Gun missing, but fun nonetheless...

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 13 / 13

I received Silent Scope for Christmas. I'm a huge fan of the arcade game and its sequel, so I was a little apprehensive about playing it without the sniper rifle. I keep reading all of these complaints about having no gun, but get over it already...you knew when you bought the game that there would be no gun, so it couldn't have been THAT big a surprise. That being said, Konami has done an excellent job of creating a control scheme for the standard game controller that doesn't take away (too much) from the game experience.

Graphically speaking, I'm surprised that Konami decided to launch this one with the PS2. Its graphics don't astound...to be honest, I found the graphics in Time Crisis to be better. However, the graphical quality doesn't take away from the game, so, kudos to Konami. The sound in this game is made up of little more than gunshots and voice instruction from the game.

Gameplay, if you can get over the absence of the sniper rifle, is good. Not great, but still good. Let's get this straight, the reason that no sniper rifle shipped with this game is that the arcade machine utilizes two processors. One is for the big screen, and the other is for the screen in the rifle's scope. Could you imagine what the cost would be for a lightgun with its own processor?

Back to gameplay. The learning curve on this game is about five minutes. It'll only take you slightly longer to finish this game. If longevity is something you look for in your video games, steer clear of this one. If you pick it up in the morning, you could conceivably have it licked by dinner. However, there is something to be said for the feeling of satisfaction you get when you put a bullet in to the forehead of a baddie at 500 meters...something I'll never tire of. The game also includes a training section and several firing range variants to keep you occupied.

I do really like this game. I've gotten past the fact that there is no gun. The controller works fine for this game, and could serve as a model for other developers who want to bring their more complex gun games to console. Granted, this game is not going to please everyone, but even if you don't buy it, it does make a solid rental.

KUDOS TO KONAMI

HAVING JUST PLAYED A LOT OF SILENT SCOPE (1 & 2) WITH MY SON UP AT THE BEACH, ALL I CAN SAY IS, KONAMI HAS DONE AN EXCELLENT JOB OF CONVERTING THIS ARCADE CLASSIC TO THE PS2 CONSOLE (AND ON-TIME FOR LAUNCH, NO LESS). NOW I CAN PLUNK THE BAD GUYS FROM THE COMFORT OF MY COUCH INSTEAD OF ON MY FEET, HUNCHED OVER THE SNIPER RIFLE. NOW, ABOUT THE RIFLE (OR LACK THEREOF), SO WHAT? I DON'T MISS HAVING TO PLUG IN (OR BUY) YET ANOTHER PERIPHERAL INTO YET ANOTHER SYSTEM. SO STOP WHINING ABOUT IT. KONAMI HAS DONE A GREAT JOB OF MAKING IT SO THAT YOU CAN USE EITHER THE D-PAD (BETTER CONTROL) OR THE JOYSTICK (FASTER TARGETING). EVEN THE TRAINING OPTIONS ARE FUN TO PLAY. REMEMBER, EXCEPT FOR BOSSES, ONE SHOT, ONE KILL.

THIS GAME RULES!

this has to be the best game ever made. I feel that the only drawback of this game will be that fact that you dont have an actual gun scope to look through, otherwise, this is a definite best seller. :)

This games is a must have. If you are like me, and you spent all of your time in Metal Gear running around with the sniper rifle, you will love this game. It is extremely fast paced and exciting. There aren't many stages but it is awesome! Buy it if you love to look through a scope and sniper away.

Just to start: I love the arcade game, it's the biggest gun innovation since Operation Wolf. I think the biggest thrill is the scoped gun, and was eagerly waiting to see what Konami was going to do with the port. This is what I found on the Bulletin board at the Konami website (notice it's written by someone from Konami):

>RE: Silent Scope gun? >Author: tako (---.konami.co.jp) >Date: 07-07-00 17:48 > >Hi folks, >I am sorry to say that there is no gun for Silent Scope. There >are many reasons for this, but the simple one is that it would be >too expensive to do for the home market. >In the arcade, Silent Scope has to use 2 processors. One for the >game screen and one for the scope in the gun. A simillar sort of >set-up would need to be done in the gun or share the processing >power of the main chip in the PS2 or DC to do this. Which causes >slow-down. Also information has to be relayed back from the >screen and the gun all the time to track where it is being fored >at, not like your standard light gun, which only fires off a >signal when the trigger is pulled. > >In any case, getting back to the expense, putting in a chip in >the gun and having a screen in the gun, ie a LCD one that is >color and would need resolution that is better than a Gameboy, >would become a really expensive piece of equipment. > > Sorry about that folks, > > tako

I still might get the game, though...

Who cares about the arcade version, this one rocks.

This game is highly addictive and fast paced. The system starts you off in different areas within the same level and allows you to choose different paths to take within the level. This compensates for the 6 levels easily. I think the only people that would give this game a bad review are those that cannot pass the levels because they are too slow or keep whining about not having a gun to do it with. Buy this game and enjoy.

Snipers, a way to end a show down

I have played this game at an arcade and all I came say is "wow!". This game is a little hard at first but when you get the hang of it it's quite simple. Time is a major factor and if you lose time that's it game over. The levels are fun and at the arcade there was a shootout mode and that was really cool.

A bit difficult to get used to, nevertheless fun

I bought this game when I picked up my PS2 on launch day, and I was a bit disappointed the first time I played it but it took time to get used to. While the graphics and sound are good, they are of PS1 quality. I loved the arcade version, but the PS2 version is a bit difficult to get used to as you use the controller to move the reticle, much like the old Area 51 game for PS1 (I guess it would have cost a bit more to include a scoped HK PSG-1 rifle with a cable to hook it to the console). I expected a lot more from a game for the state of the art gaming system, but its still fun. Just save your money till the price drops a bit.

THIS GAME IS ONE OF THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have played this a billion times in an arcade and I thought it would be terrable on ps2, but it is in a word AWESOME.
----------------------------------------
In this game you play a role as a anti-terrorist sniper and the missions are just perfect, it also gives you a realistic effect
for example: If you shoot somebody either in the legs or head and they are on top of a building they will fall off!
----------------------------------------

One of the more interesting things is the fact that the enemy snipers will see you if you shoot close to them and miss.
----------------------------------------
I have only played one other game as cool and it is Grand Theift Auto 3 but this game is still very cool!
----------------------------------------
Another GREAT concept is that you get a on-screen-scope so it zooms in for easier shooting.

----------------------------------------
I recommend some sort of laser gun controller with this game but
it still RULES without one!
----------------------------------------
Over all this game is very good and is a definate buy, so good luck and happy hunting :)
