XBOX and Battlestar

Just played the first few missions and I love the game. Gameplay is smooth and graphics are excellent. The cut scenes add nicely to the game. Some of the music is taken right from the series and sounds great!
If you liked BattleStar in the 70's get this game. If you like good Space combat Sims.. get this game!

A stocking filler if ever there was one!

Control is excellent, game play is smooth. It's like going back in time to the 70's and being part of the TV show, but better.

Well-designed space shooter

I enjoy a good space shooter even though I'm not particularly good at them (I admit that I couldn't get through the first space mission in Star Wars: Starfighter without using a cheat). This is definitely a good one. Graphics are very nice. One thing I like is that you don't feel like you're just floating in space; you feel like you're actually flying. Hitting a turbo boost really feels like you're hitting a turbo boost. The ship controls are excellent, and targeting is easy and intuitive. The ability to customize and tweak your missiles for optimum performance/energy use adds a nice amount of gameplay depth.

For an extra challenge try the in-cockpit view. It's harder because your view is partially obstructed by the cockpit, and your field of view is limited to what you see through the windshield, but it really does feel like you're piloting the Viper. It makes the game feel even more like Starlancer for the Dreamcast, which is one of the best console space shooters of all time (and was also developed by Warthog).

The major complaint I have with this game is one that I'm sure many will share: the lack of save points during missions. You will often make it through all but the last level of a multi-level mission only to fail the objective of the last level and have to start over all the way at the beginning of the entire mission. This is an irritating flaw in an otherwise well-designed game and adds an unnecessary level of frustration to the game, expecially for those of us who are not especially gifted at space shooters (like me). If there were checkpoints within levels, I would give it at least an extra 1/2 star. As it is, it's still an excellent game that's worth checking out if you're a fan of the license or a fan of the space shooter genre.

Awesome but frustrating

If you are a fan (like myself) of the series, then this game is a must have. While I love Star Wars, I always thought the Vipers and the Battlestars were better looking than x-wings and Star Destroyers. The graphics in this game are excellent, and with the soundtrack, digitally captured sound effects, and the evil Cylons popping up on your com channel to tell you how futile it is to resist, the game is great fun. You really feel like you are piloting a Colonial Viper Mark II, especially when you "kick in your turbos" and the KSHWOOOOOSH sound and vapor trails blast you off.
The only downside is the lack of a save game feature. The game will automatically save for you at certain points, but that point might be at the end of a five stage level. Guess what happens if you die on the last stage of a 45 minute long adventure? YOU GET TO START ALL OVER AGAIN FROM THE BEGINNING. Trust me, this will make you want to shoot your television with a 12 guage shotgun. Much frustration and property damage could have been prevented with a simple "quicksave" option.
All in all the game is awesome, especially for fans of the old show, and soon to be premiered new show, as the game blends them both together. Hopefully, somebody will come up with some cheats or walkthroughs to help you through the game, as it took me a long time to get past phase 3 of mission 1, "watch your buddies backs", which is reminiscent of the frustrating and nearly impossible "protect the transports" from Star Wars: X-Wing. If you can remember that game, take your "shoot the screen with shotgun" factor and triple it.

Very Realistic!

The game is awesome. Unlike many of the cartoonish space games out there, this one looks and feels like you are in space and flying a viper. What I would have given to have had something similar as a kid. The sound effects are just like on the shows and the graphics are excellent. The Galactica and vipers are as the original series, but as you advance you begin to see cylons ships resembling the newer mini-series that is currently airing. It is a perfect blend of the two. The cylons periodically speak and sound fantastic and you also get to pilot a cylon ship. Keeping in formation with them so they don't detect you ain't easy. The first level is quite dark because of course you are in space and can only see what light is reflecting on. This adds to the realistic feel, but created some frustration for me as I wanted a clearer view of the ships around me. I felt somewhat like what a novice pilot must feel, a lot of controls, not sure which is which and couldn't see much around me. However, you quickly adapt. As you move through levels it is not always dark, especially when you are fighting around a planet which reflects alot of light. I found the controls a bit awkward at first. Most controls perform double or tripple functions forcing you to tap once or twice or hold down, depending on what you need, but you do quickly learn. Still in difficult encounters requring quick reflexes you can easily get confused. This adds to the excitement/frustration. I Still have a little trouble with the thrusters, you have to tap twice to execute and tap twice and hold to sustain them. When executed these are awesome!! You also get to control multiple guns on the Galactica itself, loved it. The only real complaint I have is the lack of saves. You have to work through three minilevels to complete one save. This is very frustrating when you work through to the last only to get destroyed in the last few minutes of play and have to start all over again. Still for any Galactica fan, this is a must have. I hope it inspires further Galactica collectibles and games.

difficult but fun

This is a fun shooting game: You have a number of missions flying your viper against waves of cylon fighters and attacking cylon base ships, as well as operating the guns on the Galactica herself. The missions are multi-stage and tend to be very difficult, requiring frequent restarts. The game is all about flying and shooting as fast as you can. There are some cut scenes which unfortunately are rather shallow. This is a fun game for a fan of the series, but lacks the depth of games like Star Wars KOTOR.

Offensive and Crippling Gameplay...

Players are dissuaded from either repeat play or reaching that rare trance-like state of "play till the sun comes up" frame of mind. This game provides no save features and if you're unfortunate enough to die just short of completing the level? Too bad. You just wasted 30 minutes of your life and have nothing more than sore and aching thumbs to show for it. For example, the first "level" is four challenges. I've lost track of how many times I've completed all four challenges (mostly three of the four) only to die short of my end reward, the cut scene. The last time being the most frustrating since I "blew up" what was required but was too close to affect an adequate retreat. Ture hardcore console gamers may not find this unsurmountable. But I have a family to feed and work.

Speaking of cut-scenes. There a few more spectacular and enjoyable to watch for a "Galactica" fan than those on this disc. That's why I bought the game, but unfortunately I may not be able enjoy all the hard work they put into them. I have a feeling that this game will languish on my shelf if I can't get past the first level after two days of playing.

looks good but repetative and not enough saves

I was looking forward to this game since I was a fan of the show when it first aired. I expected a progression of difficulty as the missions progressed but it was difficult from the initial mission. Does the game have any savepoints?

Great Game

This game is excellent especially if you were a fan of the original tv series back in 1979/1980.

Game engine and graphics are very fluid and the sounds are exact to the series. Sound nice through surround sound. Very fast pace with a lot going on at once. At times overwhelming to say the least.

I have two complaints. Game is a prequel to the original tv series (I dont know about you but....im kinda getting tired of prequels) so you cant play as Starbuck or Apollo. My second complaint is that this is not avalible for the PC :(

You can play from inside the cockpit, So it feels more like a Sim then arcade. In 1980 I was 10 years old. I have been waiting 23 years old to fly one of these babies!! Game is must have for any true fan!
