Gorgeous Graphics and Smooth Game Play...

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 4
Date: December 16, 2001

Rayman 2: Revolution was a lot of fun to play and even though the story line was like the N64 version ("Rayman 2"), it's not an exact copy. It does't push the graphics limits of the PS2, but it's still very smooth on the eyes with it's rich colors.

Get this one...
o If you loved the N64 version.
o If you like some "cuteness" in your games and want to root for the little guy.
o If you like 3D adventure/platfomer games.

My Interpretation of The Rating Scale:
1 - Barf. Something to be avoided at all costs.
2 - Not good. Will not recommend to friends/family/etc.
3 - Ok. Will buy new, but not a necessity.
4 - Excellent. Run out and purchase as soon as available.
5 - Top rating. Annoy friends/family with recitation of how cool it is.

The best platformer since Mario64

Those silly French sure can make some great games. And Rayman is right at the top as an example. It can best be described as "trippy." The characters, settings and levels are all fantastic. What else can one say for a protagonist with no arms or legs, but does have floating hands and feet mind you!

Ok, let's hit the nitty gritty. The control scheme is very intuitive. The left stick controls movement while X jumps and the square attacks. The L2 button is used for strafing and locking on to targets so you are always facing them (ala Zelda64).

The L1 and R1 buttons can be used to adjust the camera. This is just about the only area of the game that isn't perfect. Sometimes the camera isn't exactly in the best position and has led to a couple of annoying deaths.

However, the saving, loading and continuing options are all extremely well implemented. You can save anywhere on a level. And while you may start back at the beginning, all collected items will remain and the levels are so huge as to be a chore to go back through.

The variety between the levels is very refreshing as well. A lot of the game is standard run, jump, fight. But there are plenty of unique levels like water skiing behind a giant snake swimming through a swamp. You can launch yourself off of ramps to grab items or avoid obstacles. There are also some snowboard-esque levels thrown in as well. All are very well done.

The only other minor gripe I have is that the controls aren't given to you. A little trial and error is needed to figure out how to perform an obvious task. Like climbing up between two walls takes positioning yourself in a specific location not readily indentifiable. Oh well, not a big deal.

The game is hard to describe. Kind of Sesame Street on a really great acid trip (not that I'd know of course). So do yourself a favor and pick up this gem. It's worth every penny.

Goooood stuff

This game really is amazing. Sure, it looks like a Disney cartoon and maybe it's geared towards the younger crowd, but this game is good enough for all ages. The control is dead-on and the music is great. The graphics are fantastic as well. There are a few polygon seams occasionally, but it's got such a huge amount of colors at once and the framerate is liquid smooth. The games fun too; good amount of challenge, not so much that you'll become frustrated. The only downside is the camera. While it behaves most of the time, it does sometimes go nuts. Still, you like games? You'll have a good time here.

Hard, breathtaking, and just simply amazing.

First of all, I thought the game would be a lame-o game until I read reviews. Most of the reviews were on the posotive side, but some were on the negative side, with ... little complaints. I got Rayman2 for my birthday. I opened it up and popped it into my Playstation2. My first hour of gameplay made me experience one of the greatest games I have played. OKAY, so I'm thirteen years old and I am controlling some freakish looking character that has no arms or legs. Rayman 2 covers almost every genere except simulation or sports...The game covers HARDCORE adventure...this game is so terribly big....you'll be playing it for at least a year. I guess I could classify it as an RPG also. Don't expect blood and gore for the action either, simply, Rayman will throw some force ball or something strange like that. Puzzles are everywhere in this game also. The way Rayman can can interact with other heroes and the environment is also amazing. The only reason I rated it 4 stars is because of difficulty. I know a lot of people will give up after a while, or look up some cheat codes to show you how to beat the game with your eyes closed. I know the whole concept is more on a puzzle genere, but im just warning you if you give up a lot. To close it up, Rayman 2: Revolution would be a great game to swallow you up for a year. If you're not interested in armless and legless characters, I reccomend you rent it first, because this game is hard as heck too, which makes it a great game. With renting, yeh dont have to gamble 50 bucks into seeing if you like it or you dont...just use up a lousy 5 bucks and rent it, then buy it.

A great game

I was looking for a Mario type game for my 5 year old, so I bought this game. While after the first couple of scenes it became too hard for my 5 year old to play, I thought it was great. I thought the game started out very easy, and I liked the way it introduced new moves and concepts by incorporating tutorials into the game play. I don't understand the comment another reviewer made about not being able to figure out the game without the instructions. The game held your hand all the way until you mastered all the different moves (except the flying and running missles. I don't think anyone could master those.)

Another comment I would make is concerning having to watch all the videos between the diffent levels. If you hit the START button, you could skip past a lot of those. I would watch them though since they let you know what the object of the next level is.

One more comment is regarding the simplicity that some reviewers have complained about. They obviously didn't play the game very long. It progressively gets harder (the most difficult parts being at around %50 and %88 percent through the game).

This game hung my PS2 a couple of times, but you can save often so that wasn't a big deal. Overall, I think this was a great game and look forward to playing it again in a year when I've forgotten everything.

GET THIS GAME!

the game is great! however, if you have rayman: the great escape, i suggest you don't get this.... The graphics are awesome, you can master the controls within the first couple of levels, with the aid/advice of Murphy... if you liked games such as zelda, try this...not to mention that if you get enough lums, there are 3 two player minigames...

Draws you in -- very, very good!

Anyone out there who's a fan of the old school platform game knows the simple joy that those kinds of games can bring you. Simple plot, easy controls, yet if it's well done, it'll blow the most sophisticated games right out of the water in terms of sheer playability. A lot of people lamented the fact that 3D games ment the destruction of this kind of game.

Not so. Here's proof.

This game is about as cutting edge as it can be. It looks amazing, sounds amazing, and has amazing control, flow, and atmosphere. Every one of my friends who has seen the game has commented on how it looks and sounds. The colors are lush, everything looks hand drawn, and there's often little touches that betray the care than went into this game (like individually and carefully placed trees, rocks, and flowers, or small groves that serve no purpose other than just to BE there and add to the feel of the game.) The music seems ripped straight from a Disney film and fits the game PERFECTLY. Rayman's world seems like just that: A WORLD unto itself. Not just the illusion of a world, but an actual, living place. The sheer atmosphere is more prominent than in many RPGs, and everything falls into place perfectly.

At the same time, while the game has amazing depth, it's also quite simple. It is, at it's heart, a simple adventure platform game, and it stays quite true to it's roots. The story is a simple one, but it's engaging. The game makes it easy to figure out what to do next, but doesn't make it easy to accomplish it. In fact, at times the game is rather challenging, but never overly so. Still, younger players may suffer some frustration in the latter half where the game becomes much more unforgiving. Despite this, it isn't really difficult by any means, and anyone who could master the original Super Mario Bros. (among which I'm sure there were a good number of young'ns) will not be defeated by this game. At least not for long. And this game is HUGE, so expect to devote some time to solving it. There will be no finishing this in one sitting. Or two. Or, most likely, ten.

The only gripe is in comparison to the Dreamcast version of the game (which was released first). While this iteration of the game is a superior GAME (it has a better progression, more puzzles and levels, more abilities, and a better sense of cohesion), it lacks a bit when compared to it's predecessor in terms of construction. If you look for it, it's fairly easy to tell that the game wasn't originally designed for the PS2. The framerate is much lower than the DC version (where it blazed along at 60 frames per second). Here, it's more like 20, and it dips well below the 10 range if there is too much action on the screen. While this doesn't detract from the gameplay at all, it IS noticable. And, while Rayman himself looks much better than his DC counterpart, the levels look a bit more jagged in places, and there seems to be less actually going on (butterflies flying around, fish swimming, etc.) Also, it's worth noting that this version is much brighter and more colorful than the DC version. While this can be a good thing in some places (the Lava Sanctuary, with it's bright reds and oranges, look stunning in particular) the game's darker look on the Dreamcast actually worked in it's favor in giving the game a more subtly cool and occasionally sinister tone at times. This is more personal preference, as some areas benefit much more from the added color than they did on the Dreamcast.

If I had to choose which version looked better, I'd have to say the Dreamcast, just by a hair. Still, if I had to pick a version to own, I'd pick this one, hands down. The added features and newfound flow of the game add back tenfold whatever graphical hindrances the game picked up in the transition from one console to another.

This game comes very highly reccomended.

Rayman 2 on the load screens claims the name, "Rayman: Revolution", but a revolution it certainly isn't. The game pretty much is a port from the other Rayman 2's, just with special little PS2 type enhancements. It follows the same storyline and everything. It even has the same levels and stages, so if you own the other Rayman 2's, this is a waste of money.

If you don't, it's still a waste of money. There is a lot of loading, and takes a long time. The game save eats up 270 KB on the memory card. It has alright game play, but NOT worth the money unless it's for a six year old.
