Not worth your money and time, buy something else!!

My intention with this review is to provide a rather different oppinion from most reviews here which qualify this game with an average 4.5 stars. I purchased this game for my son for two reasons: The price drop and the excellente reviews. I had no previous knowledge of Rayman, so I came unbiased to play it. I own 3 titles from Spyro the Dragon (games that have always satisfied my son) Jak and Daxter (PS2) and Crash Bandicoot "Wrath of Cortex" (Xbox), and my son plays all of them very regularly. I personally like these games very much so I expected Rayman 2 to be a great platformer game. Well, the thing is that my son played Rayman 2 for about an hour and a half and never picked it up again, I myself had to play it in order to understand what was wrong, but then I understood him.
First: the graphics, I have read in every review, even the newer ones, that the graphics are excellent and so on. Well, to my opinion the graphics can not even match Spyro 3 on the PSOne, they are graphics that are ok for an early launch on the PS2 but can not be compared to the possibilities that we are getting today, and I refer in this case to Jak and Daxter, where the developers (Naughty Dog) have done a beautiful job on this subject. Second: the voice acting, what can I say, I personally found the constant whispering (instead of real voices) very annoying, I even thought there was some kind of malfunction in the CD because of this, until I realized that those whispers WERE the voices. Third: the story, even though it is a typical platform story, there is no fun in it, I personally found it very boring, and I couldn't play it for more than half hour before I could fall asleep.
I truly wish that I could find something good about this game, but the truth is that I had to sell it one day after I got it, neither my son nor I liked this game. If you truly want to play a good platformer then go for Jak and Daxter, there is no comparison (great graphics, hilarious voice acting -even in spanish-, good story and lots of fun), or wait for the PS2 version of Spyro the dragon, or even play the PSOne versions of Spyro, I can assure you that you will have more fun with those than you will with Rayman 2. I was deceived by the price drop and the good reviews, and made a terrible mistake: wasted [money], so don't fall for the same, this game can only and hardly diserve the one star I gave it.

I was looking for a Mario-type game for the PS2, and saw the excellent reviews people had given this game. Without even doing any research on this game, as I had never heard of it before, I went and ordered it based on what everyone else had said. What a mistake. I played it once, for about 45 minutes, and kept waiting for the gameplay to suddenly get a lot more exciting. It never did.

Sure, the graphics and sound are amazing, but the game is boring. There's not enough action. It has to do more with roaming around an environment and only occasionally encountering enemies than it has to do with constantly jumping over obstacles and the like. I'm 25 years old, so maybe I'm too old for this game, and it would be better received by a younger crowd, but it definitely failed to grip my attention and keep me engaged.

So, don't make the same mistake I did. If you're older than 15 or 20, you really might want to go out and rent this game before you buy it. It bums me out when people give bad reviews on games that I really like (like FIFA or Tekken, for example), but I was so disappointed by this game that I just had to share my opinion on it. It definitely is no Mario, I'll say that much.

funky errors, and frusterating camera angles

I rented the game and had high expectations...but this is what I got....

The game has an excellent story line...too bad they ruined it by getting off the point, non clear directions, and well whoever made this game needs help concentrating! well the graphics are OK....not anything good, but bearable although a few times I couldn't tell land from water and died. then there is the camera (viewing) is way too weird! I mean half the time I couldn't see where I was going! but the worst part of this game was the errors!... this happened several other places also! and if you didn't save your game you lose everything! one other thing was some of the rides like the rollercoaster (if you call it that) will make you sick to your stomach...on the rollercoaster all you are doing is spinning very very fast. and they set it up so it appears on the screen that you are sitting on the seat ...still get headaches from just the thought of it. if you want to try the game be sure to rent it first!!! and make sure you get pretty far in the game (past the first mask) because that is where the trouble starts.

Tough for younger kids...and too many video clips!

I was in search of a "simple" game for my 5 year old to enjoy besides sports or "shooting" games. Although the graphics of Rayman2 are phenominal, the game play is difficult for younger children. My 5 year old likes to briefly play the parts that are simple, but most often would rather watch me play.

I find the constant animated video scenes annoying. You have to watch 2-3 minutes of video before you can do anything, then after punching out one door, you have to watch another 2-3 minutes of video. The first levels of the game are all cluttered with constant video clips... enough already, just let me play the game!

This game had a lot of potential however one serious flaw in design made it too frustrating to play. While the graphics, sound, and storyline are very good the load times between sections are unacceptable. Sections are rather small and passing back and forth requires loads > 30 seconds. This wouldn't be a problem if the game was linear and you just went from level to level unfortunately you have to go back and forth between sections quite frequently. There may be several loads in between totaling several minutes of waiting. I hope in the future the developers can design the game to reduce load times and eliminate these unacceptable breaks in gameplay.

Don't rent this one without instructions!

I rented this game and since I did not get instructions, I could not figure out how to play it at all. From the opening level the graphics looked great, but this is probably not one you want to rent.

Good Idea, Horrible Execution

Rayman 2 on the load screens claims the name, "Rayman: Revolution", but a revolution it certainly isn't. The game pretty much is a port from the other Rayman 2's, just with special little PS2 type enhancements. It follows the same storyline and everything. It even has the same levels and stages, so if you own the other Rayman 2's, this is a waste of money.

If you don't, it's still a waste of money. There is a lot of loading, and takes a long time. The game save eats up 270 KB on the memory card. It has alright game play, but NOT worth the money unless it's for a six year old.

Solid Platformer with a some flaws

As a huge fan of the platform genre I purchased this game after the many positive reviews I read of this game. First Off, I would have to say that I was very impressed with the diversity and the rich colorful graphics of the game. I was also very impressed with the camera and character control which I feel was one of the best I've experienced in any platformer yet.

Many people keep saying that this game isn't any good because it's not as nice looking as Jak & Daxter nor a fun as Spyro or Crash and I would have to agree. One reason for this is that Rayman is not these games, but nonetheless it's a wonderful gaming experience. I know this is a first gen PS2 title and there are tons of better looking games on the market, but I would have to say that I really liked the atmosphere and environments of Rayman. The game was a little slow moving at first but if you have a little patience the intensity of the game will beging to increase as well as the fun factor. It may seem a little childish at times, which to me was fine, but if you need a little more maturity you can always slap GTA3 into your PS2 and get your fix.

I gave this game a 4 instead of a 5 for a couple reasons; which seemed minor in the beginning but became very frustrating as the game progressed. The were as follows:

1. The constant loading and then asking you if you want to save was very very annoying, probably the worst I have ever experienced. There are times when you will come out of loading and then go thru a door or down a path and immediately be asked to save or continue and then the game would start to load again. I know this may sound like I'm overreacting, but when you have to go back and forth between areas, this becomes a real pain in the A**... real fast.

2. There is quite a bit of aliasing (jaggies) during the game although it is not overwhelming it is noticeable.

3. The voice acting was subpar and low in volume. There were times when I just couldn't make out what the heck the characters were talking about or what my next mission objective was.

Overall this game is a solid experience and ,especially at the new reduced price, a solid PS2 purchase. It may not be the flashiest or most original title on the market, but what it lacks in luster in makes up in spades with consistency.

Great game for all ages!!

I just purchased Rayman yesterday after reading so many outstanding reviews. I have played many of the action / adventure games that were popular on other platforms (ie. Mario 64, Zelda), and I can report that Rayman ranks right up there with the best. The graphics are outstanding. I noticed no slowdown and the images are very smooth! Gameplay is great. It won't take long to get used to the controls. In fact, the first couple of "levels" are really easy, and were designed that way so you could get used to the many abilities of Rayman. (For example, you will be taught how to swim, jump, use Rayman's helicopter ears, etc). But what I really like about the game, is that I think it will appeal to all ages. Believe me, it won't take long to get hooked on trying to build up your character. The story line is decent and the game is HUGE!! Go out and buy a copy if you like this Genre. You won't be sorry.
