Almost perfect!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 7 / 8

This game is as close as a game can get at this time to "the holy grail of gaming" where newbies find it accessible and hardcore gamers find it challenging. Part time gamers have very good access to it, (though not perfect, see some of the respawning complaints for further details) and marathon gamers can follow the singular, linear story line for days, not hours, at a time.

A warning though, this is not a game to play on your lunch hour (though I wish that I actually had a "thorns" aura on a previous job) as you will either play well past the end of your lunchtime or find that the first person you see after you quit the game you'll want to beat into unconsciousness to see how much gold pops out. Not good (no really, you can't play Diablo II in jail). Either way, this is one of the only games you will buy in your lifetime that you will be actively playing 3 YEARS from now! How can I make this claim. I actively played it's predecessor for 3 years and it was nowhere as rich in detail nor story. Some may wish for a Diablo III (which WILL happen. You don't sell 2 Million copies in the first month and NOT have a sequel of some kind) to be out by Christmas. Not me. I am happy to wait for several years so that I have the time to fully explore the rich and vast world of Diablo II. It is the only game I am currently recommending (except for a reluctant nod to Unreal Tournament for those first-person junkies, God love 'em).

This Game is awesome! A must buy

Diablo 1 was an awesome game. Battlenet worked terrific except for the hackers. In Diablo, hundreds of weapon selections, 3 character selections each with unique characteristics. Diablo 2 Beta had a few bugs with the monster attack limit. On level 1, a skeleton could deal you 100 damage. In the final version, all these bugs will be fixed. Each character (of which there are 5) had 30 unique skills and spells, and different specialities in weapon wielding as well, I.E, an Amazon is a Bow and Javelin wielder yet the Amazon could wield a staff, but it would be pretty bad. You have more room in your pack to put things and you can also run, yet there is a limit to your running, it is called charisma. Some character's have more mana and health than others I.E, the Barbarian has hardly any mana but a whole lot of vitality. This game has excellent graphics and a terrific storyline. Get this game, it is awesome, you won't regret it.

Great game, but some MAJOR problems

I was excited when Diablo II finally arrived, and I bought it as soon as possible. However, upon the installation, I ran into various problems. It seems that the installation program has difficulty installing the file, d2char.mpg, when using a DVD-ROM. Blizzard is aware of this problem, but unfortunately they haven't released a fix for this conflict. So, if you have a DVD, beware before buying! Luckily, I had a CDRW that I could use instead to run and install Diablo II. Also, battle.net servers are unable to handle the heavy output of players, and the realms are frequently down. Unless you have DSL, cable, T1 or T3, you're out of luck on battle.net... at least until Blizzard upgrades the battle.net servers. The graphics are a bit outdated; the maximum resolution is 640x480 and on my 17" monitor, the images are "pixelly." However, the gameplay is great and the character classes add to enrich the entire gaming environment. But, I had pretty large expectations for this product, and because of the previous fundamental problems, I think Diablo II wasn't worth the wait.

Diablo II rocks!

I recomend Diablo II to everyone! It's the best game I have ever played. There is free internet play over battle.net™, which is great. The game isn't exactly an RPG, but more an adventure/action/RPG. Or as Blizzard Entertainment says, "We didn't make an RPG, we made Diablo." You choose from 5 completely unique from eachother character classes. Them being: Amazon, Barbarian, Paladin, Necromancer, Sorceress.

Amazon: A versatile character that specializes in throwing weapons such as spears and javelins and also if very handy with a bow. The Amazon also has some cool spells and passive magics.

Barbarian: A savage melee character with little or no "magic" spells. His 3 skill trees include, Combat Actions, War Cries, and Masteries.

Paladin: A very popular character played on battle.net. Paladins have "auras", which benifit themselves and other users that are on the Paladin's respective, "party".

Necromancer: A very interesting and powererful character. The Necromancer fancies raising dead victims of his own. He also has, "Poison and Bone" skill category, which is mostly offensive spells. The "Curses" section is another skill tree. However, the Summoning section seems to overpower the Curses + Poison and Bone.

Sorceress: She is the main magic character with all sorts of fancy spells. Her spells are devided into three sections, those being: Fire, Lighting, Cold. The Lightning section seems to be the most powerful, however. If you like a lot of powerful magics she is the character to choose.

The Name of the Game is: Addiction

An excellent game, and for me extraordinary due to the intelligence of its design. Blizzard has foreseen almost everything that players want, and want more of, and made the game incredibly addictive. Neither true RPG nor true adventure, Diablo 2 is a unique genre in itself by mixing the needs of modern-day short attention spans with the appeal of visceral action, plus the addictiveness of exploration and treasure finding. Add to this a highly flexible system for individualizing every character's skills, stats and strategies (something very few RPGs provide) - plus again, the intelligence that has gone into making it multiplayer viable - this is a mind-boggling game.

Even on a 17" monitor, the 640x480 graphics still look very good. With the release of the Expansion Set, you can go up to 800x600 - and probably never look back. Customisability (with equipment) has been greatly improved from Diablo 1, and the magic effects are utterly fascinating and innovative. The environmental sound effects are superb - the game even managed to fool my wife into thinking it was really raining outside! The music by Matt Uelmen provides excellent atmosphere.

Will you like this game? It depends - I think you will most likely enjoy it if: (1) You enjoy quick-paced action (but not too unstoppably fast), (2) You enjoy the concept of developing a character through collecting equipment, and (3) You are willing to think about strategy in a game that rewards both the "undiscerning" player and the meticulous strategist. Don't be fooled - the game looks simple, but its ingenuity is that it allows you to play it as simply as you want, or as complex as you desire.

Possibly the best Mac Game I have ever played. . .

First, let me say that I have been with the Macintosh since the late eighties. I always yearned to have access to the best games that my PC friends could play. Then, I happened on Diablo II. I love this game.

With this type of game, the person usually tires of it after one time through. Not with D2. I've played it three times completely through with three different characters. I still have more characters to go.

I had zero problems installing it on my G4. It wants some hard drive space and memory, but nothing out of the ordinary for this type of a game. Installation was not a problem.

If you want a thinking person's game, go elsewhere. This is pretty much a shoot anything that moves type of game and, in my opinion, the best in its class for the Mac. Hands down.

In fact, I like it SO much, I'm heading over to buy the expansion pack as soon as I sign off this review. Buy it. If you like fantasy games, you'll love this.

Excellent game

Diablo -- Lord of Terror, Stealer of Time. I was almost late towork one day because I foolishly thought I could easily complete a quest and still have enough time to get ready. This game is meant to be played for hours at a time. Luckily, the experience is rewarding.

Diablo II was obviously written by people who wanted to make a fun game. It is easy to get into the game even if you've never played the original. The learning curve is relatively gentle, as challenges can increase quickly, but not before you've mastered the basics.

For Mac users, I would recommend a two-button mouse. The game is designed to take advantage of the extra button. The other nice thing about this game from a Mac-user standpoint is that it was released at nearly the same time as the Windows version...

There is plenty of blood and guts, so parents may wish to cast an informed eye on the Mature rating. It is set in a fantasy world, however, so everything should be taken in context.

All in all, a truly fun game that promises to continue to steal hours of my time. In fact, I think I've already been away from it for too long...

Excellent! (but...)

Buy it!

Diablo II is basically Diablo with more ground to cover, NPC companions, more charater development/depth, improved graphics, more stuff to find and sell, more spells to cast, and more heads to bust. If you fell in love with Diablo, playing this will be love part deux. After playing a few levels, you'll be thinking about how you can play it again with a different character. How many other games can boast that kind of replayability? The "role playing" aspect has been greatly improved as has the NPC interaction. On top of the "hack-n-slash" is a rich story that gives the game character and fullness. The music, story, and environment all add up to an experience that stays with you long after you are done playing (like a really good book or movie).

It isn't perfect, though:

1) The NPC/Golems aren't too bright. They get lost if you take them on a jog through the dungeon and do things like attack your "bone wall" after you cast it to protect them. Duh!

2) The save game feature bites a dried corpse's hiney. You can't save "in the moment" anymore. You must "Save and Exit" which means leaving where you are and restarting in the last town you were in. All of the monsters reset, you lose your golem, and if you had to travel three dungeon levels down to get the your quest goal, but didn't quite make it, you have to start that march again. If you die, your corpse remains where you got whacked (with your gear) and you reappear in town unless you "save and exit". Doing that somehow brings your body/gear to town. This might give you a greater sense of urgency when it comes to taking on the minions of hell, but it's annoying when you have kids, work, wife, a life, etc. and get interupted or play at short intervals Vs. hours at a time.

3) Too much of a good thing. In Diablo the unique/magic items were a big deal. In Diablo II they are everywhere. The really good ones might not be, but there are so many magic goodies laying around you'd think the local order of magi had an enchantment blowout night and lit up every item around.

Everybody's a critic, though, so forget what I wrote and go buy the game. You won't be disappointed if you like the first one and like the sword and sorcery bit.

Diablo II will kill you with BOREDOM

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 6 / 7

Blizzard has fundamentally ruined the playability of the original Diablo by removing your ability/responsibility to regularly, explicitly Save your game.

In the original Diablo, if you didn't explicitly Save your game at frequent intervals, you faced the likelihood of *real* loss (of time, accumulated treasure, attributes, etc.) if you were unexpectly killed. In the original, once you were under attack the attack was often so fierce that it was too late to Save -- you were dead before you could complete a Save. And, even if you did Save at that point, when you resumed play you resumed right back in the heat of battle and, appropriately, were likely to be slaughtered within a heartbeat. In other words, you faced something akin to real death when exploring the dungeon and that produced an element of real fear.

In Diablo II, your game is continuously, automatically "Saved" for you. You can get out of ANY difficult situation by summarily quitting play -- when you resume play you'll find yourself automagically back at your safe "base camp" with your character, and all accumulated treasure, inexpicably intact. The authors don't try to "explain" this bit of absurdity -- probably because they know they can't.

The problem is made even worse by the fact that the monsters -- at least in the first 3 quests, which is as far as I've gone so far -- are hopelessly outclased by your character from the get-go. In my first eight hours of play I haven't come close to dying once -- and, believe me, I've tried (anything to relieve the boredom).

I LOVED the original Diablo and I expected to love this sequel. I don't feel good panning this game but I'm SO disappointed. I expected to see more detailed graphics and plot (quests), but with the fundamentals of play preserved. Instead, graphics and game plot appear unimproved and game play has been absolutely butchered. ...

After Beta testing I can assure you this is a must buy

A huge fan of the original I had to try for the Beta. I made it and I can assure you Blizzard took a great game and made it better. The customization of each individual character, the vastly improved graphics combine to make this game one of the best!
