Too Addictive For Me

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 3

Lets just say if you looking to waste hours and hours away at the computer this is your game. Its so addictive, you will find yourself saying just one more turn in no time. The negative for me is that the scenarios are pretty bland and there never is really a rewarding finish to the game. But the aspect of gaining new technologies and resources is very fun. My only complaint is that the interface feels like a application at work and not like a traditional game. I guess thats what happens when you have some many things to micromanage. Overall I liked the game alot, but I don't want to play it anymore because its to time consuming.

Great Strategy Game

The fourth installment of this great series has a number of changes and improvements over previous versions. Of course the basic concepts remain the same. I'm not going to repeat a lot of what's already been said about this game but I will say that if you are 1)interested in really good strategy games which require a lot of thought and planning, 2) aren't obsessed with the latest and greatest graphics, 3)have a reasonably long attention span then you should give Civ IV a try.

Addictive, fun and.... IT RUNS ON PYTHON!!!

I loved civ 3, but it had many innacurate problems in the technologic scale but now with civ 4 all is solved. It's not broke down to communism or capitalism, now it separates every single aspect from religion, goverment, economy etc. etc. There is way, way more ways to play it than previous version which it's exciting if you have played previous versions but it can be overwhelming if this is the first time you play it. Now for the best thing ever is the fact this game is more modable than previous versions. If you know python you can create your own civilization, change rules or come up with new ones. I can wait for someone to comeup with a star wars mode. People are uploading their modes that you can download for free in the civ4 website. I love civilization and I know python so I'm really happy with this game.

Great if you can use it

This game is great for a variety of reasons, it's easy to learn, hard to master, completly modifiable (it's completly coded in easially accessable XML, and it's pretty simple to figure out how to edit things), and it's fun. With the patch there are very few bugs, but if you have a weak computer, don't even attempt it.

This game may say that you only need 256MB of RAM, don't attempt running it with that much, don't attempt with anything less then 1GB memory. Seriously, it will just fruisturate you. Also, make sure you have a decent video card. Running on anything integerated will not be good, don't try it. If you have anything less then a 2.8GHZ P4, or an equivlent processor, don't attempt, it'll just annoy you. It requires a real hell of a PC to get it to work.

One feature I really like about the game is that there is a little background information about everything in the game, all the technologies (and there's probabally around 100 technologies) civilizations, leaders, units, civics (BTW, there's over 3,000 different combinations for a government) and several other things. I might have liked a little more but I really like it that there was some there.

This is not only a great way to have fun, it's also a fun way to learn a tid-bit about history.

Best Civ game yet, but they need to keep the patches coming.

I have been a Civ addict since Civ 1, back in the day. I have played each Civ game thoroughly. Civ 4 is by far the best of the series, HOWEVER, there are still issues with the game, from my own experience, and from things I have read online.
First off, please make sure you have more than the minimum requirements to run this game. If you do not, the game will not be much fun. I have a 3 year old Sony VAIO with 1 gig RAM, 128MB nVida GeForce video card, Pentium 4 at 2.53 Ghz. Everything I have is "above" the minimum system requirements. The game runs pretty ok, as long as I keep the graphics to "medium."

After the first patch came out, I noticed some difference, but not many. I was still able to play the game, and also played some online games.

After this second patch came out (ver 1.52 I think), the game runs pretty good, but as soon as I try to play online, it locks the computer up and I have to manually turn it off and reboot it. It looks as though this second patch has some flaws, and from what I read online, other people are having the same problems after installing the patch. So, hopefully they will come out with a patch to fix the patch -

On the plus side, the graphics are beautiful, the game play is nuch faster and more fun than Civ 3.
I recommend this game to anyone, beginners and old pros like myself. Just keep checking for patches and updates if you get it.

The game is fun = 5 stars, but until the online bugs get worked out, I only rate the game overall as 4 stars.

Here's an update, 1/8/06 - they must have done something with the patch or the GameSpy website (the site the game uses for online multiplayer). My game now works great, online and offline. I still would recommend having more than the minimum requirements, but I will change my rating to 5 stars for fun, and 5 stars overall.

Beware of ignormaus reviews on this game

Don't listen to a number of negative ratings here some of which are claiming to be programmers, game developers etc. If they are so, then I am Bill Gates.

Civilization is if not the best, one of the best strategy games ever made. And the only game ever that has gone better with every new version.

WHY? Because It's original maker has stayed with development, design and programming since it was first released as Civilization, in 1991. This genius, Sid Meier is not only an intellectual and has deep understanding of history of nations, but is also a gifted game developer.

The game has a somewhat steep learning curve and was buggy on first release, but after patches and expansions, anyone that can take the time and has the brains to really learn the game, will really love the game.

Multiplayer is a blast, and online rooms provide an abundant environment to find any kind of game, including ladder and tournament games.

Absolutely awesome!!!

I have never written a review before, but could not believe the low average number of stars given this game. I understand that some people have had some technological problems with this game, and I have to confess that I had to go out and buy a new, high-powered laptop in order to play this game. A lot of people (including myself with my former computer) seem to have problems because they do not have a good enough graphics card.

All that aside, once you get the game working, it is absolutely brilliant! I have been playing Civ games for about six years now. I enjoyed Civ II and Civ III. But I think Civ IV is a massive improvement over the prior versions. From reading a couple of the reviews, it sounds like some people are too hung up on how the game does not necessarily match all of the details of historical accuracy in some respects. For me, none of that changes the fact that the game is a real blast to play. Very addictive and infintely replayable. Each time I play through a game, I learn different nuances of gameplay. There are numerous different strategies to consider at all stages of game play, depending on your civilization's strengths and special unit. I play at Monarch level now, which is plenty challenging. And yes, the AI still cheats like anything (but then, sometimes, so do I, particularly after the AI hits me with one of those devastating surprise sneak attacks . . .).

This really is an amazing game, and fully deserves five-plus stars.

A great improvement on an already stellar series.

If you liked Civ 2, this game will make you very, very happy. The somewhat disappointing aspects of Civ 3 (culture etc.) have been ironed out and the new additions (religion etc.) are pleasing. Specifically, things like the CxC placement strategy and late game milking have been made more difficult so the game is more about playing well to score well. Units can now stand on top of other civs' units during peacetime, which is a useful tweak, making for much easier troop movements. The tech tree is better structured and one can now investigate entire branches without ever touching others. That is, technologically it is now possibly to focus militaristically or economically or culturally etc. The addition of religion adds a necessary extra element to the game. Although many users will be irritated that all religions function in the same way, the surprisingly large modding community has already released several tweaks to make them more unique. My favourite improvement though has to be the combat system. No longer do units have attack and defence but now have a single "strength" number and are given bonuses to make unit oppositions more realistic. Spearman get a +100% bonus against mounted units for example.

Overall, well worth the money to any fan of TBS or the Civ series.

Improved over Civ3

Pros:

-Improved graphics and zoom in on battles

-improved diplomacy and a clearer list on where you stand and why with other civs.

-improved border system so other civs can't sneak in odd towns in middle of your territory without your permission

- religion system is interesting and making missionaries to "convert" is addictive. Alliances can form based on religion.

- wonder videos are back! But not as good as the ones in civ2 were.

- nice soundtrack

- Less tedious than civ3, automated workers are smart, and so are city managers so you don't have to deal with riots and making entertainers.

- UN system implemented much like the one we loved in Alpha Centauri.

- can get updates directly in game now by clicking a button and don't have to visit website.

- lot of interesting special leaders spawn now not just military.

Cons:

- diplomacy can still be frustrating at times, though other civs are more reasonable in deals and alliances it's still impossible at times to "get along" no matter how many bribes and other concessions you make.

- The release version bogs down terribly in the end game, due to weird lag.

- The start up screen is not as user friendly as civ3 was, there are no pics of leaders and lack of detail.

- golden ages are not as spectacular as in civ3

- not many scenarios yet. I miss conquests!

Overall with some conquest type scenarios and the lag bug fix this will be wonderful game that lasts a long time.

Best civ game yet.

I just played a full game and encountered no bugs. You got to have the recommended system requirements for this game however. I got a Geforce FX 5600, 2gig processor (AMD 3000) and 1.5 gigs of ram. The last being the most important.

As far as the game goes, they added lots of small and large improvements, here are a few:

1. The wonder movies are not great but ok, same for the sound track.
2. You manage fewer cities in this game but I found that managing many cities in civ 3 became overwhelming so this is a plus.
3. Resources are no longer as much as a problem as they were in civ3. For example the railroad doesn't let you travel just anywhere anymore but up to 10 spaces so if you can't get coal you are not dead in the water.
4. The wonders are not as important as in the last civs but still useful.
5. The maps are about the same size as they were in civ3 but the biggest improvement is that the map don't have to have an ocean on them. Maps of lakes or of all land is are possible (I hope a mars map like the one in civ2 comes out).
6. Instead of having to take a government as a whole, you can set any or the 6 parts of it to what you desire.
7. Religion also make a difference in the game, in that is enables you to make an extra citizen happy and thus one more person working land which is a big plus in the early game. If you wanted to reenact to crusades just pick up the christen religion and declare war.

All in all Sid pick out the best aspects for past games and put them all into civ4 and add a few more.

I played on a standard map and had no real slow down as the game progressed so I plan on playing on a huge map the next time. I would recommend just playing the game with the default number of computer players or you may never find yourself at war. One can play on different kinds of maps, different diffculity levels and/or different numbers of computer players making this game very much so replayable!

All in all: If you like turn based games then this one is a must, all be it a bit expensive
