Awesome game. Awesome graphics. If you like space-age strategy games you definately have to try this game out.

Not a significant improvement over Homeworld 1

Homeworld 2 seemed like a great game concept, so much potential, the first game seemed so simple, yet so amazing. I was really looking forward to the sequel, but unfortunately very few risks were taken by the publisher...

I think the original Homeworld's success was the emotional content... and also the angelic nature, almost a religious experience. The sound and the visuals, the voice, was from the heavens.

In fact I`d go as far as to say that HW2 is pointless, and not even `more of the same`! I found the single player missions boring, just sending my craft forward and back, forward and back defending or attacking pre-defined waves of things. Once you failed the mission once, the 2nd time you`d win because the attack patterns of the enemy were the same, all scripted (i.e. no strategic enemy AI)

And the coolest things have been taken out! Where is the Sphere and wall formations?! - if you played the first one you`ll be familiar with the amazing spectacle of creating a sphere formation, and setting it to GUARD your mother ship.... WOW! Try it... Also works with your carriers etc... but not in HW2!
The formations are far more conventional in HW2. Very flat and boring.

The frontend is pretty much the same, the ingame art just seems upgraded (more polygons and textures, more detail) rather than better as such, sort of what you`d minimally expect and nothing more. The whole thing just doesn't feel fresh like the original did back in '99.

The UI is behind the times, and hasn't seen enough improvements... games like Stronghold have a much better system where you can easily select all the units of a single type within a larger selection of mixed units.

I suggest getting a copy of HW1 and completing it, it's a much more involving experience. Playing against another player without the ship number restrictions is highly recommended... you can fill the screen with ships - the dogfights are a spectacle to behold.

The Playable Demo Promises Great Excitement

I am not a real "gamer" in the sense of so many who live to play these games. However, I do have a few that I deeply love, including the Civilization franchise, and Homeworld.

I have spent a couple of hours playing the downloadable Demo version of HW2 (which includes the first couple of "missions" plus the multiplayer module) and I must say I'm favorably impressed.

The graphics, etc., are not, in my opinion, that far above the quality of the original 1999 game (thought that may be owing to the fact that my computer and my graphics adapter are NOT top-of-the-line, but decidedly middle-of-the-road), but they do satisfy. The storyline is about on a par with that of HW:C (that is, from the backstory plus the cut-scenes from the first two missions, it appears to be true), which is to say it isn't as "awe-inspiring" as that of the original Homeworld, which was filled with a sense of mystery and trekking into the unknown.

Still, it'll do, and I am sure many surprises await next week, when the game officially goes on sale.

The tutorial which accompanies the Demo must not be complete, because there are obviously quite a few aspects of the game, such as Research, that have been "enhanced" to be more complex (for one thing, it appears that Research now directly requires resources) but they aren't covered in the tutorial. I'm sure that the "final" tutorial will cover them.

All in all, I am looking very much forward to the version of the game I actually have to pay for!

The Best Game ever made continues...

I've played a multitude of games in my day and not yet have I ever come across a better gaming experience than Homeworld. The graphics, music, effects, sounds, story and total game play was super fantabulous! I was not as impressed with Cataclysm (the expansion) but I plan to be first in line to get my copy of Homeworld 2. I have no doubt that it will be worth the incredibly long wait they've put us through for this one! My only hope is that number 2 lasts twice as long because I hated to see the end of the first one.

Good for the money

I picked up this game, borer with the games I had. I had heard good things about Homeworld 1 and, being a fan of RTS game, thought this would be good for the price. The main campaign is set in outerspace. Control the mothership and fleet of the Higaaran empire, whos trying to get a hold of some artifacts to control a giant ancient dreadnaught. The enemy is an evil guy bent on the same goal but for nefarious purposes. The graphics are amazing. Its fully 3D, you can zoom in and out, rotate, get right up next to ships... stuff like that. Fun game, but a lot of it is just get as much ore as you can and build the bigget baddest ships you can. I found the need for stratagy somewhat lacking. I also beat the game in about a week. there are 14 levels in the main game. There is also a Player VS CPU game which is just a skirmish between you and up to 7 opponants. You can play as either the Higaaran or the Vagyr. You can ally with CPUs and set their difficult from easy to expert. In my opinion the Player VS CPU games are the most fun.

Althought this game is beautiful to look at, and exciting for a while, there is not much variation in how to play the game. Same units every time, only one resource, gets boring quickly. So in conclusion, its a fun game, for a while, and for the money. I still hold out that original Total Annihilation was the best RTS ever made.

The story, action, and strategy is GREAT!!!

I bought this game after it was out about 1 month. I installed it, though of it as a little weird, interface was alot different, then I got use to it and I was thinking to my self like WOW!!!! I love this game to death. After about 2 days I mastered the key to this game, having tons of fighters, corvettes, bombers, and your nice frigates and capital ships, not to mention your battlecrusiers. But after I mastered what is needed in every mission to defend and win each one I had no trouble getting through all missions above mission 3 ( well I had trouble but it was easier hehe )

Now, in homeworld you run out of resources alot of the time. In homeworld 2, you don't. You always have enough resources if you have a knack for being a good commander. Me, im excellent at commanding and I could always replace my lost battlecrusier or frigate, and I liked that alot.

The enemy is very fast at attacking but you can be even faster at attacking I realized. Just speed think like I do and its all a go. The grahpics are amazing!! the best I ever seen in my life!! The story is wild and excellent!! Gameplay is a jewel! I tell you, if you're a excellent Homeworld player than this is your game, its not a waste of money at all!!!

Too hard for a newcomer

I bought this game today and played it tonight.

First, about me: I'm 35. I'm not new to computer games - I'd list computer games as one of my top, if not the, top hobbies.

I don't consider myself stupid: I have both a helicopter and plane licence.

I enjoy RTS and first person shooter games. I have owned an N64 and Dreamcast, and I now own an XBox and a high-end (gaming) PC.

I saw this game and thought I'd give it a try. I like RTS and this was labelled as RTS.

An earlier reviewer said 'Trying to fight off the constant barrage of enemies whilst also trying to get at the resources whilst also complete your objectives' (my words paraphrasing). It's true - I too just want to relax and play, not be driven out of my mind and frustrated at this game.

This game will be returned tomorrow.

If you're a Homeworld fan, then perhaps you're used to it, if you're a newcomer, you'll probably be tearing your hair out at this game - I am.

Oh, one more thing: the tutorial is *NOT* comprehensive enough. It teaches only the basics, and you're left to fathom out the rest in game (whilst constantly being barraged by enemies, etc, etc, etc).

Nice upgrades

If you do not have Homeworld 1 you really should get it. I have seen it listed for less than $10.00. Buy both! They should be on your game shelf. (That's if you like these sort of games ;))

This game is kind of like the Command and Conquer series(Except it's based in space). You have resources to collect(Mine asteriods and recycle larger ships)and research to conduct in order to upgrade your fleet.
(Easy to grasp, Hard to Master)

Homeworld 2 didn't mess up a mustard sandwich, usually second installments of games screw up the interface that made the game so enjoyable to play. Sierra has kept the same type of interface and added more features to the user interface.

The ships are substantially much improved and it looks like the research will bring some interesting ships to the mix. I can't wait for the release.

The really cool feature is to zoom in on particular ships to watch them fire a volley and watch the rounds explode on the enemy ships.

Wait till you play the lan game! you will be sweating the whole time.

Remember how good Homeworld was? Prepare to be disappointed.

The graphics are improved, the engine is improved, the game play sucks. No longer are you thinking about what to build, how to maneuver your formations and where to have them focus. This is bigger picture, and I honestly think it takes most of the fun away from the old one. If they only improved the originals graphics and added a few more ships and another great story. This story is terrible, and almost non existent. No book breaking down everything for you like the original had, no feeling of discovery, and none of the personal attachment or feeling of control you felt in the first one. Formations have been replaced with types of doctrinalish tasks like Frigate Screen. Instead of building your own formations out of whatever you liked and moving it how and where you liked, now you build fleets you have little control over. Not gratifying. You don't build individual units like you did in the first one, except on the frigate and above level. Now you build little wings of 3 or so that do your bidding. The worst thing they screwed up was the research. No longer do you research for you fleet in general, now every ship must have a research facility installed on its actual superstructure (read: money invested in worthless technology you already own on another vessel to move on to the next stage...). Lots of money spent on the R&D. Nothing was simple about this game, and Sierra let us all down. Great ideas like upgrades and disabling specific portions of enemy capital ships sound great in theory, but fail to turn into fun once the gaming starts. If you never played the first one, maybe this will be satisfying, but I have my doubts. Look elsewhere. If you enjoyed the first one, don't bother with this one, look elsewhere. Or stick with the original. Think of it like the 2nd and 3rd Matrix movies that you wish never existed.

this game is well phat

the predercesor of this game was brillaint now they've done it up even better and they've added a better story line with better ships. they've also added a better graphics engine so it will be much better when playing. the story is a warrior race called the vaygr want to conquer the univers, you are the only species that can defend its self from this barbaric race, not even the bentusi can help. you will find this sequal much better than homeworld 1 and homeworld catalcysm, enjoy.......
