Fun Casual Golfing - Missing a Few Real Golf Features

Intriguingly, Super Swing Golf Wii is an example of an online, free multi-player game porting to a console and becoming a single player sports game. Known either as Albatross 18 or Pangya in its online world, the Super Swing Golf version for the Wii is strictly off-line.
In this Wii variation, there is a little bit of plot, but it really doesn't matter. You're on the fictional island of Pangya and there are evil forces at work. Really, this game is just about choosing a character, choosing a caddy, and playing golf.
There are a variety of courses to play on - you start with a few options, and more become available as you go. There are cool variations - snowy courses with icy lakes, desert courses where you hit through pyramid areas, rainy courses, cloudy courses, fairy tale courses. You can play tournament style and match play. There is a training mode to help you get started.
As you play well, you earn Pangya Points, which you then spend in the store. You can buy yourself new outfits, clubs, items and more. Each gives you some sort of benefit - more strength, higher accuracy, and so on. Some are special one-time-use items that let you calm down the wind, see visually how your putt will work, and other neat features.
The graphics are reasonably nice - it's obviously cartooney, but you see what you need to in order to play. The greens are shown with a grid full of dots, with the dots representing the slope of each specific grid. It works, although it's not as helpful as other golf games in determining slope. The camera views - showing overhead and target views of your shots - are OK, but again, other games provide much more complete fly-overs and detailed layouts of the hole you're playing.
From a golf point of view, the game isn't very accurate, either. When you swing, you literally bring your Wii remote up and then stop, waiting until you get to the right spot on the swing-o-meter. You press the button and then swing down through to hit the shot. It's very unnatural. The swing should be all one fluid motion and the game should know when you reach the top of your swing by itself.
Also, the pars set for some of the courses are nonsensical. A par should always assume you need two putts to sink the ball into the hole. The game doesn't do that - some pars seem almost randomly assigned.
Still, this game really isn't aimed at real golfers who want to practice their skills. It's aimed at casual players who aren't worried about accuracy - but who want fun watching their balls send out fireworks as they fly. While I don't see why a game can't be fun *and* accurate, I accept that game developers make odd decisions sometimes when making their games. For example, why do they have numerous "concept art" unlockables of barely teen girls in bikinis? How does this relate to golf? The mind boggles.
Fun enough to play with up to four players in your home, or single player, but do remember that this doesn't go online - and that it's not going to be as good as other golf games if you're looking for a realistic golfing experience. Well recommended for casual fun sports play.
Wait for another golf game.

I'm am not a golfer, however, my family and I LOVE the golf mini-game in Wii Sports. So to get a greater fix I purchased this game. Unfortunately this game is not nearly as fun as the Wii Sports version.
Aside from the lame story (which I can forgive), the control scheme feels very much like they slapped the Wiimotes abilities on top of a "button masher". For example, in Wii Sports Golf the power of your swing is determined by the force of your swing, in SSG you sloooooowly rock your arm back and press a button to "set" the power. This takes a HUGE element of fun out of the game in my opinion. This game might be fun on a traditional console but a Wii game it is not.
I plan on trading this one in, save your money for a future golf game that more closely mimics Wii Sports natural flow.
Confusing and not for a real golf fan

I rented this game before I bought it and I'm glad that I did. My husband and I are both golfers and love the Wii Golf game that comes with the system. So we thought this would be fun too.....NOPE
It is really confusing, especially if you are used to the Wii Sports Game. And we had a hard time getting anything to load correctly. Finally we gave up becuase it just didn't make much sense to us.
Great game!

This game is great if you take the time to get used to the controls. You get points based on performance and you can use those points to buy items like different sets of golf clubs and clothes unique items that can affect gameplay. There are tons of courses and several different modes of gameplay. This game is very deep. As for controls you can swing the remote or use buttons like in a traditional golf video game. This game has quickly became one of my favorites.
Stupid Game and a waste of money....

The free golf game that came with the system was a blast and so I thought I'd try this game. This game wouldn't be worth my time if it were free. It is a waste of time, has nothing to do with the real game of golf, isn't fun, and doesn't work well.
This thing should not be for sale, never mind $50. Avoid this garbage game at all cost.

As a multiplayer game it beats Wii Sports Golf, that's the nicest thing I can say. TECMO missed a great opportunity here to merge "real" golf aspects with all the fun obstacles of Mini-Golf in a fantasy 3D environment that would never be possible in the real world. From the demo videos that's what Super Swing Golf appears to be, but it's not. It's a generic golf game that uses generic anime characters and a rough story line to try and bring golf to the Wii.
Unless you just really love Wii Sports Golf and want something a little better, pass on this until it hits the bargain rack. It's just not an A list kind of game.

I did not have any problems with the controls or understanding how to control this game or the Wii Sports game. I am also a big fan of Mario Toadstool Golf for the Gamecube, so I was pretty sure of what to expect. I admit that Toadstool golf is easier, but I find this game to be very enjoyable. I play with my daughters - and Eight, Ten and 12 year old. They all seem to have no issue grasping the concept and controls. It is challenging, especially on the green, were almost every putt seems to curve unpredictably, but will time I think we will be able to compensate for this. We have played it for about 20 hours now in total, and I think that the general concise in my Family is that its a winner...The love earning points to by stuff for their characters!

Tecmo brang the popular PC online golf title "Pangya" or "Albatross18" as its called in the US to consoles for Wii. This version is based on story modes and local multiplayer as it has no online though. The gameplay is along the lines of Hot shots or Mario Golf with added features. The most noticable is the swing, you now actually get to swing to determine your shots accuracy. It works flawlessly, is a lot of fun, but also takes some skill to do perfectly(keep in mind you can also use the old button swing method if you liked that). Super Swing Golf also blows any other golf games away in terms of style of courses. You'll be golfing in all kinds of evironments from your traditional course to winter areas, deserts, on battle cruisers, and many more. Some other features not common in a golf game are the RPG elements. You can buy new clubs, clothing, and golf balls and level up each item as well as your character. Speaking of items I beleive this is the only golf game to include in-game items. You have various items to use in play such as "miracle sign" which displays the balls expected path during a putt, "silent wind", "nerve stabalizer" and other 1 time use items. The only downside the game may have is CPU opponents are very hard later in the game. You may have to go through a lot of rematches to win.
I just picked the game up 5 days ago and got 16 hours into it, its that good

Another review said that the nicest thing they can say is that this game is better than Wii sports golf. I can't even say that. It has more depth that the Wii sports game, but generally is not as good.
This game is loaded with features, though you would never know that when you start the game. You unlock EVERYTHING, of course that also means that when you start the game you have nothing. You start with ONE playable character. (Hey, at least start us out with like 2 people to pick from.) After a round you get points and with those points you can buy clothing, people, etc... The clothing system is great. Many items give your attributes an increase, so it can be a bit like an RPG where you have the gloves of +1 accuracy.
Also, if you have enough Pangya (I have no idea if I am correctly using that phrase) you get to choose from special shots. However those shots are not as good as a normal shot.
For some reason putting is extremely difficult. Not technically a knock on the game, but I can drive without any problems.
The biggest problem with the game is its control system. It only half uses the Wii's motion sensing. You do a backswing & freeze. You then hit a button to lock in the speed of your shot. You can then swing at any speed and it goes at the predetermined speed. The (comparatively) shallow Wii sports has you swinging the way you would in the real world (i.e. the reason they got you to buy the Wii in the first place). If I wanted to hit a button when I wanted to swing I would look to the last-gen systems.
This game does have far more courses than Wii Sports, but the control scheme is a sticking point. I can overlook the tough putting and other strange little things in the game, but if you are pushing a button to control your swing speed, instead of a full wind up and swing, then why bother with the Wii? Play some old Tiger Woods games if you are into that.
