Classic ........ The board is tilted so that it is hard to make out the position of the pieces. The program is slow to load (on a very fast game-oriented PC, BTW), and very slow to close. About half the time it errors-out on closing. The program does a poor job remembering its setting, so each time I have to drag it to the desired screen. Then, on top of everything else, it is a resource hog.
As far as the game goes, it is often difficult to grab the correct piece (due to the tilt of the board), and the drag function is ungainly. The pieces themselves were quite ugly and unimaginative.
This program is reminiscent of playing chess on a 386 with 4MB of memory. Frankly, the chess game on my palm pilot is a superior and much more enjoyable program. Very disappointed. If you buy it, buy it used. You'll have no desire to keep this dog.

I installed Chessmaster 9000 this morning and I'm very disappointed. The graphics are great and the program is very robust, but it keeps freezing up on me. I'm trying the tutorial area and after 15-20 screens, or when it accesses the CD (presumable for more data), The program closes and Microsoft asks for an error report.

Well I've been searching for Chess games recently and I'm surprised that this version which is being released in September 2002 is not compatible with Windows XP!
Yes look at the requirements: Windows 95 / 98 / Me
or go to UBI Soft's website and indeed they are not supporting Windows XP for most of their games including this one. They say something about Windows XP having a new file type that is not compatible with their software.
GRRRR I mean come on! I have a new tower PC and a new laptop both with Windows XP and I would love to have a nice Chess game available for it. UBI Soft get it right! Support Windows XP!
Well I've love to play this game if I could. :(
They only get a 1 star review from me until they support a Windows XP version.

Try actually reading the box, not just the platforms listed by Amazon. 9000 IS officially supported on XP, and the other versions run just fine (I have them all, I run XP). So in the future if you haven't bought it, don't review it!

to all you sceptics: no, i didnt get paid to write this. this is my personal opinion. i run a pentium 4 2.4 ghz machine (windows xp 256 mb ram 80 gb in the hard drive- bout 67 left) and so all my programs are quite fast. for me, (call me a loser if you want) chess is an obsession. the promo vs larry christiansen didnt attract me, its the other stuff that i heard about. cons: the online play sucks. ive only gotten it to work once on my old computer and even then there were only like 7 people online... the database sort of sucks too. when was this game played? doesnt tell you. where? doesnt tell you. although its very large, the layout is horrid and i can find all the games i want on chesslab.com. another major con is that its missing a few of my favorite personalities :( cm 9000 does NOT have kasparov!! but for 22 bucks american its pretty damn good. comes with about 50 gm personalities (with 150 in total. 175 after ive been messing with test personalities. you guessed it. bored on a saturday) another major con is the analysis. i own both a junior 8 (chessbase) and cm 9000 (ubi soft). and although it isnt quite accurate... ("white now uses an outflanking maneuver in order to exploit the bishops position" sigh) junior does quite a good job. cm SUCKS for "full analysis of a game" the reason i have given 5(five) stars for this review is what it CAN do. the engine itself is so bloody human. its increadible. how does they do it. cm is great for preperation and analysis because i can simply set up a position, set a time control and play a grandmaster personality (or custom) to get the idea of my theories. the classrom is okay but lord i think i know enough already. good for beginners but mehhh... the library has some great games as well. you can even create your own opening books! chessbase seems to be the largest producer (and best... i havent seen one spot on ssdf top 10 for years that isnt chessbase computer) of chess stuff, and so its hard to decide really which is better my junior or cm... the analysis that junior has is much better... then again you get about 60+ true 3d boards in cm... the engine in cm is better (not stronger) and much more human like. i am not sure which is better in the way of strength. cm seems to KNOW more. it plays moves like a human. and the personalities really do play like the real players (although a bit of time was wasted. larry evans? kashdan i have never even heard of.) and a few times i have looked up famous games involving one of the cm personalities. i play the losing side and it duplicates all the moves. not sure if this is book or not!
Conclusion: cm is the best engine for preperation because of all that you can customize. junior (when i refer to junior i am talking about all the engines... tiger shredder hiarcs fritz nimzo etc) has better analysis for clarity but if you are using mentor lines and thinking lines in cm i think it is slightly better. i have used as many as 33 personalities on a given position! the choice is yours. personally i would buy cm. if you have a good graphics card the 3d boards are amazing. also it costs like 20 dollars less in american so............ you can experiment. if you are super rich it doesnt matter. good luck with your shopping
Great but crashes often

One thing I always hated about chess programs is they had no personality. Well that's no longer true with Chessmaster 9000. It has lots of personalities, and each one has their level and playing style. It's so much more fun to play against someone at your level than a 2800+ master, so this is a great feature. The training excercises are fun too. Only problem is the program crashes often. It crashed on me 3 times in one hour today and I gave up on it. I see others say the same thing so I know it's not my computer. It's too bad because otherwise it's a great program.

I don't really know if a problem found in the operation is due to incompatibility with Windows XP (though the program says it is compatible with Windows XP) or if it was a problem of the Computer -Compaq Brand- Therefore, though the Game is really a 5 Stars Game (because I have version 7000 which works good) I have not been able to work with the Chessmaster 9000. I have not made any complaint, simply because I have not been able to place the fault on any one. Of course not you Amazon.com. In the remote possibility that you could do something, I would be very obliged, to you or whomever. Farewell,
One install is all that is required

I don't understand what one of the reviewers is talking about as far as having to load the CD everytime you play. I installed Chessmaster 9000 and on subsequent games have not had to use the CD. This was true with previous versions but not with 9000. I have also not had problems with system crashes. I think for the money this is one heck of a product.
Be warned - do not buy unless

Another buyer recently wrote in of problems with Chessmaster 9000 on his/her computer. I ordered it from Amazon but have not yet opened it, and intend to return it to get a refund.
I called UBI Software (the maker) and was told that the CDRW I have on my 8 month old Dell 2400 Desktop would not run Chessmaster. You have to call UBI to find out. It might not even be due to the W part of RW. They claim that the problem is more general than Chessmaster, but the Dell people plead ignorance, and say their installed hardware is good. So, I might have general "game software" problems in the future, but I won't have it now with Chessmaster 9000. "Thanks" other guy.
