One classic RPG, one unreleased gem

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 3

Author: Amazon User

Now this is gonna sound complicated: all Final Fantasy games were released in Japan first(and still are) then they come here. Well back when we had NES/SNES, they released Final Fantasy 1, Final Fantasy IV, and Final Fantasy VI and renamed them to 1, 2, and 3 respectively. So once Final Fantasy VII(probably the best RPG ever created and I don't throw that around lightly) came out in 1997, people went "whoa, 7? what about 4 to 6?" Enter Anthology, Chronicles and Origins and the recently announced Final Fantasy III remake for the DS. This review deals with Final Fantasy Anthology, containing V and VI

Final Fantasy V

Story: Bartz, Reina, Garaf and Faris have to take down X-Death(dumbest FF villain name ever) from controlling 4 crystals. Maybe it's my status as a post VI-player but it must've been irritating saving those damn crystals over and over.

Graphics: They're pretty standard really, I mean this is the Super Nintendo so they're not great, even for SNES standards. The FMV's of course are cool.

Music: Pretty good but not spectacular like IV or VI.

Gameplay: It excels for one reason: The Job System. For the first time, you can customize your characters rather than just being one particular class. Master one job, move to another. The story is eh, music's ok, but play it cause it's a FF.

Final Fantasy VI

Story: They're existed once powerful beings called Espers many centuries ago. Now they're gone and the world is in an Industrial Revolution-like setting with airships and weaponry. A soldier of the Empire, Terra, was used for battle and after being free of mind control, joins a group of resistance members planning to take down the Empire.

Graphics: For the most part the graphics are great for the SNES era. They're still not as sharp/detailed as Chrono Trigger or even colorful like Yoshi's Island but they work in the end.

Sound/Music: The music here is usually cited as the best Uematsu soundtrack he's done. While personally I go with VII, VI is by no means a flawed soundtrack. There's tons of great themes: catchy ones, emotional ones and epic ones like Terra's Theme, Forever Rachel, Aria de Mezzo Caraterre and Dancing Mad.

A HUGE cast list with 14 playable characters, still the largest cast in a Final Fantasy game. While it's nice to have variety, some don't get as much story as they should've. Ones like Celes, Terra, Locke and Setzer have substanstial backstory while others might just join your party and that's it. The game brings in the Esper System. It's not a wild departure like Junctioning but essentially you can equip an Esper to use in battle and after each battle you get points to learn a spell. Learn it and on to the next one. Finish them all and you can pick someone else.

While V is merely playable for the Job system and the fact it's a FF game, VI is required playing for an RPG fan.

The best role playing game.. ever.

..but if you're thinking of buying this game for your 8 yr. old kid, watch out. This ain't one of those "Sonic/Donkey kong" games. This a role playing game based on a magnificent story, colorful characters, awesome musical scoring, cinematics, and puzzles.

One other thing people who aren't familiar with RPG's (role-playing games) should know is that you can't finish this game in one seating. The game is pretty much like watching a movie or reading a book and you're the star. You control the characters and make the decisions for them. You're in charge. The outcome of the game depends on your skills, and the choices you make while completing your quest in defeating the bad boss and saving the world.

Actually, this is more than a game. It's an experience and
I fully recommend this game for those who are into wild adventures.

However, this game can get really addictive. If you're the
compulsive type ,you might not see the light of day for a few weeks. But dont fret, that only proves how awesome this game really is.

If you're not sure, try downloading a SNES emulator and a ROM version of the game from the internet and try it out. I played this game 11 years ago back in high school.I found it again and it still rocks my socks off. Have fun!

Started it all...

If you want unreal graphics, ground shaking sound, and an incredible soundtrack, move along kids. If you want one out of the two best RPGs EVER, BUY THIS NOW (the other being FFII/FFIV US/JAP available in FF Chronicles). Either will get you hooked on the FF series. After playing these, you will have an entirely different view on the new FF. These games set foundation for which all RPGs have been built on since.

The Best Fantasy AND How To Fix the Load Time Problem

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 3

I've noticed a couple people complain about the load times (especially during battles). There's a quick and easy fix for PS2 owners: In the main menu under the PS1 Driver, there's a setup option for "Fast Loading". When you turn that on, the game will load as fast as the original cartridge did. Problem solved.

.

And now for the game: FF6 *is* the best version of Final Fantasy made to date (imho). FF7, FF9, and FF10 are also very good, but FF6 got the RPG formula perfect: Great characters, great story, great battle system. If I had to sell all my RPGs, FF6 is the one I would keep & play over-and-over.

As for FF5, the story is rather weak, but the gameplay is really really good, thanks to the job system (like FF10-2). What I like to do with FF5 is to experiment:
- What if I had 4 white mages?
- What if I had 4 black mages?
- What if I had 4 fighters?
- Would I survive the battles w/ such weak teams?

Thanks to its job system, FF5 has a great deal of replayability. Even after you beat the game, you can go back and replay with a completely different team, and new complications (trust me, beating this game with 4 black mages is NOT easy).

Bottom Line: Buy Final Fantasy 5/6 right now. If you're like me, you'll cherish it forever.

nothing else can touch it...

FFVI is the end-all best game ever created. The story line is simply out of this world. The game grips you from the beginning and never lets go. The interaction between the main characters is incredible. The game creates the most haunting mood of any game ever released, despite the now primitive graphics and sound. I have gone years without playing the game before but the story, environments, villains and even some of the music would still stand out in my mind. This game simply leaves an impression on you unlike any other video game ever could.
After playing through it, every other game out there just seems void of content. No other Final Fantasy installment can touch this one (FFVII is a distant second). This will likely remain the best game ever created unless it is completely remade with today's technology, but even that is questionable as the SNES graphics give an incredible atmosphere to the game anyway.

My only complaint with this particular title is the result of its adaption to the Playstation. The new cinema cut scenes do not come even remotely close to doing this game justice. Some of the sound didn't carry over well either, and the addition of load times isn't exactly a welcome one. Despite these shortcomings, it's still the complete game, which is all that matters.
FFVI was absolutely breathtaking in every aspect when it was released, and remains so to this day. The story, the music, the characters and the gameplay are still better than anything today's games have to offer. Anyone who has yet to experience this incredible adventure is only keeping themselves from one of the most engaging stories ever.

Nice package!

This is a nice package of my two favorite Final Fantasy games: Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy V.

Final Fantasy V has never seen release here and I feel that the translation was both well done and sensitive to the original Japanese version. Final Fantasy VI has been restored to its original glory in this version and it's a nice change to see uncensored graphics and the original "Final Fantasy VI" title with Tina(Terra) in Magitek armor.

I highly recommend this collection!

A Good Investment

Two great RPG's in one package. Playstation owners who began Final Fantasy with the 7th installment can finally see what all the hype is about with VI. Final Fantasy V is also a great game, the first in the series where you spend alot of time in the menu combining abilities with accessories/equipment to customize your characters.

The only downside is the short load times when entering battles/opening the menu/entering new levels. However, these never last more than a few seconds.

Whether you're discovering the SNES generation of Final Fantasy for the first time or re-visiting the classics, Final Fantasy Anthology offers a great gaming experience that you can only get on a console.

Don't claim to be a FF fan if you have not experienced this!

Final Fantasy Anthology is truly a blessing to the new generation of FF fans. If you started out with the PS FFs, then you probably did not play the older ones. This compilation combines FFV and, most importantly, FFVI. FFV introduces the fantastic job system, but it is a very average game. The only reason you simply must buy this is FFVI. Considered as the best game in the series by many fans, this game is simply amazing. Although lacking in graphics by today's standard, almost every other aspect of this game beats the best of today's games! Be it the characters, story or music, FFVI is truly a masterpiece. I gave this a four-star rating only because the graphics don't match today's standards.

see i have discovered one thing about final fantasy players, they all just love the first one, it doesnt matter wich one was, unless it really sucked like x-2, i played the VIII first and i think it is the best one of all, but everyone that played the VII first say that that one is the best, ok now that i explained that lets talk obout this game. It is great see from 4 to 8 final fantasy the saga was awesome, from 1 to 3 it was pretty good, but from 9 to X-2 it has been losing a lot of potencial, they have started to fill cd and dvds with great graphics but no great strory line, they have lost a lot in the last years on that side, in this pack it is the number 5 and 6 , six is one of the best one of the saga, it has a great story line, great graphics fot gba, is a long story so that you really get to know the game and characters, and a very challenging game, the final fantasy V is also preety good , it has a lot of the six one on it but it wasnt developed as well, so i will recomend this game to anyone that is loking for a old school final fantasy.

Nice to have it on PS, but I like the original better

5 stars for FFVI: The port came over nicely. Graphics were preserved, and some additional FMV's were added (always a nice touch). They messed with the sound a bit, though. I noticed a slight change in item drops from random encounters as well (some items aren't as easy to get). Other than that, it's not bad. Highly recommended if you can't get your hands on the original.

FFV was a waste of my time, however. I couldn't get into the story or any of the characters. It comes with VI, so give it a shot anyway. You might like it.
