Can't beat a classic...

First and foremost, the graphics are choppy, and the voice overs are horrid. Resident Evil (PS1) was a pioneer in the sense that it played a huge role in opening the "survival horror" genre, but also for everything else Resident Evil, i.e. Game sequels, Movies, Books, Etc. At this point in time, Resident Evil, the original for PS1, is strictly for people who have A: Played it before when it first came out, and liked it, or B: For dedicated fans and/or collectors of the RE series. The '96 release of RE is not a game that can really be appreciated, or "picked up" by this "younger" generation, because few people can go back to those kind of graphics and game-play, when they've been raised, and used to the "New-Gen" consoles.

NOT ONLY IS THIS GAME GREAT TO PLAY BUT ITS REALLY SCARY. I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I STARTED PLAYING THIS GAME WAS REALLY LATE AT NIGHT AROUND 1130 PM, I LOCKED MY DOOR, CLOSED ALL THE WINDOW CURTAINS, GOT ME SOME SNACKS AND DRINKS, AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST POPPED THE GAME INTO MY ORIGINAL PLAYSTATION AND TURNED UP THE VOLUME ON THE TV. THIS GAME REALLY SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME, I WOULD USE ANOTHER WORD BESIDES HELL BUT I DONT WANT TO BE RUDE TO ANYONE ELSE. THE MUSIC AND SOUND EFFECTS SENDED CHILLS DOWN MY SPINE AND I GOT GOOSE BUMPS, BUT THE GAME WAS STILL FUN AND ADDICTING TO PLAY. BY THE TIME I STARTED TO SEE DAYLIGHT I WAS NOT THAT SCARED. SO GIVE THIS GAME A TRY AND SEE FOR YOUR SELF, BUT MAKE SURE YOU PLAY IT TILL DAYLIGHT OR YOU WILL HAVE TO SLEEP AT A MINIMUM WITH YOUR READING LAMP ON. JUST KIDDING, FOR REAL TRY THIS GAME OUT, ITS REALLY FUN.

Best game--will remain a classic

perhaps the founder of the survival horror genre, Resident Evil is a classic that spun off an entire series of wit, zombies, and survival. In my opinion it is the best of all.
the graphics are poor by today's standards, i'll admit that. Of course, this was made in 1996-98(i forget which year). The game uses 2D pre-rendered images with 3D characters and monsters, and uses cheesy violence, shooting, and voice acting, but just remember this game is a playstation 1 game...we've already reached a high deff ps3.
the story revolves around cannabolistic homicides occurring in the small mid-western Raccoon City. When one team of police officers vanishes during investigation, another goes into the woods searching for them, only to find a crashed helicopter and a hoard of mutant dogs, who chase them. The group seeks refuge in an empty mansion, which is discovered to be infested with the living dead. Here, the player must use ammo and weapons around them to keep themselves alive and escape from the mansion.
The classic gameplay and amazing story led to a whole franchise of sequels, movies(unrelated to the series' main plot but good to its own merit), and even novels (which i highly reccommend for RE fans). The game that started all survival horror...i give you Resident Evil.

A Must Have on your Shelf

Say listen, I'm not going to say anything different than anyone else have said about this game, but I would like to say that this game was the sole reason I got the Playstation!!!! So, it's great that a game sells the console. Otherwise I would've gone with Nintendo 64!!! Yikes!!! I'm a fan of the whole creepy game genre, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, etc. But, I must say, it was much more creepier if the game would've stayed in the mansion, because once it went into a Lab, that's where the game kinda became boring. I love the whole mansion concept. Imagine the main boss loose in the mansion lurking around every corridor!!! That's be pretty scary. I mean the main monster was very scary. I kinda hoped he would've been the main monster in the first Resident Evil movie. Instead it was a "licker" from the Resident Evil 2 games. I would've been more scared of the Tyrant than the Licker in the movies. Nevertheless, this game is a true CLASSIC. Get it before it becomes a collectors item and you'll have to spend big bucks to buy it!

A stellar work of achievement

This game still, to me, is the best horror/action game available for the Playstation One. It is a solid all-around game that must be experienced by all Playstation One owners. The storyline and action alone is well worth it. Add in the horror aspects and you've got one hell of a game. The controls are the only weakness in this game but even then, they are on par with most 3 dimensional games out there. I believe that the graphics are top-notch for PS1. Even today, I would still play it, and I own a lot of game consoles including the PS2 and GameCube. I would never sell my copy of Resident Evil because I still go back to it and it is in my opinion a milestone in video gaming history. It will go on to become a much sought-after game years from now. Why? Because it will withstand time. The graphics may be outdated years from now but all the elements that are there historically will be seen as a work of achievement.

Live the horror in the original that started it all!

The Resident Evil series has been one of the most successful game franchises of the past decade, resulting in numerous sequels and re-makes of older installments in the series, as well as spawning two motion pictures. But this is the one that gave birth to not only a new game franchise, but a new genre as well.

Although the survival horror genre has all but disappeared today, in the late 1990s it was one of the top genres in the gaming business. Players assumed the role of a hero lurking about an eerie, creepy environment battling supernatural and superhuman entities. The trademark of survival horror was its intention to scare the living hell out of the player (much like a horror film).

If you've never played this original, I strongly suggest you do so. But make sure you first wait until the middle of the night and turn out all the lights in your room except for the TV...by the end of the first cutscene you may no longer have clean pants! That's how scary this game was when it was first released to unsuspecting fans a decade ago.

Following a string of bizarre incidents and disappearances on the outskirts of Raccoon City, the BRAVO police unit is sent to investigate. Things quickly go wrong however, and four members of the unit seek refuge in a creepy-looking mansion on the edge of the woods (sound familiar?). Now they must find out what the hell is going on.

You play as either Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield, blasting zombies and other undead enemies while exploring the mansion. The pre-rendered background graphics and dramatic shifts in camera angles heighten the suspense that rival Alfred Hitchcock films. You always have the fear that something deadly is waiting for you in the next room.

The plot and gameplay experience are outstanding and the graphics aren't that bad either (considering that this title is now ten years old). But the best part of RE is the mysterious, frightening mood that is conveyed while playing. There are some moments that will scare the living hell out of you!

The evil next door

Resident Evil - Circa 1995

GOOD:
- Considered classic to many gamers
- The roots or start of a super popular franchise
- Was really considered too scary to play in its time
- Pretty good story, with twists and turns

BAD:
- Graphics look very dated
- Voice acting is laughably bad
- Controls feel dated

WILL IT FIT YOUR TASTE:
- Slow moving "survival horror" game, which is more about moving boxes, managing items, and unlocking doors then actually fighting for your life
- A Sc-Fi horror game set in a kooky old mansion filled with zombies, huge spiders, and sharks

GAME ITS MOST ASSOCATED TOO:
- Silent Hill
- Dino Crisis
- Alone in the dark

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- There have been a few remakes of this game on PS1 such as a version where you can use a duel shock controller and a version that is a director cut.
- There was also a really, really good remake for the Nintendo Game Cube
- In Japan Resident Evil is called Biohazard

What is there to say?

Resident Evil started it all with it's zombie filled mansion with nothing but sheer terror and this game is truly original. It was the one to start it all and spawn great classic sequals and also boost up one hell of a remake. The game has a pretty linear story but it's still great. The game was really scary back then but now when you play it you'll laugh out loud at how bad the voice actors were.

It had some great classic moments like you fighting a gigantic plant, to fighting a huge snake. It really had it's share of great horror moments. It's the sheer brilliance that capcom had in making this amazing game. It's more like an adventure.....ehh sort of. The game lets you choose between one of the two main characters. Either way you'll still have a great time. The best is Chris. And now let's get started

THE GRAPHICS ARE AWESOME! FOR THAT TIME IT WAS GREAT! JUST BRILLIANT CAPCOM RULES! I love the backround in this game it's simply terrific and I loved it. SHORT AND SWEET...........THE GRAPHICS RULE!

Gameplay?...Well it's pretty much puzzle solving and sometimes some zombie killin'..............AWESOME!!!?? The gameplay is were this game get's really good and it's survival horror at its best.

Sound...well the acting is horrible but the rest is A-Ok..Especially the music..it's great!

OVER ALL I MUST Say this has superior graphics for that time and age, ok sound and some of the best horror moments in the survival horror genre...and that is why this masterpiece gets a

5 OUT OF 5 STARS!!!!!

And for my final saying in this amazing game it's sad to know that the U.S only carries the "censored" version of the game which takes out a few gory moments in the game like when one of your faithfull team member is getting torn apart by a zombie dog....errr gory...and some other scenes...I happend to see the videos shown on RE fan.com and it was funny yet very very explicet to see... Oh well it still doesn't stop the games mood. And thankfully there still are some violent scenes in the final U.S version such as Weskers death...ewwww nasty..but over all it still is a neat "Censored" version.

And thats about it...
