Good purchase

I am happy with this purchase. I am an amatuer player. I was looking for a replacement for the playstation game I was using. This one made sense for the price; it actually exceded my expectations. It taught me basic principals of the game that I was ignorant of. A couple of the features I like are 1) the "historical games" feature which plays out games from hundreds of years ago to modern matches and 2) the "tutor mode" which recommends moves during a game.

Good for amatuers and to pass time. I probably will never be able to speak for advanced players.

For the price, AMAZING!

Chessmaster 9000 is no longer the "latest and greatest" version of CM. Therefore, the price is reduced to an amazing value (currently $10). The mentoring tools are excellent (quick hints, blunder alerts, analysis of games to point out where you made a mistake or missed a mate). The lessons by Josh Waitzkin are very interesting and the audio is excellent. I like the daily problem before you log-in. The ability to save games is really nice. The various "virtual players" is great to change the competition level to your mood (dominate, equal matched, or be dominated). There is also good and accurate descriptions of their styles (e.g., "exchanges queens").

A few downsides. The "True 3D" constantly crashes my fairly new high-end PC. So I've learned not to use it. There are plenty of attractive 2-D versions that are enjoyable to play.

The database of 800 games is good. A little hard to manuver. The viewable screen is a little too small. I would have likes more notes and commentary from a GM on the games.

After buying this a few months ago I play an average of a game or two a day. If my game continues to improve in the next year or so, I might consider purchasing Fritz, but for now, I'm very thrilled. I have yet to be bored of it. If you are a casual player, and don't want to waste a lot of money, this is an EXCELLENT product to have fun and to improve your game.

Best in the Series!

Wow! There are so many features, tutorials, help, classes, games etc... The skill levels vary widely so that anyone can use this tool to get better. I am very impressed with how detailed and helpful the tutorials are. There are literally hundreds of hours of play time here!

The only con is that when I first installed the game there were several bugs, including one that only let me play the Chessmaster no matter who I wanted to play. As soon as you get the game installed, be sure to update to the newest patch.

The official site says the next version will support XP

I found this on the Chessmaster site

"The next version of Chessmaster (due to be released around the beginning of September, 2002) will support Windows XP/ME/98/95. There are no plans to make the next version of Chessmaster support Windows 2000/NT."

Almost a great game

I am really dissapointed by the fact that I could not play this game in True 3d and not able to rotate the board. I meet all the requirments specified they really slopped up on that one. Its only a chess board why could they not make it a simple matter to be able to rotate the gameboard?! They could also add some cool option to enable game piece animations, like on battlechess, where the pieces battle each other each time you capture a piece. I am giving it 4 stars instead of 3 because of the fact that you can play it online unlike jepardy 2003 or wheel of fortune which they should have made internet capable :( I would have gave it 5 stars had they made a simple board rotation. Other than that It has great tutorial to learn or become a better game player and game piece options that allow you to change the pieces and board to your liking. One other problem it has is the inability to fit your window screens in and be able to see the game board at the same time... unless you squash it into the corner and make the pieces 2d small. Needs some work.

Careful !!!

The game overall seems fare. But as somebody else commented before;
First of all; you got to have the CD available within the CD drive every time you want to run the software, which is going to make it to much of a hassle and it will also bother you a lot.

I clearly understand they want to protect their investment against piracy, but come on!!!, this is a way to far to reach this goal.
Since this CD has a lot of anti piracy protection it will make your life miserable. If you are willing to pay the price, buy the CD.

Here is clear example of why they are exaggerated their protection;
In the market; you can buy CD software's for over a $4000.00 dlls. Thrust me, they do not have this kind of anti piracy protection on their product.
Now compare; the price of this game software is around $19.99 dlls.

$4000.00 >>>>> $19.99

Don't you think; this company is exaggerating the way they protect this software?
They must pay attention to their customers if they do not want to go out of business.

I fully recommend you to look and review for another chess software options available, prior to buy this game.

I have two computers a lap top and a desk top. I used the software for a while then I was told I have to have the disk in to continue to use disk number one. This is very inconvenient. If I had known this I would not have bought the product. Also sometimes it is difficult to make a move.

I am a total novice at chess at the age of 60. I am having so much fun learning this game that had always intimidated me. To top it off I even win on occasion.
Chessmaster 9000 helps build your skill levels and provides a variety of opponents - all in an attractive interface. Because Chessmaster 10 is now out the prices on this version are so reasonable it would be foolish to pass it up

Enjoyable, but I'm disappointed

I've used many version of Chessmaster since version 3000, but CM 9000 is the first that's really frustrated me. Not because of the strength of play, but because of bugs that Ubi Soft seems to have no desire or ability to fix. At times, the computer tells me my game clock has run out, even though I have plenty of time left. When I look at the clock, it shows some ludicrous time, such as -43:00. At other times, the pregenerated opponents will simply stop thinking. You can sit until their time runs out, and they will not make a move. Neither problem happens all the time, but enough to be irritating.

I may eventually give CM 10th a try, but, for now, I've switched to Fritz 9.
