Chess on steroids, but can't keep track of mission progress

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 0

The POSITIVES: I bought this used, and after 1 day of play i was convinced I'd be returning it (if you buy a game used at any GameStop/EBGames, you can return within a week for any reason). I tried it again on Day 2 and never looked back. There is a bit of a learning curve, and once it clicks you realize it is a GREAT strategy game. If you are a chess enthusiast, this game satisfies those cravings. You use your pieces of various moves and strengths to set up traps, to attack, to defend, to move forward, and to control the field of play. Yes, as most reviewers have pointed out, the AI isn't very good. I am the worst at these types of games, and I've completed the first 7 missions without losing and having to repeat. I don't know what that other reviewer was talking about when he/she said they had to do each level 3-4 times - they must not have completed the tutorial. I don't mind the poor AI, it gives me a chance to figure the game out without getting frustrated. I'm getting better with every mission. I've read a lot about how this game "borrows" heavily from Advance Wars. I've never played it, but who cares? If it's a great game, why does where it borrows from matter? This is a psitive. Look at what other games do successfully, repeat and try to improve upon it.

The NEGATIVES: BUT the reason i didn't give this game 5 stars: I just don't understand why it tells you your stats at the end of each mission during the campaign, but then there is no way to go back and see how you did on those mission, so you can replay them and try to do better on them (a la Warhammer Squad Command). Also there is no way to view how many missions you've completed succesfully, and how many more you have to go during the campaign. So when i say I've completed 7 missions, i don't really know, it might be 6, it might be 8. No idea. When I go to quick battle, it gives me mission names and mission numbers but they don't match the missions on the campaign. For example, if i wanted to replay mission 1 from the campaign, I have no way of finding it on the quick battle menu, because it isn't listed as Mission 1. The only way to find it is if you know the mission name. Well, i can't go back to the campaign to find what the mission name is for missions i've already completed. So i went to the forums and boards hoping to sort this stuff out, and it turns out, Mission 1 from campaign is mission 27 (or 28) from the quick battle menu. And mission 2 is actually mission 29 from the quick battle. Absolutely ludicrous. How do they leave this out? FC's biggest blunder. IF an FC 2 comes out, keep the missions between campaign and quick battle CONSISTENT so i know where to go to redo some levels. Also, keep track of stats to provide the incentive to want to do better and to gauge whether one does better on levels they replay. Isn't replayability important to a succesful game? And let me knoiw where i am during the campaign, how many i've completed, and how many more to go! This game should have thought have taken care of these minor details. Not hard to do.

this is a really fun game that had little advertising and it turns out is a real blast to play both online and alone although as others have said enemy A.I. can be downright ignorant at times
this seems to not only add to its charm but seems to BE the learning curve because later on they seem to make Fewer blunders.
the graphics are very good and remind me of dune 2000 for the pc and ps1 although this has better graphics the command & conquer style/dune gameplay is here without the base building element Just Fighting which is what makes this title a blast. you can spend all day playing or just 30 minutes. truly a take anywhere game.
about the best turn based strategy game out there besides Warhammer 40, squad command for the PSP.

Graphics: not breathtaking but definately good 4 stars

Sound: explosions, gunfire and the like but done very well 4 stars.

Gameplay: 5 stars! this game is a real blast and with an absolute TON of vehicles to choose from play alone or with friends via ad-hoc or infrastructure mode.

overall: thankfully we are starting to see more turn based strategy games now and this is a good one for both beginners and veterans of rts games and tbs games.

WARNING!! TURN BASED GAME = BORING!!

You could play this game with some five sided dice and a game board, I have no idea why anyone would make this into a "video" game. Flat out, this is a dumb game. Why? There it no action that you control! All you do is move a few board game style ships/tanks/aircraft around and then the machine takes over and shows you the result of your moves. Did I mention that YOU DO NOT CONTROL ANY OF THE ACTION! About as high tech as the original Dragon's Lair. O.k. that is not true, Dragon's Lair was a much better game.

enjoyable, interesting strategy game with editor

A strategy game that does not involve cards!
Most of the reviews I have seen for Field Commander leave out that the game comes with an editor allowing you to create your own scenarios and play them, as well as download them from the internet. Also, while the game can be easy at times, it still offers enough of a challenge to make it interesting to play. A couple of the missions in the initial campaign story are very difficult. Graphics are superb, sound and music is great, diversity of weaponry is excellent, without making any one weapon too strong, often an achilles heel for this type of game. This game is the only choice currently on the PSP if you are into axis and allies inspired turn based strategy, and a great deal especially, at the price I bought it at, around 15 dollars. Hoping Warhammer's planned strategy game is even 3/4 as good as this one. Please note, because it is a war based game this game depicts some graphic violence, and may not be suitable for very young players. I give this game 5 stars, even though some battles against the computer are easily won, it is worth playing.

Now this is what I call a strategy game! It got the 2006 best Strategic award for a reason. Highly involved, great graphics, good story.

This is an excellently crafted game in the venue of turn based strategies. It spans many cmapaigns with loads of features and unique units. once you get into using stealth units, it will really begin to tax your ability to win with losing few forces. The graphics are decent and have a good contrast to them. The units themselves are fairly distinct and the on screen display really helps with your strategy so that you are never caught of guard. I really enjoy this game still, even with my friends who I can play with via email movements.

This game is truly great. It is a great strategy game, much like the game of chess but at a larger scale. I own this game and cant stop playing it. But the only problem is the length of this game. You could spend hours playing one mission. Basicly in the game you are a commander of an army and lead your army to victory over foes. While fighting, you have to think about where to move. If you move a smaller unit in front of a larger unit good chances are you are dead.
Overall this game is pretty good but it could use some improvement with teaching fundementals of the game. So if you are looking to buy a new game for your psp and are a big strategy lover this game is the game for you.

Field Commander is a game which has plenty of options and a great graphical display unlike other turn based games.

Field Commander is the best turn based strategy game on the PSP, if not the only one, and it stands as a great game to have in general. This game is very similar to Age of Empires and Advance Wars, so if you have played the two, you should pick up on this easily. The rules are complex, but once you master them all, you are in for an addictive rewarding expericence. You play as a Commander who is able to command infantry, air vehicles, sea vehicles, and land vehicles to attack the opponent's army. You can build forces and destroy them. Each character has powers they can use to help themselves during the game. And theres plenty of tricks and twists in the game like Napalm and Fog of War. You can capture cities too.

The graphics are great and the sound is good. The gameplay is overall addicting. You are able to create and receive maps. You can not only play online, but receive maps online. The only problems would be the long loading times, the repetetive sounds, and the inability to create maps from scratch. Other than that, the story is long and it's well explained.

Overall, turn based strategy fans and war fans will like this. And it's good to try something new if you aren't familiar with this.

Pros: Great presentation ; Addictive Gameplay ; Plenty of Gameplay Modes.

Cons: Long loading times ; Repetetive voice overs ; Can't build maps from scratch.

Weak AI hurts an otherwise good game

Despite the weak AI, there were a lot of things that I liked about Field Commander.

Aesthetically, it's a very pleasing game. The graphics are good, focusing on more realism instead of more cartoony looking models. The characters and voice acting, although sometimes over-dramatic, are entertaining and add to the overall story and the music and sound effects are also great adding to the over all experience.

Gameplay is also great (although this does lead to a gripe, which I'll elaborate on when I get to the "cons.") The control system is straightforward and easy to learn which gets the player out of the tutorial and into the game as soon as possible. The story line is fun too, but not particularly original with no real surprises or other twists.

That being said, there were also some things that I found pretty displeasing...

The first one is the AI. I think the programmers guessed wrong on who their target audience would be and created an AI that small children could find challenging but ultimately end up defeating. For anyone else over the age of 10, the game is, with the exception of 1 or 2 levels, a cakewalk. I remember one board in particular where the enemy units literally walked back and forth in small area for the entire fight and never engaged until my forces were able to walk right up on them. It doesn't take much to be a successful field commander when the enemy essentially surrenders. Disappointing.

The other gripe I have is that it looks like the programmers borrowed HEAVILY from the Advance Wars series from Nintendo. Troop types, abilities, gameplay, mechanics and much more looks so similar that unless Sony bought the rights from Nintendo, they deserve to get sued for copyright infringement.

Overall, I enjoyed playing Field Commander, but hind sight being 20/20, I would have rather rented this game for a weekend instead of buying it.
