I hate this game. First off, I cant see it. It's too dark. I made it as bright as possible, and I still get a headache from squinting. I can hardly make out the very important ledges I seem to keep falling off of. The controls are awkward, and the levels are unnecessarily tedious. The whole batarang thing is a joke. I'm a huge Batman fan, but I can even stomach the cartoon after playing this game. It's almost as bad as the N64 Superman game. Nothing could be that bad.
Pitiful....

I am a huge Batman fan. Anything with Batman in it, you bet I'll watch it. So when I heard about this game I was so excited. I actually bought the PS2 mostly so I could play this game. I thought this game would be so cool, but boy was I wrong... It isn't that I don't like it being dark or the controls because it's supposed to be dark and the controls work perfectly, you just have to be good with controls. But basically...this game was boring. It was really really boring. And don't think for one second you can use the BatGrapple anytime you want to. Another thing I hate is that theres no Robin, not that he would've made the game's flaws any better but he would have made it more interesting. I mean the only good guys are Batman and Batgirl..... Now if that isnt messed up I don't know what is. I mean where's Robin and Nightwing? Wheres Catwoman?! She's one of the classic villains. And what about all the other villains from the cartoon? They've only got Joker and his Girlfriend, Dr Freeze, and Poison Ivy. They did such pitiful jobs on Joker and Dr Freeze's faces. Dr Freeze's eyes look nothing like that. I mean where are all the classic characters besides Batman and Joker?!
Gameplay is bad. Its so messed up. They make Batman seem so weak. For instance when you fall off of a building there's no way to save yourself. Why do they make it so bad when they know they could make it so cool? Graphics and detail are good but that doesn't make gameplay any better. Another thing I don't like is that cuff junk. I mean seriously guys. Everytime he runs out of cuffs the henchmen just keep coming back. And he is so slow to react to your movements. And it just doesn't have the Batman style. This game almost makes me hate Batman and want to go running to the Superman game for PS2 coming out in September. Man I've played better Batman games at cartoonnetwork.com.... I love Batman so much and it crushed me to see how messed up this game was. Take my advice, if you're a Batman fan, don't get this game. And if you're not a Batman fan, still don't get this game. I traded my cousin this game for a Scooby-Doo one. And it seemed like the best game ever after I got through playing Batman Vengeance. Overall this is the worst game based on the best comic.

While the beat-em-up does a fantastic job of capturing the atmosphere of the Batman cartoons, translating the two-dimensional character designs into the polygonal world of the PS2, and pegging the voices spot-on (which they should; they're the real voice actors from the show), the game feels more like an interactive movie than a full-fledged video game. The levels play very linear, and seem to only bridge the gaps between cut-scenes (which, in my opinion, are far too Matrixy in their slow-motion/rotating 'camera' style.) Not even the driving levels give you a chance to break free from the scripted game, as you take turns in a button-pressing marathon akin to Parappa the Rapper, matching arrows on the screen with buttons on your Dual Shock 2.
As for kids playing this, forget it. The harsh difficulty's had me curse out loud on many occasions, with one level in particular stopping my progress dead in its tracks during a cheap sequence of platform jumps that are nearly impossible to navigate. One wrong move and whoops! You've got to start the level over. Then the levels involving the Bat-vehicles are just as bad; miss a turn in the Batmobile and it's the game over screen for you.
The final fault I'll list here is one only Batman faithful need concern themselves with, and it's the sparse character showing. As opposed to Robin communicating with Batman by Bat-radio, it's Batgirl. Robin is nowhere to be seen. Then there are the villains, the icing on the Bat-cake. While arch-nemesis The Joker makes an appearance along with cool baddie Mr. Freeze, I was really hoping to trade blows with Killer Croc, Two-Face and Clayface. My, what they could have done with Clayface. But no, it seems that we're limited to the two mentioned above along with Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy. To make up for this neglect, there'd better be a nice Scarface level in the sequel (in addition to Robin and Commissioner Gordon, but that goes without saying.)
Alright, so with all of this negativity, why didn't I give it a lower score? Because anyone who adores the cartoon show like I do will thrill at the game, if at nothing more than the signature red skyline and Mark Hamill's insane cackling as The Joker.
So as I said earlier, kids will want to rent it first to see if it's a little too difficult for them, and adults not obsessed with Batman would want to avoid it for its lack of real playability. Hopefully a prospective sequel will be closer in gameplay to the Spiderman series from Neversoft, and as such be fun for all.

Having played most of the other Batman games, I can say definitely that this is the best of the lot. The cinematics are great, and it game play isn't too hard to start out with. Most games I own have the cheat codes nearby, but this one is challenging without being impossible, so there's no need for that yet. The game's not perfect though. There are a few areas that are a little hard to figure out what you're supposed to be doing (during one training session, you're told to free fall and how to speed it up or slow it down, but you're never told what you're falling after...it's a training dummy that's falling faster than you, by the way). Plus, sometimes Batman breaks into a run when you just want to change positions on him, which causes a few problems when navigating narrow ledges. I love the fact that with a push of a button you can immediately have the camera back behind you so it's easy to see things if the camera angle gets freaky (a little attribute that the new Spider Man game DESPERATELY needed). It's a lot of fun, and entertaining enough to keep the kids (and their parents like me) having fun for a long time. You definitely want to add this one to your collection (at least until the next Tomb Raider comes along - or the sequel to this game!).
Could be better.

I'd probably like this game more if I hadn't just played the new PS2 Spider-Man game. There's just no competition. The controls in this game are clumsy, and it's way too easy to fall off a building with no way to save yourself. The idea of Batman mincing along the edge of roofs carefully looking for a place to launch his bat-grapple detracts from the flavor of the game to me.
If you're looking for a game where you can feel like a superhero, jumping off roofs with no concern for yourself and trusting your abilities to save you in time, then go with Spider-Man. A far more exhilarating superhero experience overall.

Based on the popular Animated Series line, this game provides great style. The joy of hearing the cast voices and seeing a fairly faithful 3-D adaption of the cartoon's aesthetic thrills the heart of a fan, but that thrill fades with time as you will soon realize the game only offers increasing frustration.
While there are some clever scenarios and challenges early on, the game often limits you to certain predetermined strategies in dealing with them, especially in the boss modes. So while Batman gets to duke it out with Mr. Freeze, it's only in a certain way, and not any way I'll guarantee that a Batman fan fervently wished for("Hey, I want a game where I can fight villains, but only indirectly!" is not likely to be heard any time soon), a way that Batman probably wouldn't pick because it takes forever. And one of the coolest visual parts of the toon, the batgrapple, can only be fired at certain points. On many occasions, you'll be in a situation that can easily be escaped except, of course, you can't really use the grapple. Ultimately you'll wonder why you were even given a utility belt.
The plot is increasingly insulting to the fan as well. Later in the game, Batman goes undercover to escape the police (yup, they're tricked into disliking him so you can relive Batman Year One for a bit). Presumably, the idea of being more limited is supposed to be appealing, but this just leads to some stupid jumping on boxes. Finally, for the game to work as a narrative, you have to believe that Batman just wouldn't walk out of the Batcave carrying everything he could possibly carry. Cause, y'know, he doesn't like to clutter the utility belt up.
Rather than stretch the game design to accomidate Batman, they've limited a cool character to fit the game situation. That's frustrating and tiresome for the fan. As an aside, when will game designers learn that nobody playing a superhero game wants to jump on boxes/platforms/etc.??? If we want to jump and leap, we'll play Sonic the Hedgehog or something. if we want to beat up villains, we pick superhero games.
Finally, the controls stink and it's impossible sometimes to tell where you are. Sometimes you are treated to the creepy image of Batman's face visible through the back of his head to make it even more disorienting. You also have to wait for Batman to do his cool moves, earning time in the power bar. Thus, illogically, Batman is only able to throw down with a Joker thug after letting the thug wail on him for a while.
Batman the way it should be? or could be?

Is this really what some batman games should look like? I'd say yes they should. Crime busting, bat cuffing enemies, taking on evil. Yep, that's the way a Batman game should be. But what about Batman Vengence.
To start off the game is somewhat fun, but Batman Returns is the only satisfying Batman game I've seen. The controls for the game are almost top notch but when your in the batcave and Alfred is explaing them all it seems confusing. The levels are okay but not always the best. The game gets pretty boring fast.
The plot? Well, there isn't much of a plot I'd say, as the games villians don't link into a huge plot to overthrow batman or something (then again I'm not really that far). So I'm not sure if the plot is really worth it.
The voice acting wasn't too bad. In fact it felt like a real epidsode of Batman on T.V. The voices sounded on par with the characters they were. However as a CG some of the characters look awful. Not to mention that the game only feature four villians out of who knows.
The music is very tedious. While it fits the mood perfectly, by that I mean it sounds heroic, it gets annoying really fast. I found myself wanting to turn the volume down big time. There was no way I could listen to the music. The good news about it is that it isn't too repeative.
The gadgets match up with the show almost perfectly, but you notice a few small things about the in game action. For example there are not 500+ moves as the case claims, and the enemies don't put up a fight at all.
If your a fan of Batman you'll probably find this to be an OK experience but my advice is to just leave this game and wait for the next Batman game and hope that ones better. This one was close though.
Better Off Renting...........

This isn't the best PS2 has to offer. This is a rental game cause at least then you only payed (...) bucks for it instead of (...). Somes scenes are just way too dark and the character control is not the best and the graphics aren't anything to get excited over. Don't get me wrong it's not the worse game out there but if you're like me and picky about games you buy then stay away from purchasing this one. Go rent it.
