The Best Ridge Racer Yet

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 9 / 18

I own the Japanese import and i must say this is by far the best Ridge Racer Yet.Ridge Racer V is a fun, great-looking game that will please older Ridge Racer fans.If you have Played other Ridge Racer Games you might be disspointed on how the game handles. The sound effects in Ridge Racer V are pretty nice. The squealing tires and engine noise of the cars sound realistic.A Must have Game for your PS2.

Average Game - Nothing New To The Series

I too own the import of this game and while it certainly has flashy graphics it's very shallow and has nothing significantly different from Ridge 4.

One ironic thing is that the first track is the exact same track from the first Ridge Racer game. When you play it you think, "Wow, it looks almost exactly the same as the original", that's how lackluster the track graphics are.

There are also frequent and distracting problems with the game flickering, and the game is nearly impossible to play split screen.

I'd recommend Gran Turismo 2000 or Metropolis Street Racer on Dreamcast over this one.

Aliasing is not Namco's fault

The aliasing observed in this game is an artifact of the PS2 and not the Namco game that runs on it. We'll have to wait to see if the PS3 solves the problem.

The PS2 has no antialiasing problem...

There has been a lot of confusion regarding the PS2 and antialiasing problems. The truth is that the "ridged" polygon sides are actually a shimmering artifact from the fact that the first developers really didn't know how to develop for this system. Aparently, Sony has already released bits of code to quickly fix this problem (aparently it can be fixed within a day, or so I've heard) I have yet to play RR5, but please don't review it if you havn't played the US release. Also, like I said, the PS2 doesn't have an "antialiasing" problem, just a polygon alignment problem; this problem should have already been nipped in the bud. The PS2 is actually capable of full-screen antialiasing. I look forward to seeing what Namco has done with their US translation, but until then, I can't comment on how fun this game actually is. Sorry! :)

Actually, aliasing IS Namco's fault

You see... the PS-2 supports full screen anti-aliasing, but the developers decided to overlook this in the developer's guide. It is very simple to add; however, Namco decided not to take the time to do this, thus making Sony look bad in the eyes of the uninformed. You should be seeing more games soon that do not sport this jagged, underdeveloped look.

Bleh. Don't waste your time.

I got a playstation 2 (opening day, no reserve ticket, 6 hours of suffering- thank you very much) and bought madden 2001 and ridge racer V. Let's just say I will immediately be returning the latter. Ridge Racer V was a big let down... not only did it take FOR-ever to load between scenes, but sometimes it would just hang up and make me restart the ps2!! I've had no such problems with the other game. Verdict: spend your money on something else.

Simple strokes for simple folks....

This game is a cynical rushed project which should fool no one. Put simply it is Ridge racer 1 tarted up. That's right Ridge 1! It lacks the subtleties, playability, handling and innovation of Ridge Racer 4, and is not fit to wipe the feet of the likes of Gran Turismo. Do not buy this! The PS2 can do far, far better (hopefully).

People that want great looking games should definitely try Ridge Racer V. This game is without a doubt the best-looking launch title for the PS2. Althoug RR games usually can't compete with the Gran Turismo series, RRV for PS2 far surpasses GT2. The game is amazingly realistic, from the background to the dynamics of the vehicles. Gameplay is fast and smooth, and the music is pretty cool too. My only complaint about this title is the announcer. His annoying comments sometimes get in the way of the race. If Namco hadn't included him, this game would have been perfect for its time.
