Yu-Gi-Oh! in England

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 1
Date: December 20, 2004
Author: Amazon User

Let me start by saying: This is a very good game! It is a bit unconventional
since it changes some of the traditional ideas behind Yu-Gi-Oh! but overall it
does follow the basic rules. The graphics are not very special, but it is still
nice and fits the game well. You can opt to turn off the 3D combat if it starts
to bore you.

Because it is a bit different, many people don't want to take the effort to
learn to play the game so I decided to write a bit more informative review and
small primer that explains a bit about the game so you could learn more about
it. You might like it... or perhaps you won't. In either case I think it is worth
a look... ^_^ BTW, some of the rule differences are explained by the old English
setting, saying that these parts of the original game were lost by modern times.

So what is different? Cards are played on a board that has squares of different
terrain. The terrain affects your mosnters. For example Sea type terrain adds 500
points to Water based monsters like Fish, Sea Serpent, Aqua, Thunder while it will
substract 500 from Machine and Pyro type monsters. There are lots of other types of
terrain like Wasteland (Zombies and Dinos love it ;) Forest, Mountain and even a
few special ones like Toon, Crush, and Labyrinth. You'll learn about them as you play.
Cards are placed on this board and each card can move or perhaps attack once on your
own turn. Cards can be triggered or otherwise activated based on what your opponent
decides to do.

Life Points (LPs) are also handled a bit differently. Instead of the in match
going after the player's own LPs, you have a special card in play called the Deck
Leader. Your Deck Leader is always placed on the board at the beginning of the duel.
It is automatically face up and visible to your opponent. It can be moved around
just like any other card, but it CAN NOT attack your enemy. Your own LPs are tied
to your deck leader. Successful direct attacks against your deck leader will deplete
your LPs. As you place more cards on the field (the board) from your hand you use
those cards to protect your Deck Leader and to attack the enemy.

Many cards can be combined (fused) to either power them up or create different,
usually more powerful creatures. There are over 800 cards so there are tons of neat
combinations.

In the beginning it may be more difficult since your starting deck of 40 cards
is kind of random based on which deck leader you choose. One strategy that may make
it easier to get started is to pick a deck leader that is centered toward a specific
element like Water (Aqua) and then hope that you will have magic cards or monsters
that can transform terrain. It is a very powerful way of turining the tides on your
favor. Monsters that transform terrain on a card flip are especially useful since
your enemy may be attacking you confidently with a possible terrain advantage on
their own turf, just to find out that once they attack your unknown monster they
have lost that advantage, and it may even be unfavorable to them, which means that
now they are 500 or 1000 points down, while you are suddenly up by 500 points! ^_^

Play around a bit and see what you think... The game has quite a few nice ideas
and lots of variety so it can be tons of fun once you get the hang of it. Enjoy!

Great game, but not normal Yu-gi-oh

This game is a lot of fun. I've played it many times all the way through using different starter decks. You just have to put in an hour or two to get past the introduction and get into the game play. If you expect this to be like the Yu-gi-oh card game, you'll be upset. But if you pretend this is a brand new strategy game that just happens to have Dark Magician, then it will be a lot of fun.

Warning - because the rules are complicated at first, younger kids will get frustrated easily. My little brother and sister (ages 7 and 5) have NO desire to play this game. But I play it any chance I can - it's fun having a game where strategy can make up for a weak deck!!!

DO NOT RENT OR BUY IT, NEVER!

Woh woh woh! I bought this gae...and returned it the next day. I am a huge video game fnand Duelists of the roses is the worst game i've ever played. I'd rathe buy Hey You Pickachu! When you play you have to put a monster on the field and move it up spaces to attack their deck leader. Also, they can attack your magic and trap cards. And when you start out with a hand you always get the suciest cards and thecomputr gets teh best cards. I could go on ad on about how bad it is.

Good Game. You need to think more than most games.

This game is a good all around game. The gameboard is alot like chess, certain monsters can move more than others on certain terrains. The ability to change the terrain also helps in the strategy.
Also, you can't just stack your deck to over power your opponent. Each area has deck point restrictions, making your card choices crucial.
The only negative I have found is, when you play your cards are given to you in a random order, the computer however seems to constantly draw powerful card combinations in the same order on a constant basis. This makes it a bit unfair at times, but yet predictable and challenging.
All in all, if you like yu-gi....or chess, you'll like this game.

I finished the game

Yu-Gi-Oh for ps2 was a good interpritation of the game Duel Monsters. Much better than Forbiden Memmories (ps1). First of all, if you lose a duel the game is not over. Another plus is that in the custumise deck screen, when you press down on the Right analog stick you can input passcodes for free. You can only use a code once. I recogmened Mirror wall. The oponent will still try to attack even though the monsters points decreas by half. Once you have comlpited the whole game you can go back and duel any oponent and get more cards. The major draw back is that you cannot have your deck be stronger than your opponet's. I recogmened this game to any Yu-Gi-Oh fan even though it is a short game. It's all about replay value.

Worthwhile

I bought this game just this week and already find myself hooked. But be warned this game is not for those who are easily frustrated. You've probably heard that there are over 680 3-D rendered monsters, and that's true, but this game is all about strategy and outhinking your opponents, knowing what monsters to use in certain situations. During the game you must select a deck with which to duel, and pick wisely because the deck you choose could mean a constant losing streak resulting in constant restarts. The graphics are somewhat on par with those of the Final Fantasy series (it's like a constant summoning of monsters). And in closing this game is right up there with some of the best in terms of strategy and graphics, but don't be fooled it's not as easy as you think

Good But Not Great

I thought that this Yu-gi-oh game was pretty good, but don't expect a normal Yu-gi-oh game because it is nothing like all the other games. This game is more like a chess game or stratego style game than a card game. I gave this game 4 stars because of the strategy involved and the great graphics.

Have to give it a chance....

I admit, when I first started playing the game I wasn't impressed, because I just kept losing duel after duel, but after a bit I started to get the hang of it and learn a few useful tactics, and now I almost can't get enough about it. The computer is frustrating because it already knows all the card combos and how cards interact with eachother as well as spellbinding and terrain bonuses, but I'm catching on. I think the game is alot of fun, but chances are good that you won't feel that way the very first time you play, but if you want to get your moneys worth... just take the time to learn it.

I own and play this game, but you should rent it first...

I don't know if any of the other people who reviewed this game are true gamers, but I am one. As far as Yu-Gi-oh goes, I know more than the average person and am considered a reluctant fan. This game is definitely meant for a slightly older audience since the strategy may be a little too tough for younger people. Nonetheless, I solved the puzzle of the first few matches and found the strategy needed to be a lot of fun, in fact, more fun than the traditional Yu-Gi-oh card game in which the person with the best cards always wins (which is why I'm a reluctant fan.) Good strategy can win you duels here. But, I do have to say that the game is a little slow to start off with and does require some patience to get into. If you do get into it though, it can become pretty fun. Obviously, Yu-Gi-oh fans are probably better suited for this game. And everyone is advised to rent it first.

For someone who wants a challenge

This game is extremly challenging but fun once you find a good fusion. I think it is a great game but not a have to buy. The game play is wierd but it adds a new twist to some games that are relativly easy. Somone who wants a challenge and is up to many loses should try this game. The only advice im going to give you is play yourself in a custom duel. When the oponent makes a fusion ( they have the exact same deck as you ) look at their graveyard and see what cards they put together.
