit limited. For example, you can't trade a resource for a single chunk of money, only for gold/turn.
-As I said, a bit sluggish on my older computer.
Overall I really like the game and am looking forward to playing it (and the expansion) on my next computer.
Great potential but bugs/non working functionality constantly

I have been a huge fan of the Civ series ever since it started. This is the most advanced and well thought out version yet. It has great new features to help reduce the amount of time for admin tasks. The AI for admin tasks is also improved (Although I have seen workers resting with things to do and subs go in circles). The new unit enhancement features are great. All around this is the best designed version yet.
Know for the bad stuff.
Implementation is another story. I waited a couple of months after it was released because I heard it had problems installing and the code was not tested very well. I picked it up and tried installing, had to get a patch to install. Then downloaded version1.52 (Which says final release -I hope not). For the most part it is somewhat stable only crashed out 4 times in the many hours I have played it. The main issue is the interface on many things sometimes work and sometimes do not.
Sometimes you see the very helpful specs on units and building when you select them, sometimes not.
Sometimes you see background info on your cities, sometimes not.
Sometimes when you tell a piece to move it does, sometimes not.
Sometimes when you try to bomb something it does, Sometimes not(This last one I think is because there is a limit to bombing things; but it does not tell you this -Also you can not bomb roads which it does not seam to make sense but maybe it is supposed to be that way).
Sometimes it works when you change a setting in the options to have quick combat or show enemy moves, sometimes not.
Sometimes you can see city information while trying to make a decision on what to build in that city, sometimes not (without enlarging the city and going into the details).
I guess what I am trying to say is that I in learning the game I nearly quit playing because the new features do require an understanding that the little help tools give but if you can not see them the learning curve is not much fun. Sid, did a great job again but whoever released this beta version should get fired. I know I will be very hesitant to buy any more products from either Firaxis or 2KGames.
I love it

I thought this game was great. It had great graphics & a fun theme. Continued a great tradition of si meier's games. The only thing I don't like is I use the same strategy every game...get to this technology ASAP, then the next one ASAP, and so on, so it can get a little repetative from game to game. Otherwise I love it.
too bloated

I have a fairly powerful computer, however CivIV still runs pretty slowly. I liked the fact that they added new technologies, advances and wonders, but trying to learn about them from Civilopedia is extremely frustrating since the new graphic interface for it is far to crowded and often unintuitive. I was also disappointed because I did not find it to be any more fun to play than the previous version. New options are a good idea, but I wish the developers had realized that flashy graphics and movie clips have never been what made Civ a great and fun game to play. The best advice I can give is that if you want to buy it, make sure your system meets all the requirements, and read the reviews on bugs and problems people have had. In addition to the price of the game you may need to invest in a new graphics card in order to make it work properly.
