If you liked Final Fantasy 7 and/or 8 you will LOVE Xenogears! Its just like watching a really good anime (like Evangelion, ne?), the storyline is DEFINITELY this game's driving factor, which for me was a plus... but there is a lot of reading and thinking, which may be a drawback to some players.
The battle system is generally fun and there is enough variety in the moves that you won't get easily bored with it. Also, you keep learning new attacks up into the 80-something levels, so leveling up isnt only a tedious chore. There are also a lot of characters so you can experiment and customize your perfect teams.
The story line--the best part--is mature and serious.... maybe too strongly religious for the younger children or deeply Christian... if you can watch Evangelion you can play this though, just be warned! The characters are very well developed with deep-rooted problems and desires, and there's enough of a cute love story to appeal to us girls! ^_^ Some really touching scenes, and some exciting ones.... note the comparisons to Evanglion I've been making! They're very similar... I think Xenogears has something for just about everyone and it's definitely one of MY favorites! (good soundtrack too... you must hear "Small Two of Pieces"! )
Best Playstation RPG , by far!

The story in Xenogears was weird, really. Weird and long, with probably more text than a 500 page book, I'm not kidding around either. The battles were awesome, but, the only downfall to them is if you have good gears, levels don't mean a thing! So if you are level 99, if you have the same gear you had on level 50, you wouldn't do any more damage than you would on level 50. If you like training, Xenogears may not be for you.On the other hand, you could do awesome combo moves in battle. Also, the music in this game was great! It never really gets repetive like it does in many RPG's.The gameplay hours were incredible, it took me 48 hours to beat Xenogears, and I have beaten my fair share of rpg's, 30 to be exact. So if your a newer gamer, it could take up to 70 hours to beat Xenogears.Lastly, basically all disc 2 was text. I found myself constantly reading some of it for an hour straight, multiple times on disc 2, reading the text fairly fast. If you are a newer gamer, this one may be tough. Otherwise, I reccomend to any RPG gamer that likes a challenge.
This Should Be the Standard of RPGs

Despite this games age(unlike fine wine) it totally kicks. Its very addictive and has seemingly limitless hours of gameplay. A one of a kind fighting system that has a large number of combos that can be learned and performed. Your characters cycle between fighting in large hand to to hand combat and ether using mech like robots and reg character battle. This is the kind of game serious gamers lose sleep, meals, girlfriends, jobs, etc on. The storyline is original and flows very well, however its very difficult to navigate at times bc of viewpoint and details that are easily overlooked, that being my only gripe. The landscapes,FMVs(mostly anime style- which are beautiful for its time),and especially the"Sub" world map areas are designed richly and beatifully. This to me is the kind of fantasy game that captures the whole of your imagination. I think its a shame that no RPG released since this one(that Ive played) has managed to reach such a level of enjoyment, and Im speaking mostly of the battle system alone. It rivals games such as Chrono Trigger and the first Suikoden. I recommend this game to any serious gamer who is looking to start on a long and very enjoyable gaming experience.

I could have fell in love with this game, that is could have. This game has so many great features in it and as you read reviews you can read why. i'm sure I'm one of the few people who gave this game such a low rating and I might be the first one you have come across. Well like I said this game had potential to be great, the plot was awesome and there weren't any loop holes. The battle system was great and the charaters were pretty good. The love story behind it wasn't so great, two people on two sides of a war meet, fight together and one day say "oh... I'm going to sleep with you now lay down byotch!" Anyways that isn't the reason why I didn't like this game. The thing is it involved too much reading. I wasn't reading a book! I was playing a game and I found myself waking up with a sore thumb from pressing the X button for hours and still not through all the dialog from one part. Of course I'm exaggerating; It didn't take hours but sometimes it was close to an hour. There are times when the game gets you prepared for battle. Someone in the game stands up and says "Enough with us talking let's go kick some...!" But instead of you the so-called player of this game, going and causing havoc, you get to watch someone sit in a chair and descibe how the battle went... Disappointing and doesn't appeal to my A.D.D.
Buy this game immediately.

To put it simply, Xenogears is the single best Playstation RPG. Don't talk to me about Final Fantasy 7 or 8, because those games just don't even come close. The only game that compares is Final Fantasy 3 (or 6), but that's only because the length is more reasonable. Few games in my lifetime have provided me with the immemse pleasure that Xenogears did. Xenogears is just the total package: graphics, gameplay, story, and music all come together to form a devastating combo. The battle system (especially the Gears!) will knock your socks off. The story is by far the best I've ever seen in any video game. The music is beautiful, easily crushing the hopeless Playstation Final Fantasies (only FF6's music is this good). There's just one problem: the length. This game took me about 85 hours to beat. However, you should not let that stop you from purchasing this game as soon as possible. This is my personal favorite game of all time, and I'm sure it will rank high on your list, too.
a must buy!

I'll be as honest as possible. This game is most definately one of the best rpg's out there, although it has some flaws. I'll begin with those. 1) The characters are a bit pixellated 2) The ending is sort of lame 3) some mazes and dungeons are either boring or difficult, or both 4) It is hard to advance levels without spending a lot of time wandering around 5) A main character cannot be used for the latter portion of the game 6) There are blaring grammatical errors in the dialogue. 7) The 2nd cd has only some fighting, and most of it is just the characters telling the rest of the story. The good aspects really outweigh the bad ones, though. 1) The story is very captivating 2) The music is simply AWESOME. 3) The game environment gives the right mood for each location, each one unique 4) Excluding the characters, the game has excellent graphics, with a very natural movement of characters 5) The fighting systems for both characters and gears are easy to learn and makes the game twice as fun 6) Every boss is fun to fight 7) The gears look cool 8) The anime and cg are absolutely stunning 9) The whole game has an aesthetic appeal 10) All of the characters are unique and well made The "good" list goes on and on, and the "bad" list is basically comprised of minor details. This game makes a mockery out of FF7 and 8, really. Take my advice and get it, the game play is about 50hrs. to 70hrs.
A mixed bag.

Out of all the RPG fansites and magazines and such, you'll find many RPG fans adoring this particular game. Xenogears is a decent game and it's a shame that it wasn't released under a Greatest Hits collection like the horrible Chrono Cross has. Still, I find myself finding this game to be far from great. Being somewhat of an RPG fan (I use "somewhat" very loosely), I find myself disappointed but also intrigued. Read on or face the fires of Hell:
THE GOOD
This game has a REALLY good storyline, and we get a main character that's unique in the sense that he doesn't want to fight, but he knows that he must. The storyline has often been touted as the best plot an RPG ever had, and while that can be debated (I always thought Chrono Trigger had the best storyline...), it's still awesome. A futuristic tale of social class warfare with various different symbolisms... very complex. I was a bit disturbed at the game's athiest point of view, but oh well. I'll let that slide. The battle system is also quite good, featuring several different combos your characters and gears can perform. The music is top notch, and since it's the same composer of Chrono Trigger (Yasunori Mitsuda), you can expect a gold musical score here. The multiplayer feature is quite good, too, and I shun all those people who have beaten me by using Xenogears (the ultim---er, CHEATING gear *Cough Cough* Someone I know.... *Cough Cough*).
THE BAD
The unfortunate downside of this game happens to be in the presentation. This game is virtually 70% dialogue and story and 30% gameplay. I'm not kidding. I came here to play a GAME, not WATCH it! I guess the RPG fans just want to sit there in awe, but when a battle is going on, I EXPECT TO PARTICIPATE IN IT. I was vastly disappointed when it cut to one of the characters in a chair talking about the battle with the pendant in the background swaying back and forth. This happened a lot on the second disc and it's a shame. I also felt the love story, albeit far from bad, didn't quite get the boost that it needed; it just seemed to "happen." Oh well.
OVERALL
Die hard RPG fans no doubt love this game and while it's far from terrible, I do think it's overrated. A great story with interesting characters, but not nearly enough gameplay involvement. If I wanted to watch something, I'll watch a DVD. Nevertheless, I do recommend this game to any RPG fan, BUT ONLY TO THOSE WITH A LOT OF PATIENCE. I might get negatives for this, but that's just because the people that give negative votes are usually very shallow.

While in most hearts, Final Fantasy VII may have been one of, if not Squaresofts best game. To me, Xenogears easily takes that category. With a brilliant mixture of love, religion, human and beast preservation, global war, and the conflict of finding ones own place in the world, compounded into one story line, Xenogears is by far one of the most spectacular games I have ever had the privilege of playing. The battle sequences, as well as the music heard during boss fights, is in a league that no game, including any one of the Final Fantasy games could match. Except for one aspect, the camera angle remains in one position. It may zoom in from time to time, but even that is extremely boring. The cinematic scenes, with their anime qualities, were indeed a marvelous touch to the game.
The game follows a pattern, that most, if not all the Square's RPGs contain, a portion of the game when the main character becomes inoperable. For instance, in FF7 when Cloud is poisoned and left in Mideel to be tended to or Chrono Trigger when Crono suffers a tragic defeat(not going to spoil it for those yet to play). Of course this portion lead to quite a bit of trouble for me, my first time through. Elly(the one in control after Fei's absence) was rarely used up to that part of the game, thus her status was extremely low.
Despite all of the games wonderfully orchestrated aspects, there was one thing i disliked, the attack combos. I loved to see them in action, the strength of the attacks, and the time it allowed the battles be finished in. However, I did not like the effort it took to learn them. Through out endless efforts I was unable to acquire Fei's last two attack combos. Even after progressing beyond level 60, I was unable to acquire them. The only time I was able to experience those two attacks, was in the playable demo that came with Parasite Eve.
Theres not much for me to say in the con area of my review. I am full of praise for those who took the time to create such a marvelous game. My favorite aspect of the game, would have to be the religious based environments in some regions of the world and even the multiple flashback sequences of past lives that Fei and Elly had lived through.
Xenogears is by far my favorite game. Unfortunately, my discs, have undergone quite a bit of harm, thus ruining my play through it. The cinematic scenes skip and freeze, and the game tends to take quite a bit of time to load from scene to scene. So I am in the process of finding a new one, however my search has met utter failure. But, to all who seek a marvelous game, one with a deep, emotional story line, I suggest buying Xenogears.

I first purchased Xenogears when it first came out, and have been loving it ever since. The gameplay is excellent, the storyline is in-depth, and the soundtrack is beautiful. Yes, this game does involve some religious themes. Yes, this game does not have much gameplay on the second disk. Yes, this game is not everyones allmighty little final fantasy game. (The following opinions are mine, and mine alone).---I hear alot of people saying that this game is "anti-religious". I disagree, this game IS religious...in the world of the game. Just because a game mentions the word "god" does not mean that it is talking about the human worlds god. As far as the second disk goes with gameplay, I found it to be a nice little break considering I spent about 45+ hours on the first disk leveling up my characters and getting their deathblows completed. There is no rule in any game that all gameplay all the time is mandatory. Besides, it kind of completes a little forgotten part of the story when id keeps saying who's turn it is on the "stage". The soundtrack goes above and beyond in complimenting the game. Yasonuri Mitsuda has made another masterpeice, and Joanna Hogg sang very well for the ending song "Small Two of Peices" not to mention the extra song she has in the soundtrack "Star of Tears", an upbeat folk-ish version of the world map theme. As I said before, these are my opinions and mine alone. I am sure someone will find reason to pick apart what I have typed and turn it into something else...go right ahead. Until then, enjoy a wonderful game with a great story. Just remember to keep an open mind, and don't hold your bible like a redneck with directions to wal-mart when you first see a reference to religion. PS- Does anyone still get a little shiver when they see Kreliens head floating in the Wave Existence?

I absolutely loved Xenogears. I wasn't expecting much from the beginning but got so much more than I bargained for. Every single time an event takes place you learn something new...or do you? You actually have to think for yourself somewhat to unravel this games plot. Sure the graphics can be a bit drab and the anime scenes a bit drab, but the story holds it all up. There are TONS of characters in this game, but keeping track of them isn't a drag. The facial shots accompanying the text help a great deal in figuring out what is going on. Don't compare this game to equally great FF8. FF8 is to Xenogears as Star Wars is to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Great films, but different styles. You start to wonder if the reality you take for granted is truly "reality". The music for this game is clearly the best of Squaresoft. I was so glad they got rid of that tinny synthesizer type sound they overused in FF7. I really like the song during the ending credits. Battles are also very quick. There is strategy involved but you don't spend all day in the random fights. The bosses can also be incredibly tough. I also agree with many that the idea of limiting your fuel is incredibly annoying. Don't even think about tackling the final boss until you are ready.
PS: This game has a ton of cool secret references. Most of the cities in the game: Aveh, Kislev, etc. are named after ancient Jewish months. Nisan was the month Jesus died. The Soylent System is an obvious reference to Soylent Green. I could alsmost hear Charleton Heston yell "Soylent Green is made from people!"
