Good Chess...But Very Buggy !

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 2 / 4

I received v1.0 of the program even though I ordered it in Jan. 2004. After many crashes and other wierd happenings I began looking for a patch. Installing the 1.02 patch from ubi web site was a must, It fixed some major problems but not all. The program is loaded with good stuff so I have learned to live with the bugs I enjoy the classroom sessions very much and play chess against one of the programs many personalities on a daily basis. As good as this program is I am very surprised it is not more stable.

This is a complete joke

This game would not install. I learn't afterwards on the web that it has been deliberately designed not to install from a cdrw drive in the name of copy protection, which rules out just about every laptop on the planet by now. There is no warning on amazon or on the box. A hard to find item on the ubisoft faq suggests you should go and buy a different cdrom drive. What a disgraceful way to behave towards your customers and what a narrow minded way to produce software in today's marketplace. Having wasted my money I am furious and shall now be buying fritz. I will not be buying ubi soft software in the future. I suggest the title on the box should be amended to read.

"The world's most popular chess program for people who do not have CDRW drives"

Excellent software for learning chess and improving your skills. There are scores of simulated opponents ranging in skill from children to grandmasters. It feels like you're sitting down and playing a game with another person. This is a very good program. I've been playing it every night. Hey, there's a reason this series has been around so long.

Good Tutor, Lousy Online Play

I am a chess beginner. I have been playing around with Chessmaster 9000 for a little over a month now. I have found it to be a very good tutor. I am still in the beginner part. There are sections for intermediate and advanced. There are a lot of features I doubt I will ever advance to - like a library of famous games. The one feature that I would like to use is the online game playing. The online portion of this program is lousy. It is very confusing to use. You have install separate ubi.com software - that's ok, but then how the two programs work together is not that clear. I have gotten into a room, but have been able to actually play a game online. I will hate to have to pay more money to Yahoo or some other service to play online.

Intresting, quite intresting

It tells you when you are blundering, but blunders every so ofen by itself. Even on the GM level. Im not that good, but it tries blundering for a mate that is easily preventable.

Maybe I am that good, or (since it only has happened twice in 23 games...) im just experiencing it testing me out.

Very good, told me how to improve my chess opening and closing.

See Ya'll

Pretty Good For Chess

I am really into chess, and the Chessmaster 9000 software is pretty good for a chess tutorial. My favorite features are the Josh Waitzken's audio tutorial with his recorded help. The features such as Blunder Alert and the game library with historical chess games are also helpful. Although Chessmaster 9000 is probably the best chess software, it gets old facing a computer player. The tutorial is helpful, but the best practice is to play against actual players, thus I would not reccomend this software. Play on the Internet on various sites instead, for free. Playing games is experience and the best way to improve chess skills.

I bought this to improve my chessplaying. But in a couple of days I removed it from my PC. I find the chessboards included akward to look at. I recommend to chessplayers to try chessclub.com instead.

I've been reading all your reviews, yet not one mentions playing an opponent on-line with CM9000. Does this software support playing other CM9000 players on-line??

Just to let everyone know do not believe the reviews that say it doesn't work on Win2k i installed it and have been playing it just fine on my Win2k. Chessmaster9000 provides a stronger engine and has a database with basically 500,000 games! The toutorials are absolutely fantasic. My rating when i was 9 was 1350 USCF after a year of training with Chessmaster9000 I went from 1350 USCF to 1800 USCF although I would like to thank Fritz 8 and the authors of many books I have purchased as well. I hope my rating will improve with Chessmaster 10k and Fritz 9.
