All Time Originial and Classic Father of Survival Horror

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1

Remember: Just because it's made for a next generation system doesn't mean it's better. Resident Evil was made for the playstation, and it still arguably scarier than most of the new scary games out there. Plain and simple: Don't miss this game. It's one of those titles that *everyone* knows is good. It is such a great game that it's reputation precedes itself. There really shouldn't be any reason why you shouldn't buy it. Unless you don't have any type of playstation or computer. If you're interested in what all the fuss is about with "survival horror" games... Well, this is originial hit that started it all.

Nothing can compare to the first time you play this game. This game is the only really appropriate introduction into the survival horror genre - fitting because IT IS THE GAME THAT STARTED IT ALL. Sure, there was Alone in the Dark, but the unfortunate fact is that the game is too old for most members of the current generations to care or even acknowledge. At least with the playstation 1 & 2 there is still room to include games of an older (but not necessarily worse) generation. As long as you know what you are getting:

-best playstation graphics outside of the Final Fantasy series

-SCARY music good enough for a soundtrack(also available)

-clever controls and game mechanics

-engrossing storyline

-SCARY moments never before experienced

-fairly easy puzzles to solve and move the plot along

-multiple endings and secrets to find

Then you know about...

-graphics are slightly outdated for today's standards

-scary moments aren't so scary if you've play resident evil 2 or other newer survival horrors (i.e. you're "used to them")

-some frustration due to learning a new control scheme

-some backtracking and thinking to solve puzzles

It features a story appropriate enough for it's setting and purpose, and gives the player a reason to keep on playing. The graphics are great for the playstation 1, and trust me. The scary environments, music, sounds, and gameplay totally makes up for anyone spoiled by today's generation of consoles (xbox, gamecube, ps2). Keep in mind, that this game DID have superb graphics at its time, so it's not like it looked terrible from the start. If it looks ugly and grainy, then it's probably more of a personal problem. (the "spoiled" issue doesn't help)

The controls are tough to get used to if you've NEVER played survival horror games before. But in retrospect, it is understandable to have tough controls since the game was the first of it's kind - featuring much of which has never been done before. In that sense, learning how to ride a bicycle is similar to learning resident evil's controls... Or just like learning your first "Shoryuken" or "Hadoken". It is something that must be learned in order for progress to be made. No major arguements can be made with the controls, other than it being necessary for the unique experience of playing something completely different and new. It couldn't have been done any other way.

I've been playing since the Intellivision and Atari. I suspect some may not even know what the first system is, and that's a shame. Those games created the foundation to what we have today. They are the "real" classics. Resident Evil is a game which represents a huge leap in this continuing evolution. Sure, as of now, it pales in comparison to other titles... But at its core is an experience that will blow away any fancy/silky/smooth 3D graphic churned out in today's industry.

There are millions of reviews out there on the internet, basically saying the same thing. This game is undeniably the reason why there IS a survival horror genre. Wouldn't you want to play the game that invented the "adventure" or "action" genre? Of course you would. You would want to play the brand name that started it all, not some cheap rip-off. But even the price tag is a no brainer. At such a small price you can purchase one of the best games ever created. Better now than never. This'll probably be as cheap as it gets before it starts getting expensive due to lack of availability.

The original Resident Evil, ohhh the memories. This first Resident Evil, even though very outdated and dosen't keep up with much of the modern games today like Halo, could very well remain the best to many. Back in 1996, this was a very good game for a number of reasons: graphics, gameplay, storyline, and concept. Not many games were like this, as a matter of fact really no games were like this, which is what made it so good and popular. However, since this is over 10 years old, I don't recommend this to people right now, rather the remake for gamecube because it fits in with more of the modern type games. The bottom line is this is still a great game, and if you can get your hands on it, definetly buy it if you don't already have it, it's definetly recommended for Resident Evil fans out there. Also, it's pretty damn creepy as well! Turn out the lights, invite over some friends and scream your guts out!!

NOT ONLY IS THIS GAME GREAT TO PLAY BUT ITS REALLY SCARY. I REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME I STARTED PLAYING THIS GAME WAS REALLY LATE AT NIGHT AROUND 1130 PM, I LOCKED MY DOOR, CLOSED ALL THE WINDOW CURTAINS, GOT ME SOME SNACKS AND DRINKS, AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST POPPED THE GAME INTO MY ORIGINAL PLAYSTATION AND TURNED UP THE VOLUME ON THE TV. THIS GAME REALLY SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME, I WOULD USE ANOTHER WORD BESIDES HELL BUT I DONT WANT TO BE RUDE TO ANYONE ELSE. THE MUSIC AND SOUND EFFECTS SENDED CHILLS DOWN MY SPINE AND I GOT GOOSE BUMPS, BUT THE GAME WAS STILL FUN AND ADDICTING TO PLAY. BY THE TIME I STARTED TO SEE DAYLIGHT I WAS NOT THAT SCARED. SO GIVE THIS GAME A TRY AND SEE FOR YOUR SELF, BUT MAKE SURE YOU PLAY IT TILL DAYLIGHT OR YOU WILL HAVE TO SLEEP AT A MINIMUM WITH YOUR READING LAMP ON. JUST KIDDING, FOR REAL TRY THIS GAME OUT, ITS REALLY FUN.

Can't beat a classic...

First and foremost, the graphics are choppy, and the voice overs are horrid. Resident Evil (PS1) was a pioneer in the sense that it played a huge role in opening the "survival horror" genre, but also for everything else Resident Evil, i.e. Game sequels, Movies, Books, Etc. At this point in time, Resident Evil, the original for PS1, is strictly for people who have A: Played it before when it first came out, and liked it, or B: For dedicated fans and/or collectors of the RE series. The '96 release of RE is not a game that can really be appreciated, or "picked up" by this "younger" generation, because few people can go back to those kind of graphics and game-play, when they've been raised, and used to the "New-Gen" consoles.

When I first played this game I had to press pause as I encountered the first zombie. This is one of the best games I've ever played. You encounter a lot of elements which keep you coming for more. The story line is great and keeps you at the edge of your seat. I've sold most of my games for my playstation as a result of obtaining PS2. I will never sell this game. As Triple H says. "It's That Dam Good." Watch out for the Attack Dogs, they have good AI. In fact every zombie and creatures have good AI. Remember if you play the entire game, you'll be rewarded greatly.

This is a great game! Good story line and great graphics for a PS game. Controls are a little hard to get used to though. This is one of the hardest Resident Evil games out and it is very challenging. I recommend it to your collection!

This game is something amazing. You can't say anything about it. Zombies are living in the house, and you can't get out of it, there are a lot of creatures living in the house, but you can't get out from this nightmare. Is the best on the series, FEAR is the perfect word for this gamee, if suspense doesn't kill you, something else will...

Resident Evil is a mixed blend of action, role-playing, and horror. Imagine playing a horror movie, or even better, your scariest nightmare in a video game. Imagine playing a game that is so scary, you can't sleep at night without thinking about it. That's Resident Evil. This is one of those games that needs to be placed in the Hall of Fame. This is truly a classic!
