The gameplay on Silent Hill 2 has some truly creepy moments. Not necessarily scary in a shock value type of way, but unsettling. It sets the mood quite well. The upsides of the game are the mood and a reasonably fun plot to sift your way through. No reason to go through it all here. Lots of walkthroughs are online already. Individual people are well rendered and monsters are wonderfully disturbing in their appearance and behavior. Puzzles vary well in difficulty depending on the level, but none are so hard that you'll pull your hair out or give up.
There are a few downsides, though. Although the graphics are relatively well done, the non-working sections of the game, such as furniture, building fronts, etc., seem too 2-dimensional. The game is quite linear, forcing you to go down certain roads, do things in a certain order. While this is sometimes necessary to this type of game, it's quite pronounced in SH2. My main problem with this game is the controller. It feels like it was lifted straight from an arcade stick arrangement. James is a real pain in the backside to move around efficiently using just one stick and the occasional button. The game takes no advantage of the Xbox controller's full capabilities. I must be a bit spoiled by Halo, which has a superb controller setup. Konami should be taking notes. One last thing that is truly annoying is the view angle that keep shifting at random (and usually quite inopportune) moments. Just a constant view of what James is looking at would be preferable to the existing arrangement. The left trigger, which is supposed to shift to this view, only works some of the time. Most of the rest of the time, you're watching James, not the creepy scenery... and the creepy scenery IS worth watching.
Overall, if you can overcome a low-grade controller setup and not a lot of flexibility, the game does provide a lot of player enjoyment and I would recommend it, though not for young children.

Not my kind of game

This isn't necessarily a bad game, but I found the difficult controls and awkward fighting to be annoying. Fans of Max Payne, Halo, and other games of that ilk should consider renting this game before buying it.

I got my kid who's 9 an X-Box for christmas and he loves it. He had the PS1 and enjoyed Silent Hill, a Resident Evil style thriller. Little did I know when I went out and got him Silent Hill 2, sure it scares him to death but he loves it, this was not the case however. One night I was watching him play like every other night, because it's a M 18+ game I like to supervise him. Then I realised it was really quite appaling. There were constant blurrs, bads graphics and poor cut-scenes if any. I playing but it was still awful even in the 'best' parts of the game. take it form me, no way you'll buy this!

Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams is different than many other of the series. Silent Hill 3 tries to catch more intensity, trying to catch the players attention and makes them want to play more. Silent Hill 4 was just scary and was very dramatising. Silent Hill 2 caught drama and made a story so good it is still in people minds and hearts today.

When I first heard about Silent Hill 2 for Xbox, I was intrigued. Depending on which review I read, I expected either a puzzle/riddle game in the vein of the later installments of "Zork" for PC, or maybe an action/shooter game.

Guess what? Silent Hill is neither!

There is good news, though: the backgrounds, atmosphere, and sounds could have been created by Kafka. The bad news: Kafka also designed the gameplay. For example, when you enter a room and are surprised by a waiting zombie, you must lash out blindly, because there isn't enough room for the camera perspective to get behind you and show you what you're fighting.

Even just walking around, managing the camera perspective is a constant fight. Left becomes right, up becomes down as you struggle for the camera angle to stay consistent. Perhaps this is a good thing, because you can actually explore only a tiny percentage of the game environment. With the confusing camera angles, you may end up walking in circles, believing Silent Hill is much bigger than it actually is. More likely, however, you'll just check the map every few seconds to make sure you're not turned around.

Other disappointments: you'll play for an hour before you see your first "riddle", and it's a rather weak one at that. Most of the so-called riddles involve finding the complete solution (to a combination lock, for example), then hiking through endless deserted corridors to use it. Doors that were previously unlocked on you journey back may mysteriously lock themselves, or vice versa.

If you can borrow this game, or buy it used for no more than [$$$], you may get 10 hours of semi-enjoyment/frustration out of it. Otherwise, play some Halo (the only truly worthwhile game on the entire Xbox platform), and wait for something better to come along.

I like it a lot

This was my first attempt at the horror genre. The game is certainly creepy, and has some great scenes, but I didn't find it captivating at all. The game was just too slow. The plot was on the corny side, but it had a few nice surprises. I think the biggest problem was that you couldn't just spend an hour here and there for this game. It required large chunks of time to really get into it. Too bad, because it looked like it had potential.

Spooky

This is a very good game for the X-Box amoung other systems. The graphics and FMV sequences are well done and move the story along well. When I started playing this, it was a bit spooky for me, but I warmed up to it. In full 5.1 digital sound mode, the sounds come from everywhere, and can unsettle you a bit. The violence level is really not that bad, I mean you are fighting ghouls, not people, and it is not the main funtion of the game. The game is a puzzle, and on moderate levels, not an extrodinarily hard one, but it will take you quite a while to get through it. You will not be disappointed.

It's an ok game

First I would like to state that if you are one of those people who like to start a game & be able to get into it right away then this game is not for you. This game takes too long to get you involved & after a while of playing the game I just got bored with it because you have to do everything in order basically to be able to get anywhere in the game which makes beating it very tedious. I thought the game sounded good but after I bought it I realized it wasn't for me (one of those types of people who like action all the way through the game no matter what happens) I would have to say that this game has great graffix & a great storyline so if you are the kind of person that likes to sit down for hours at a time to figure out games & puzzles then maybe this game is your kind of game. But for the fact that it takes too long (in my mind) to get involved in the game & takes a lot to keep you involved then I will have to give it a 3
