This game blows.....period

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 8 / 21

Don't be fooled by the advertisments that you see in almost every magazine. Blitz doens't offer the career mode that it was based around and game play itself is horrible.

The greatest inconvience of the game is the load times. They are WAY too long. Loading up your profile is an inconvience, loading up to play the game gets annoying and when you finish a game and go to save, you start to think "F*ck this". The loading time alone will kill the feeling of wanting to play.

Then there is the gameplay itself. Bone crushing hits? Please, outside of the occasional dirty hit (which is far easier for the computer to employ on you, than vice versa) the hits look like the early developments of Madden. The plays are fairly easy until you get to the 4th quater when it seems that everytime the computer magically can score 21 points no matter what defensive strategies you employ. Then there is the whole steriods issue which is laughable. Give a player some juice and he misses 3 plays.....conventionally treat him and he misses a quater. Either way, you'll never miss him.

This game is horrible, from the graphics to the load times. Save your money and go buy a game that will at least remotely capture your interest.

This game is not about football...it is novelty

This is a novelty game. It you want a football game don't buy this one. There is no strategy involved in this one. It's all about the clash mode. You just go back and forth with one play touchdowns, boring. This game is more about the claps, which involves drugs, money and women. Oh, I forgot the cuss words. The use of foul language adds to the novelty of the game but adds nothing to the sport of football. I was hoping to find a game that could be substituted for Madden, but this was nothing more than a waste of money.

Garbage.

Can't believe I bought this one because of the hype surrounding it. I was expecting hard hits, and such. But I was also expecting atleast some decent gameplay to go with it. Everytime I see LT in the commercials claiming this is how "real football is played", I think sellout. How can a former NFL player say real football is 7 on 7, and most tackles are closelines, and dropkicks? Haven't seen that game on tv yet. Anyways, this is a really bad simulation even for an arcade style game.

We may need Terminix on this one..............

I would sincerely love to tell you how much I liked and/or disliked this game; the problem is that I cant get it to play on playstation2 for longer than 1:47 into the first quarter without it crashing..over and over and over again....and no my playstation2 is fine if thats what youre thinking. This game has obviously not been properly tested (before they unleashed it onto the gaming market), for bugs and programming problems. I have NEVER played a playstation2 game that has crashed as consistently or as often as this piece of garbage, and it seems to me that they spent a hell of alot more cash marketing this turd, than actually making sure the game played smoothly and without problems. To me that sucks big time and it pisses me off a great deal. I think it may have had the potential to be a great football game, had it not been for their rush to get it out without proper testing. Its just a good thing these clowns arent making cars (or parachutes). Unfortunately I wouldnt recommend it, unless you want to wait for the first waive of recalls, and maybe pick it up after they get it to work. The game IS very good for listening to gangsta rap while you wait for the graphic engine to start running again (during yet another crash), that is if the audio doesnt start skipping indefinitely first. I think whoever made this game should have stuck to writing code for "Zork" on the Commodore 64, because PS2 is obviously out of their league, and I for one am getting my money back. If you want to get really aggravated and ruin your night, this is a must buy!! I award Lawrence Taylor no points..and may god have mercy on his soul....

Sh*ty Game

I mean the songs no one has ever heard of them. And one of the stupid songs says I don't hemmy h*ll what. And another song is football players singing and the chearleaders going ooie ooie in a high pitch voice and they play it every 5 seconds. Then its time to talk about the computers god powers. In campaign mode you start with a team that are all c's and d's for the player's rankings. Oh the sh*t keeps rolling because all the other teams you play in the game are all A+'s as the player's rankings. But the Sh*t keeps rolling because every pass you throw is tipped in the air an makes this annoying sound like zoink and when it is always intercepted unless you happen to get lucky and you catch the ball then they hit you so damn hard that you fumble the ball and it breaks your player's spine which brings out the worst in your team because after they injur a few people you will be stuck with your 4th and 5th string players. That's when the god powers come into play because they run so much faster than all the other players that it takes 3 pretty good hits then they just stumble to the ground or sometimes they will just keep going ignoring the hard hit you just put on them. If you happen to hit them hard which never happens then they won't fumble and they won't get injured. I hit a quarterback 5 times in a row an 2 hits was an unleash and he kept going with no injuries. If you don't get them on the first hit they use god like powers to run super fast and push over your players and sometimes they will jump 14 feet over your defense and run for a touchdown. If you are a true gamer and you have a gameshark there is no cheats for this game. So if you lose to many times in campaign it start forcing you to play the same team until you beat them. Most games at that point will take you 4 tries to beat the team. The drugs take 3 games until they make you better then it doesn't even make you that much better. Overall I just played this game because I rented it an wanted to beat it to prove that I could beat the game even with all the god powers.

Fun, if you can deal with waiting 12 minutes to start the game

The title says it all, this game takes 12 minutes to load and get to the point where you can play one player campaign mode. Havent timed the two player mode load time yet, but i expect it to be very close.

Don't fall for the advertisement

FIRST.. let me say that the majority of Madden fans are not going to like this.

SECOND.. This is not, i repeat, not a Football game.

and THIRD.. this review is based on the PS2 Version

This is my honest opinion, this game is just a fancier version of NFL Blitz. Blitz the League is all about one thing, the bone-breaking hits. Stratergy don't matter. Lets talk about the PS2 Version... Load times, not only impossibly long, you aren't really sure if it is doing anything. Also once you made a decision to look at a feature, it doesnt give you a chance to back out. You have to wait until the feature load, and then you can back out, which also takes a bit to load. It also takes a long while for the game to save to your memory card.

And now for the game features..
If you want to play as one of the good teams, the only way you can do that is in quick game. You cannot choose one of the previous made team (like the nightmares) and play a season with them. Personally this part of the game sucks. The only option is to create a non-existing team. Once the team is created (drafting, uniform choices, stadium choices, coaches), then you can start playing. The teams you go up against are superstars. They constantly go into the unleash mode and almost impossible to take them down.

Speaking of going into the unleash mode, it is difficult to pull of, as you have to hold down L2 and hit X.. and many times it does nothing.

Overall I can imagine the game being fun only in the head to head mode with a human, but as far as single mode playing, it wears thin quickly. Its just that their isn't anything special about it. I also would find that younger players would have a lot of fun with this, but the user of language makes this impossible to give this as a gift to anyone under 17. Also, I think anyone over 18 will find the game, kinda boring. Personally, I was over this game after about 90 minutes of game play. It's going to be a dust gatherer, unless i have company over and we want a good laugh, then we may put in blitz the league. Not as fun as being advertised.

Do you want to feel the pain?

If you do, buy this game. I have not played in any other mode besides campaign mode; however, in campaign mode the computer has super-human powers. Someone could have a monster lead in this game and the computer would find a way to come back in the fourth quarter. For example, several times I've had good-sized leads against the computer and several times the computer has ended up winning because something unrealistic will happen, like you will fumble the ball on every possesion or the ball will get tipped and the defense will intercept it--on every possesion towards the end of the game. The only reason I rated the game better than I rated the fun of the game is because the graphics of the game are good. In addition, I think that clash mode is a terrible idea. It works more to the computers benefit than it does yours. Yes, you can execute dirty hits but it's much harder for you to perform them than it is for the computer to execute them. In other words, prepare to fumble the ball alot and have alot of injuries because the computer is going to hit you more than you're going to hit it's players. I purchased this game because I thought it would be a updated version of the old arcade stlye blitz--which I really liked as a kid. If you're expecting that prepared to be disappointed.

A Purist's Opinion

I am an old school football purist who appreciates realistic simulations like NCAA & Madden. I usually don't pay any attention to arcade style games like NFL Street, etc. mainly due to the mindless silliness and unrealistic gameplay that turn football fans like me off. But, Blitz has always been an amusing detour if you need a timeout from the real gridiron so here's a nice review for those of you who fancy the idea at giving this one a look.

This latest PS2 version definitely has it's entertaining moments, from the storyline cut scenes in "Campaign" mode to the brash obscenities the players shout at each other between plays on the field. Fans of the older games need to take note that this isn't NFL Blitz. There are no National Football League teams/players/commentators in this one hence the subtitle "The League". Blitz has evolved into a strand-alone football game with it's own fantasy teams and players. The game really captures your interest in "Campaign" mode as you basically begin with watching your team get decimated at the previous season's end and shoved into division 3 as the franchise owner demands redemption. You customize your team by picking a city, stadium, coaches, team name, uniforms, equipment, etc. Once you're prepared you hit the field and begin your quest to get back into the limelight and out of the laughing stock of the league.

During actual gameplay, fans of the older Blitz games should feel right at home. The main play control engine follows the same basics as before, but with added modes like "Clash" and "Unleash". Engaging your "Clash" energy (by holding down L2) while on defense gives you an added striking capability where you can perform a "dirty hit" to force fumbles and injuries where you actually get to see the bones(s) break. And if one of your players goes down you'll usually have two options of either treating the wound normally which will sideline your player the longest, whether it be for several quarters or full games. Your other choice is to "juice" which will give your trainer permission to give your player an illegal injection to get you back in the game almost immediately. But be careful! Get caught juicing and you'll face fines and sanctions. Using "Clash" on offense gives your QB added passing strength/accuracy as well as increasing the chance of your receiver catching a clutch throw. "Clash" can also help your running back avoid tackles by stiff-arming and spinning.

Then, there's "Unleash" which occurs when you have 6 "clash" icons built up. "Unleash" is a major adrenaline boost that gives the user the maximum amount of momentum and maximizes the likelihood of successfully completing a play.

Also, using "Clash" & "Unleash" will contribute to "dirty hits", which will eventually lead to a brawl where an all-out melee occurs and the two teams knock the crap out of each other for about 10 seconds to see who can build up "late hits."

I have to touch on the language. Wow, this game is a lot like "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas" with it's realistic jargon whether it be spouted from the players, the coach, owner, or your offensive coordinator who chimes in from the box with his sarcastic comments when he's happy or ticked. You'll even hear the "F" word here and there. Very cool - lol. And obviously parents, you don't want your kids playing this. Pay attention to the "M" rating on the box. "M" meaning "for mature audiences." It's an adult game, make no mistake.

There are other funny elements of the game like getting the opportunity to buy escort girls to send to the hotel room of the visiting team to "wear them out" before the game the next day. Players get arrested on drug charges and whatnot. Right now there is a sub-plot going on between one of my players and one of our cheerleaders - lol. Many aspects of the game are very intriguing and hold your interest to make you want to see what happens next.

Okay, here's the bad part - at least for me. Again, I'm a purist. I appreciate the real aspects of the game of football. Most of the unrealistic/comical parts of Blitz are fun, which is an element that the franchise has thrived on. But there's one thing about Blitz that has always irked the hell out of me and unfortunately this title is no different. The cpu keeps track of your progress and responds accordingly. Like if you intercept a ball and have a chance to go up big, watch your back because almost every single time they'll either force a fumble or pick off one of your passes or worse, injure one of your key players. If you go up a couple scores your turnover rate drastically increases. Any time the cpu needs a break in the game, it gets it. I hate that. In a real time simulation - if you do what you're supposed to do and perform well out there you'll execute and dispatch the opponent. You run your offense well and wear down the opponent's defense and vice versa. And if you screw up and the cpu goes up by a couple scores, you still have a chance to turn things around like in real life if you make the necessary adjustments and play smarter. In Blitz: you make one mistake and you could fall behind permanently. Real football doesn't work that way, unless it's just one of those days when you're not prepared or your opponent just plays a flawless game and out-hustles you. It's very unrealistic when you're late in the 2nd quarter and are about to score before the clock runs down and get the ball right back in the 2nd half when suddenly the cpu forces a fumble or picks off a wide-open pass, almost every single time. The same thing applies when you're ahead a couple scores. The cpu opponent magically transforms into a better team and starts a dramatic comeback, almost every single time. Challenging yes, but very unrealistic which takes away from the fun of the game and playing the game of football effectively. It's almost as if the cpu is programmed to apply a cheat code and get you back for beating it's @$$, like a sore loser. NBA Jam, another Midway game for PS2 is the same way. That's my only gripe. Other than that it plays really well and is fun besides getting frustrated over silly cpu momentum. If you're cool with that you probably won't have any complaints. And as always, if you get tired of the cpu's "cheating" tactics you can always pop your NCAA or Madden back in and go back to work in the real sense.

All-in-all, "Blitz: The League" is a pretty fun game. It has it's flaws as with any title, but even for us true purists it's a nice, amusing timeout.
