Great 3rd Person Action / sailing vessel battle game

I bought this game mostly because it seemed somewhat similar to one of my favorite classic games from SSI for 8-bit 6502 based computers: Broadsides. The similarity between the two games ends with the sea battles between sailing warships. "Pirates" is definitely a faster paced action game with two distinct categories of action: on land and on the sea. The land portion is a rather typical 3rd person hack/slash jumper type fighting game featuring different land enemies with the occasional boss thrown in. The land portion involves searching for loot and navigation components in the form of treasure chests. A fairly simple puzzle type problem keeps you guessing a bit with chests hidden in difficult to access areas or buried. In the case of buried chests, an interesting use of the controller vibrator is used to indicate how close you are to the secret spot. I personally like the sea fighting portion much more. This portion features gorgous 3D graphics with lots of detail in the ships (yours and enemy), and the surrounding environment. In the water with you are schools of fish which you can see swimming just under the surface, dolphins jumping, sea gulls flying, etc. You can also make out much of the detail on enemy ships, as well as features on land. In the water, you fight against different enemy ships and land based fortresses. It's very satisfying to be able to upgrade your ship and install more cannons for truely great broadside shots! In all, I'm happy with this game. My only complaints: all enemies pretty much respawn automatically & predictably. They're not especially intelligent either. The character control in the land portion isn't perfect. Sometimes, the games "walks" the character instead of performing a "run" with the left analog stick pushed to diagonal limits.
An imaginative and fun 3rd person action/adventure game

Pirates: the Legend of Black Kat is a third person gamer's dream come true. Playing as the beautiful Katarina De Leon while unearthing all manner of treasure and combating other pirates sounds like a simple matter, but in point of fact this is quite a long and involved game which will take you to several interesting and varied locales, all with their own personalities and dangers. There is a legion of quests for you to complete, and each one seems to make the game more interesting. The ship-to-ship combat is a real treat, with a brilliant camera system and a great variety of weapons to sink that enemy galleon. The control is a snap. The graphics are probably not what you would expect from the Xbox, but still look stunning. Great music, and a gallery of concept art from the game's development. If you like adventure games, you can't go wrong here.
Not the original Pirates! but a lot of fun...

This game is fantasy meets Pirates! A fun but not technically difficult game of exploring "other world" islands. The captain mode, where you walk around, can be a bit tedious and the sword play a bit elementary. The ship mode, however, is amazing. Try battling three rouge pirate ships while getting shelled by a fortress at dusk! The graphics are lush and amazing. The camera angles need improvement, and at times make it almost impossible to accomplish a task. Also, the quests can be a bit cheezy with their fantasy orientation, i.e. finding a voodoo doll to battle a voodoo master and his skeleton gaurds. If you liked the original Pirates! and don't mind the fantasy aspect of the game- buy it!
great quest game

I'm not much of a video game player (my fave games are Tropico and the Sims), but when my fiance and I got the xbox, this was the one game in the store that looked like something I could get into. I loved that the pirate was a woman, and that there weren't 400 different fighting techniques to memorize. The quest/exploration aspect of the game is interesting and pretty challenging for a beginner, and I like the detail to the graphics in the sea battle scenes a lot. I'd rather kill giant crabs and banshees (and the occasional pirate) than draw blood and guts in some of the more realistic games. The only thing that disappointed me is that the 2 player aspect of the game is only available in a sea battle, as rival ships. Otherwise I expect to be a "weekend player" of this game for a long time to come.

I had hoped that this game would be a next gen version of Prince of Persia, but all I got was a cross between a Mario-style game and a wanna be Third-Person shooter.
The sea battles, though a cool idea, a less than spectacular -- its very difficult to manaveur the boats with speed and the action is very slow-paced.
The game itself is very simple -- you run around killing pirates and finding treasures, but its just not that fun. Perhaps kids will like this because of the cartoon style drawing and that there is not too much blood shown, but adults -- well stick with Max Payne or Gunvalkerie.
The graphics are very PS2ish and just does not seem on par with the XBOX's potential. My suggestion, rent it for your kids (if you have any) and then decide to buy it -- but if you don't have kids, stay away from this game.
How about we wait until its out....

I am very against providing reviews of a game based on speculation or hope. How about we wait until it comes out before awarding it five stars. I submit this only to balance it out. I should say that I, too, am looking forward to this game.
Not even Close to Sea Dogs

I am a huge fan of the pirate game genre, so I was excited to see this game in the XBOX section of the store. I have owned most pirate games for the PC.
If you're expecting Sea Dogs or anything close to the old Pirates game on the PC, with Pirates - The Legend of Black Kat, you will be as disappointed as I was with this game.
This game might be good for kids learning to play video games, although it is violent. Since I am not a kid, I grew bored of this game after an hour. I will probably never play it again.
The game play is extremely linear.
It would be a good game for elementary school children, if it didn't have all the violence.
Basically it's not kid enough for kids and not adult enough for adults. It's just plain bad.
If you need a crummy game fix, buy it at Amazon. They have the lowest price anywhere for this game.
This game is awesome!

This is one of my favorite recent video games. I have to admit, I'm not an avid XBox game player, but I totally loved this game. It reminds me a lot of the King's Quest and Space Quest type Sierra-brand computer games-- the really good old ones. Pirates Black Kat has great graphics, interesting game play, and totally had me hooked for several weeks. It's hard enough to be really fun but not so hard as to be impossibly frustrating. 5 Stars from me!
GREAT GAME
